Re: fjordhorse-digest V2001 #287
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Fjordhorse List; I am new to the list, and Fjords basically. My name is Deb Weidner, and I live in Livingston, Montana. We moved here 5 years ago from the east coast . (CT) I have one Fjord, FG Brix, who is by Modellen. Mostly I trail ride with him. My husband has a Quarter horse mare, and they get along well. (maybe TOO well!) In the past, we've had Arabs, Morgans, Appaloosas, hunter ponies, thoroughbreds, 1 Hackney, and numerous cross-breds. My Brix is my favorite, he is so mellow and easy-going, which is important at my age! We take the 2 horses into the Gallatin National Forest, and the Absaroka/Beartooth Wilderness, when time permits. My only "problem" with Brix, is trying to keep weight OFF him! I know there's no magic pill for that, but ANY suggestions would be appreciated. I really can't ride him all the time, and I don't feed him anything outside of the grass in his field.(which is about 15 acres) I do take him out a lot, too, and put him in a smaller dry lot. Thanks, Deb

This message is from: "Bill/Liz/Katy/Charlie/Arne" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello from Pennsylvania, I was so excited yesterday when I received "Horse Illustrated" in the mail (The December issue). The featured breed is the FJORD! I remember someone mentioning it a while ago, and had been waiting. Finally! Who are the Fjords in all the pics? Does anyone know? I also noticed the extra fjord adds from various farms. Our breed is represented so well! Katy Andersen and Jon, who is so dusty at the moment from our drought!

selecting a draft harness
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi fjord friends - This is Ann Sigford in Cloquet Minnesota. It is a warmish Halloween for these parts, above freezing. My fjord is Rokida's Draugen. I ride him almost daily, before work. Depending on my mood, I ride beginning dressage in an indoor arena, cross country with home-made jumps, or western along roads and trails. And we love to go with no bridle or saddle and show off (but only indoors!) Here is my question to the knowledgable ones: I'd like to start doing draft work with him, such as raking and rolling the arena. How do I go about selecting a draft harness? I searched our archives and learned a bit. I think I like synthetics because they are lighter, and I am a small person. Camptown seemed to have more for lighter driving than working draft. I checked the JW website and was boggled by the number of collars and hames. I'm looking for the basics, not show gear. Where do you suggest I go from here? Ann

Rubber shoes?
This message is from: Mariposa Farm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Does anyone out there use rubber shoes for doing a lot of driving on asphalt? Do they ease the impact of the foot on the road? Add traction too? Last awhile? How do they cost compared to regular shoeing? Just wondering. I picked up an 1890's stud cart in great condition at the Waverly auction this fall and have been having a blast with it. Also picked up all the hardware to make my Robert and Fils wagon a team hitch (already had shafts). Haven't got to that yet though. Boo! Mark McGinley Mariposa Farm Warm day in northern Wisconsin

Yup. When I send Netscape to www.nfhr.com, it fetches the wallpaper, then quits, declaring "Document done". My direct link to the pedigree site appears to be working OK---although, if I want to select just one state (like Oregon) I still can't "scroll" down the list of states, or move that subwindow; I can only select from the states that "fit" on the screen (Alabama thru Ontario). My first guess is that the site has inadvertently taken advantage of some "Microsoft-ism", which has the unintended side effect that Microsoft browsers can look at it, but not their competitors. So much for "Internet standards" :-( No, I haven't tried any other browsers. My "sys-admin" (husband) has declared this to be a "UNIX" household; no Microsoft products available. I'm glad Fjords aren't this complicated---one can always revert to bareback, with a jaw rope. ;-) Marsha Jo HannahMurphy must have been a horseman-- [EMAIL PROTECTED] anything that can go wrong, will! 15 mi SW of Roseburg, Oregon

Use lots of tape until the cement has a chance to cure. Also, keep the foal confined so it isn't running around a lot. They do work great if you can keep them on, but sometimes you can't. Sometimes a skillful farrier with a rasp can do just as good a job with changing the weight bearing surface of the foot. Don't try to stretch the tendon by lengthening the toe. You will just end up with a dished hoof wall. Has your veterinarian tried tetracycline. This will relax the muscles and sometimes return the fetlock/pastern/hoof back to normal angles. Once you do get them in foal, then they seem to go a little easier the next time. Work with your veterinarian and time the breeding with ovulation as close as possible.
