Take Care Susan Richard
This message is from: Betsy Bauer [EMAIL PROTECTED] Good luck Susan and Richard. By now the surgery may be over and the work begins. My father had this surgery twice. The first time (6) his heart had made other veins also. A way that our bodies work at doing the right thing. The trick to healing is walking - no matter how uncomfortable. So Sue make a walking chart and each day go further. Even if you have to go to the mall to get in enough laps. Then, my dad lasted an amazing 16 yrs after the first surgery - changed his eatting habits, and bred many more wonderful fjords. Won't mention tipping over his backhoe while helping the workmen dig the lake at Hestdalen. And still he kept going - just like the energizer bunny. Hang in there Richard! This message is from: ceacy [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello everyone, A quick update on Richard Giargiari. He had surgery on Friday, everything went exceptionally well. He is in lots of pain as is expected but is getting stronger each day. Sue G. is her indomitable self, holding down the farm, being mom, and being at the hospital too. Richard's worst day will be tomorrow when he and Sue meet with the doctor and discuss what they termed his new life. Uh Oh ,Richard might just have to go to bed after one of those all night truck rides instead of staying up all night entertaining folks with his colorful lifestory. I think he's pretty entertaining most of the time. And Sue G., she's a downright hoot!! So goodnight all, and sweet dreams to Richard, Susan, and Anthony.

the little story...
This message is from: Ingrid Ivic [EMAIL PROTECTED] A little story. Nothing spectacular or exciting. Nothing happened! And I guess that's exactly why I was so struck by the wonder of it all. To be able to take two mares out of a pasture that hadn't been asked to do anything for years, and put two beginners on them for a riding lesson - Well, it's not exciting, but it sure is SPECTACTULAR in my opinion. Best Regards, Carol Rivoire Hi Carol, Have to admit, we pretty much did the same thing here two weeks ago...my hubbby's boss stopped by with his three little girls, 4yr old twins and their 7yr old sister. Of course they were Ooohing and Aaahing over the horses, begging for pony rides. The cleanest horse of the bunch happend to be our little Mira, one of the mares who hadn't been ridden for about a year and a half. I hesitated at first, but the boss was getting impatient (he's used to getting his way immediately you know), and we can't leave him waiting now, can we? To make this story short...cleaned Mira up, plopped a western saddle on her (complete with kiddy stirrups), outfitted the girls with helmets and off we went. No arguments, no hassles...just a good time for everyone concerned. The girls were smiling from ear to ear, hubby's job was saved (ah-hem), and Mira was a star. Love those fjordies! Re: Small WOnders
This message is from: Cheryl Beillard [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi All . .. I just read Carol's story and I thought I'd tell you of one of my little successes that happened yesterday too. As some of you may recall, I went to a Parelli clinic in Oct. and came home all enthused but found, to my dismay, that my stolid Soleia (fiery when she wants to be) would just stand there calmly and look at me (or away, as the case might be) when I tried to get her attention and the reaction you see from most other horses to flailing ropes, arms, being threatened with a stick. Nothing. Nada. It was so discouraging .. and no response to even a fair bit of pressure (read leaning on her!). Soleia drives beautifully, responding to voice, but does not move readily away from a light touch on her flank .. or anywhere else. SO .. I asked the guy who sponsored the clinic to come out and try to get a reaction .. I know that some of you are having tremendous success with the 7 games, etc. And of course, I'm have only observed the clinic and you forget all sorts of things, once you get home. Well, we worked with her for two hours on Wednesday. Within about half an hour she was nimbly stepping aside, moving haunches, even angling down the fence, doing crossovers. With very big eyes, wide open! Not scared, but definitely taken aback at the turn things had taken. So .. to get to yesterday. Out I went, now emboldened by the success of the pro .. and having seen that it probably took just that little bit more aggression to create the respect and willingness to work. And lo and behold, we're not perfect, but she's paying attention. And the most amazing thing -- for me -- was, not only did I manage to get her to move diagonally down the fenceline, and trot circles around me with no contact and stop at a little shake on the rope, but also .. when I touch the poll of her head, now she lowers it immediately .. and if I want, she'll put her nose on the ground, and this is to the 4 ounces of pressure they advertise as all that is needed. I was thrilled. And most important, when I went out with the halter for a second round, later in the day, she came up to me immediately and nosed around the halter, not unhappy about the prospect more play .. So we've made a start and isn't it fun!
Re: Talk About Dependability . . .
This message is from: Glen L Porter [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Carol: It has and always will amaze me how our horses take care of the riders and drivers. They aim only to please and love what they are doing. They are so sensitive to people and if only we could find a way to instill this sensitivity in people. Did you raise Holly and Maryke. Another nice day down here. Barn cleaning yesterday without our jackets. Forecast calls for snow and rain showers today. Hope it holds off for another day. Is there additional information that you need in ref. to the Fjord mare coming down. Are the people still interested. Did you get my e-mail with our FAX No. and telephone numbers. Would love to hear more about the mare. E-mail when you can. This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Arthur Rivoire) Hi Everyone from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia - I thought I'd relate a little incident that happened here today. It really is a little incident - not exciting - nothing spectacular - Our horses didn't win a competition. Didn't do much of anything. It's really just an ordinary Fjord story that I'm sure happens all the time with many of your horses. Anyway, here it is. Last summer, we decided not to breed back our two wonderful broodmares, HOLLY and MARYKE. Holly is the dam of BDF JOHN ARTHUR, BDF MAGNUM, BDF JOELSTRA, and so many other wonderful performing Fjords. Maryke is the dam of BDF MISS NAVETA, BDF IDAR, and many other sons and daughters that are doing so very well in fairly big-time competition. -- Holly foaled a very nice colt this year that may well be Gjest's replacement sometime in the future, and Maryke had foaled another extremely sweet and good looking colt. Both mares have produced faithfully for us year after year, and this year, we decided to give them a rest. - We need just that kind of horse for our Nova Scotia Beginner Driving Program --- really quiet, dependable, well trained driving and riding horses for guests who are often beginners. Holly and Maryke fit that description to a T. We'd weaned the foals two weeks ago, and today (Saturday) was the day we have our Apprentice Program with a group of youngsters aged 11 - 13. They come and help us out in exchange for lessons in Horsemanship and Riding. Today, two of the kids were due for a riding lesson. Normally, we use the old standbys, BDF Toril (16 yr. old mare) and Andor (8 yr. old gelding). However, today, I said to Jaimie (our Stable Mgr.) - Let's use Holly and Maryke. We brought them in from the pasture, the kids cleaned them up, and out we went to the ring. Both girls have only recently graduated from the lunge line, so were riding the mares on their own. Jaimie was teaching one girl, and I taught the other. Everything was going well. And then it suddenly dawned on me that - EVERYTHING WAS GOING REALLY WELL! It dawned on me how extraordinary the situation was. These two children who are almost absolute beginners were taking a lesson on two mares that hadn't been worked in any way whatsoever for almost two years. . . . and EVERYTHING WAS GOING WELL!!! Granted, it was just a walk lesson, but even so, those wonderful mares did everything asked of them. The littlest girl one horse length behind the other, they were able to halt and stand when directed, change rein on the diagonal, down the centerline, across the ring, turn right, turn left - One girl with no contact, and one with too much. Holly and Maryke just kept trucking. As I said - A little story.
