Re:olympic cruelty ?
This message is from: Karen McCarthy [EMAIL PROTECTED] ... I adore watching dressage and also team penning and cutting. I want to see the reining competition.. Just had to jump into the fray...having evented up to Prelim level ages ago, and knowing what amount of training these horses and riders go though, to malign the whole sport because of overwrought reporting of a few unfortuinate accidents is really unfair.I really think the sport of eventing has been tightened up in the past 10 years. Yes, there are a few bad actors in every equestrian sport, at every level, and always will be. Keeping your nose clean and not placing unrealistic demands on you and your horse is half the equation in training for any competitive sport, along with a quality horse and good skills. Need to mention that TB racing on the whole is really pretty unsavory - in college I worked a couple of summers on the Calif Fair circuit, and geez! that was a real eye opening experience, to say the least. I worked for one trainer who was as rotten as they come (quit at day 3), then I was very lucky to work for a hispanic trainer who limited his barn to 6 horses only, and really spent quality time not just conditioning these young horses, (he specialised in maiden horses), but training them, basiclly giving them a whole education, not just a quick trip to the gate. His horses were a joy to work with, good ground manners, he recognised their indiviuality, etc. Don't forget that there is a reason that there is a huge market for all the joint and soft tissue related products...take the very popular sport of reining and working cowhorse events. How many aged events do you see that are highly promoted? Not many horses left to enter these events! Used to be a horse was in his prime as a using ranch horse, say from age 7+ Nowadays a horse of this age is a rarity - as they just don't last that long, due to starting them as 2 year olds in order to make the futurities, which is so ironiclly named, as what kind of a future is it, as a 4 year old horse with blown hocks??? I am not saying that if a horse is carefully brought along it will always be 100% sound. No, there will always be physical side effects, but not on such a huge scale as is seen in todays competitive world. As I see it, the crime being comitted here folks, is that these horses are being asked to do high level tasks, in a minimum of time, due primarily to our crowded lives, and our desire to have it all, right NOW. When you see someone competing sucessfully year after year, at the upper levels with their own horses, the same horses, for themselves and not some barn or sponsor, you just know that their horses are really living up to their full competitive potential - happily, soundly. OK, end of sermon on the soapbox.. Karen Carson City,NV _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Re: Olympic coverage
This message is from: Ingrid Ivic [EMAIL PROTECTED] have you ever seen the uncut or unedited version of the three day eventing competion? I had someone record the dressage finals for me and some of the eventing was on it too. It made me sick to see what happened to those horses on some of the jumps. I heard that some of them even may have died or had to be put down from their injuries. It was at that time, that I decided to never support the US team again, and I told them so every time they asked for support from me. If you want to talk about cruelty to horses when they put their complete trust in the rider, this is a perfect example. Well time to get off the soap box. I also do not condone any racetracks and will not attend Thoroughbred or Trotter racing because of the young age they start these horses at. Carol M. Hi Carolyes, unfortunately there is cruelty out there. And yes...horrible treatment should not be condoned. I agree. I have a very good girlfriend who has evented, showjumped and even jockied at well known Kentucky and Ohio racetracks. I've heard first hand about some of the so-called training techniques she had witnessed. The things that were done to these horses! (...like hot-water...where water jumps are electrified...so the horse doesn't dare set foot in it a SECOND time...) You can find cruelty everywhere...to horses with fine pedigrees, supported by groups of investors with enormous amounts of money ---and--- cruelty to those horses that are just grade quality, working for a living...either on a farm or as a carriage horse in the big city. They all put their trust in us, don't they? I would STILL like to see more horse related programming on TV. Not necessarily only competitions, but educational and informative as well. It would be nice to further educate and promote the horse to the general public with good segments. Re:olympic coverage
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I agree totally about some of the fixed jumps jumping and thorougbred racing. Why can't they wait until they grow up, so they can stay sound and unbroken? After being the court reporter in a few racetrack cases, I will never go near a racetrack again. It is such a cruel sport. I do want to see the dressage and they never televise dressage. I adore watching dressage and also team penning and cutting. I want to see the reining competition, too (It's just Western dressage, more or less). New Mexico State U has an olympic reining team. This message is from: Bushnell's [EMAIL PROTECTED] I just had a thought that felt good :) In thinking of Laurie Pittman not being able to attend Libby (and others) I wondered if someone couldn't make videos of the parade and highlights of the Fjord show?!? and have copies made to sell?!? I recall this sort of thing has been done in the past.. maybe someone in Fjorddom does this? We'd sure like a copy I know. cat bath joke

Aussie saddles
This message is from: carol j makosky [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi List from hot and humid again in WI, I know it was discussed a while back on the list, but I've decided to try a couple of Aussie saddles that a tack shop sort of near me has for sale. They are used ones in very good shape. On weighs about 40 lbs and I am concerned with that aspect of it and the other appears to be lighter. I think they are both from some outfit in Indiana. I like the contact of the English saddle, but want the security of the western for trail ridding. Thus my interest in the Aussie. And I did ride one about 5 yr ago and liked it very much. So you out there with the Aussie give me some advice. My main concern is that they fit Heidi well. I won't be picking these up till the11th of Sept. I will thank you in advance for any input to my dilemma. -- Built FJORD tough Carol M. On Golden Pond
