selenium
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (BRIAN C JACOBSEN) Mike, Here in North Carolina our soil has sufficient Selenium. Also in Colorado where we have lived the Selenium level was adequate. So yes, there are some areas with normal amounts. In fact, there are areas with high levels of it. Also, a slight caution to people about supplementing Selenium. Be careful to find out that you really need to supplement before you do it. Selenium is toxic to animals in too high levels. Ask your veterinarian or your extension agent if the soil in your area is Selenium deficient. One way to find out for sure if your horse is low in Selenium is to send a hair sample for analysis; Contact your vet for more info. This message is from: Pedfjords [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear Fjord Digest Subscribers, Hello from So. California! Its warm and sunny here and it looks like its shaping up to be a beautiful holiday weekend! We are going to get the fjords out tomorrow and go carraige driving with the filly at her moms side, and hope to have an uneventful drive. I am enjoying the fjord reading that I get to do with all the comments from fellow fjord owners. I have one comment to make regarding Mike's article, by Robert Kirby. 1. Fish, are very good listeners, even better than relatives, and are much less prone to disagree with you on most points. ( And yes, fish DO have ears... I owned one, an Oscar, who would swim up and roll over to get his belly rubbed.) 2. Cats are NOT all demonic, just some who seem to be reincarnated from serial killers. 3. As far as Pigs not talking. Didnt you see Babe? Enough said on that one. ( Even my pet pig, Haagen Dazs communicates mostly by grunting, and running through her trick list, hoping for a belly rub,or a treat. Not to be confused with my husband who also demonstrates these behavoirs.) 4. I would have to agree with you one this point. ( Chickens are potatoes with beaks) As much as I like to watch the springtime antics of my hens and roosters with all their babies, I also think that chickens have brains as big as a grain of sand. I keep telling them not to fly and land in the dog kennel, and they continue to do so, making for good population control. We like to say that chickens are rats with wings. I do have to give the rats one point on that one... THEY seem to understand dogs! Well, lastly, I would like to extend an invitation to fjord chat on PETSANDVETS, on the net. Go to their site, scroll up to chat, and look for horse chat and there you go! See you then, Lisa P. ( PEDFJORDS) ( PAV FJORDS) Sun. night 9:00 Eastern 6:00 Calif. time!

Well, no! Tom, my non-horsey husband, objects! (as if he won the quiz!!!) and says I should use the money for food, vets etc.!!! But, no panic! I already have a super-plan... In a short time it's Toms 27 and halfth birthday and I'll give him Flor (or rather half of Flor...) as a present. Or not? Good luck!I hope you succeed, I know that Fj could not stand to be in a stall all day, as he strongly objects to more than an hour in one. another subject, how does everyone keep their Fjords occupied? Fj undoes gates (including one spring loaded one that I have to wiggle and lean my weight on to get open), unties himself, and jumps fences. We already discussed Fencing, but how does everyone relieve their boredom? Allot of my problems would be solved if I could relieve the boredom that makes him do all these things. I have found with Kilar, my Fjord and his side-kick Wee Willy, that as long as they have each other, I don't need to worry about boredom. They make up some pretty strange games. However, when I need to take one or the other out of the pasture for any length of time, the remaining pony usually runs out his frustration for a little while then plays soccer with a pasture ball we originally got for Wee Willy when he was weaning. Like your Fjord, my ponies untie themselves, open gates and generally get into trouble when they are bored. Everything that gets fastened gets fastened twice (gate latch plus rope tied around the fence, for instance). Martie Bolinski
Flor
This message is from: Jon A. Ofjord [EMAIL PROTECTED] Saskia, The name Flor in Norwegian can mean a couple of things. Bloom or flowering is probably the most common meaning, but it can also mean cow barn or barn floor. Just don't tell Flor about that one. Maybe Flor is like Ferdinand the bull who would rather be in the pasture smelling flowers than in the ring fighting.
conformation
This message is from: Alison Barr [EMAIL PROTECTED] a quick question, do most Fjords have flat necks? All conformation info I have received says they should have arched necks, but the pics I find don't. if this is a fault, how bad a fault?

I think what most people see when they say the Fjord has a Crested neck is the cut of the mane in the arch. I don't see a lot of horses with a really big crest. Mostly the mane trimmed to give that appearance. === Norwegian Fjord Horse Registry http://www.nfhr.com Mike May, Registrar mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Webster, NY, USA (Suburb of Rochester) Voice 716-872-4114 FAX 716-787-0497 ===

I do plan on seeing it. I have heard it is pretty good. BTW, Mike, I have sent you some tourist Info about Interior Alaska, Fairbanks, and Alaska in general. You'll see it's a lot different than the Nome area! Thanks. My Fjords are almost slick but Old Bjarne (23) still has a real fuzzy belly. Jean ini Fairbanks, Alaska, 75 degrees today, 19:29 hours daylight! Well that makes it a lot different than Nome already. We never got higher than 55 up there. We laid out on the beach for a sun tan that day! === Norwegian Fjord Horse Registry http://www.nfhr.com Mike May, Registrar mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Webster, NY, USA (Suburb of Rochester) Voice 716-872-4114 FAX 716-787-0497 ===

You could answer general questions about fjords and registeration issues, and should be an informitive time! ( Hopefully fun too...) So, let me know, I would like to have some time to advertise and promote the date you pick. Thanks, Lisa Pedersen PEDFJORDS/PAV FJORDS I can't make it this Sunday I am afraid. As it is a long weekend here we are going to my in-laws cottage. Niki is graduating today from RIT and she will be leaving on a trip to Colorado tomorrow for a week in the Rockies. Possibly the next Sunday but I can't make any promises just yet. I would like to do it though.
