To Duane Trupiano,

Nice to meet another veterinarian on the list! I guess you have already
seen that Steve and Amy White are veterinarians. My wife Barbara and I
are as well.

What type of practice do you do?

Thanks also for your input on evaluations. It's helpful to know that the
traveling evaluator system can work.

gestation length in Fjords

1998-05-08 Thread BRIAN C JACOBSEN
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (BRIAN C JACOBSEN)

I have often wondered what the average gestation length is in Fjords.
Even though we have raised many foals over the years, I have never
calculated an average. Mainly the reasons I haven't are that fewer than
20% of mares foal on their due date anyhow (this is data from all
breeds), and watching the mare's physical changes is more reliable than
just going by a due date. Still, it would be a little helpful to know.
Would you all consider participating in a straw poll?

Using the last breeding date as the starting point for the calculation,
how long was your mare's gestation length?

Was it her first foal?

Which state (or province or country) did she foal in?

(If you want to provide data for more than one foal, please list them
separately.)

If we get enough responses to make a representative sample, I'll tabulate
them and post what we find out.

The foal (actually weanling) died of a ruptured bowel at 6 months
old,OnChristmas!
The bowel ruptured at a site of one of many lesions caused by Actinobacillus
equuili. I don't know how the bacteria took over so greatly, since it is a
comon bacteria that lives everywhere. The vet said she was healthy looking
otherwise.

hi. This has nothing to do with Fjords, but you guys are a large
population of people with computers, so I figure someone will know. How
do you link your adress to your web page? I've tried mail_me at and
mail to but neither works. I am using Netscape composer to write it.
send any answers directly to me, please.
Thanks.

Alison, I'll post it for everybody to see. To put in an email link
type mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] now, if you type it like
that I'll get a lot of mail. Try mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] make
sure you avoid punctuation at the end like a period if it is at the end
of a sentence. To insert a link to your page in text, type http://
before the url. like this- http://miltoncarriageworks.com On most mail
or browsers, this will appear as a link.
This is good information for all and I could not resist the temptation
for the shameless plug.

It sounds like you just had a bit of bad luck. I had a mare that died of
that same cause. It may be from migrating parasites or possibly
suppressed immunity from stress or illness. Either way, no need to be
discouraged. It probably will never happen again.

After my lengthy thoughts on evaluations, I have some fun thoughts.. I
have
2 geldings that I can take pictures of for the cyber-eval, but I'm not
good
at computers, and would need detailed step by step how to do its...
Mike, was it you who was in the Coast Guard? My brother was in Nome at
the
Loran station probably in 1969-70, I'd have to ask him.

Susanne Gronqvist... My mother's parents both immigrated from Sweden.
Except for a cousin of hers, all her relatives live there still, around
Stockholm and Gavle. I've been over there once as a teenager.

Nancy L. , I have a gelding named Luster that was your breeding mare
was
Frida and sire ws Hei. He was born in 87 and sold to Dr. Larry Eckman.
I
think Bernie Karns talked to you before we bought horses from Texas
Oct.
1996. He's a nice boy..pretty calm and steady and ridden by my 11 yr.
old
son.
he matured to about 14.2

Jean..thanks for the info on the glory bits. I think I'll give one a
try.
Pictures still int he works..be patient.
Night all

Question for our European writers: How have the Fjords done in
dressage in
Europe? Have there been some that have really excelled?

Hi Dave !!
I´m riding a fjord called Sindarve Lukas ( Teddy ).
I´ve competed him in dressage in just small clubcompetitions,
and the highest place we´ve had is second !!
But, that´s just in the easiest programs.
