The family I got Fj from had 18 Fjords, and 2 were semi-regularly
worked, 4 more trained well, and 4 or 5 totally untrained. They simply
kept them as pets, for which they did very well. That's how I ended up
with a 7-year old barely halter-broken Fjord (oh, well. He is a
fantastic pony and I would'nt trade him for any 3 year old in the world).

Icelandic Ponies

I saw the Icelandic Ponies the first (and only) time last year at
Equitana. They are interesting, but I think Susan Cook, who was with the
NFHR group, summed it up best. She said something like: the Icelandics
are 'one trick ponies' and they do that trick very well, whereas our
Fjords can really do every and any thing well. Also mentioned by
someone was that the Icelandic ponies were less people-oriented than the
Fjords, and I like having my Fjords as pet-ponies.
The one thing that bothered me, being a pretty chicken and careful
horseperson, is the lack of stability I saw. We saw one pony carrying a
large adult man, lose its balance turning and go head over heels in the
Mane Event Exhibition. We also saw one pony being tried for sale out in
the barns also fall down. It looked like they are fine if the large load
they are carrying at the fast speeds is going straight ahead, but in
turning for the arenas and around the stables, they have a narrower
frame than the Fjords and seem less stable side to side. Just my
observations. They are neat ponies and I am glad they have their
supporters, as we have our Fjords.

Any suggestions on trimming/shoeing my white dun that has soft hooves that
tend to crack and not hold nails well. He also trips alot, tho is getting
better on that with lessons intended to lighten his front end carraige. We
have been putting sideclips on his shoes.

I don't know what to do about the nails, but when my old gelding
startedtriping alot (mostly from his feet sagging from age) our farrier rounded
the front of his feet, and it really helped.

Hi Steve and Pamela,

And what manes those Icelandics have! In fact they looked just like my
Janosch (the Shetland) but than more lanky!

Fjords with untrimmed manes look just like Icelandics. See the Ingmar
Bergman film JungfrukÀllan / The Virgin Spring for an example.

I would like to see that film, even though Pamela scared me and gave me the
impression that it will be a movie like Jude, beautiful but so depressing!!!

As for a Fjord with untrimmed manes, I just have to look in my backyard! now
you mentioned it, it's true that they give him an Icelandic air...

As to those manes, it's so strange: sometimes Sybren looks so handsome with his
wild manes, especially when he trots or canters with his head high, but
sometimes they look so flat that I want to take the scissors and give him a
coupe Fjord... Only my own clumsiness holds me back then...

Saskia

(who just discovered an excellent vet!!! and is as happy as a lark!!! and his
wife is a vet too, so I'm even more happy now!!!)

Saskia,
Please be assured that no apologies were expected. You do extremely
well with English. I guess I must be dull myself, since my wife
immediately guessed that the subject referred to someone being with
another breed of horse.

I found this interesting site yesterday. It lists names for babies for
you. If you pick the ethnic orgin of Scandinavian, it will list only
Scandinavian names. You can pick the letter with which the name begins or
ends if you want and of course the gender.

Try it out. The URL is:
