Re: Question on branding
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thank you, DeeAnna, for your information on branding. Sounds like neither branding or microchipping is worth much unless a person is "looking" for one or the other. Appreciate all the comments on branding - they have been so interesting. This message is from: "fjordcountry" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hey all you fjord nuts! Today was a wonderful day for me. Our very good friend and breeder of fjords, Jim McMillan and I have been dreaming of doing a 4-up with our fjords for awhile. He is an old timer and of course farmed with horses as a youngster and is so full of information. He has been foremost in teaching me about the fjords and driving and I in turn do round penning and ground work etc. for him. We needed a 4-up for pulling our Rock'n KW sleigh ride business Vis a Vis sleigh as with more than 3 people loaded it was a tough pull for one team. Jim came up today and after about 1 1/2 hours of fine tuning the hitches etc. off we went. Goof fjord friends Judy Phelps and Dean and Cathy Conaway were here to take pics, video and lend moral support. It went great, Lief, Emil (full brothers) as the lead team and Elsker, Hans (full brothers) as the back team. We stopped a couple times along the way for minor adjustments but all the boys were calm and cooperative. Jim and I on the other hand were pumped up! His hands got tired so I took over, then we each took a set of lines for the rest of the way. I know Brian, you probably think we are a bit uncouth but boy did we have FUN! Thanks for all your encouragement. I might add also that I have been preparing these guys lunging in the round pen together and working as teams for a long time. Quickly Steve, perhaps synthetic would have been a better choice of words than chemical. Yes, I have had samples taken and they always come up clean or nearly so. I use garlic for the most part but also some Young Living Essential Oils that are specifically for parasite control. I do apologize if I have offended you in any way. Am grateful for all you contributions. But ya know what everybody, today I share my happiness with you all!!! Kathi

Re: brand
This message is from: "Hope Carlson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> My Fjord gelding has a tattoo on the lower lip, the number is on his registry certificate, NFA. I don't know if Norway has a certain brand for the breed like a Trakehner etc. I've seen hot and cold branding, cold seems less traumatic, but still painful, requires some skill to do well. Tattoos have been used a long time and I could see how they could be done relatively painlessly (light sedation, lidocaine). Have to ask my vet. Microchipping seems like the least invasive. Heard they can be hard to read, tho. Hope N IL Hope N IL

The MajorDomo archive doesn't work. Online archives are available at http://www.eScribe.com/pets/fjordhorse/. User name is "fjordhorse" and password is "fjords_rule". At this Web site you can access everything that has been discussed on the list since its inception in March, 1998. -- Steve McIlree -- Pferd & Skipper -- Omaha, NE/Las Cruces, NM, USA The horse has so docile a nature, that he would always rather do right than wrong, if he can only be taught to distinguish one from the other. --George Melville(1821-1878)

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Everyone, Would someone write to me privately and tell me how to retrieve old issues of the digest ? I have tried to use the majordomo 'get' command that is listed at the end of the digests, but get errors with it each time, I might not be using the correct syntax. Thanks. Re: Question on branding
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Linda in MN wrote: "...A brand provides a visual clue to check data on a horse" Yes, you're right it does, but you have to be able to connect the brand with the brand owner. Back in the days when livestock was not usually shipped far and wide, identifying a brand on an animal was a relatively simple matter. Today, it can be very tough to connect a brand with its owner. There is no central registry of brands in the U.S., so you have to contact the brand registry in each individual state. Just finding the state registry is a hassle -- there's no registry of brand registries either! Why do I know this? About 2 years ago, I rescued a small Belgian mare out of the kill pen at a local auction in northeastern Iowa. Annie is a sorrel bay roan. From her coloring and body type, I think she is at least part Brabant (European Belgian). She has a W= brand on her left flank. I'd love to know if she can be registered and what percentage of Brabant is in her breeding. Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to connect the brand with Annie's original owner. I don't know if you'd get much "name recognition" in Minnesota from owning a brand and using it on your horses, Linda. In the midwestern and eastern states, branding is not common. People would have to know to check the MN brand registry for the brand on that hypothetical stolen horse -- and why would anyone have a clue to think that the brand was registered in MN or anywhere east of the Missouri River? If there was a centralized brand registry, that would be a different story I think. DeeAnna
