" This mare's trainer, Jackie Little, of the Rolling L; trainer for Los Triegos Ranch, Santa Fe, New Mexico - originally trained her using some of the British driving "verbal" commands. Some of them are tongue clicks and trills that go along with the usual American, "Come, easy, slow, jog up, whoa". When the mare is moving at a trot, and she is a little bit slower or faster than desired - she has been trained to respond to the driver tongue-click - for each time her right back foot hits the ground. She then, like a good soldier responding to the "hup, 2, 3, 4 " of a drill sargent, touches that foot on the ground to each "click". So, you could actually put 2 horses in different carriages side by side, and have each horse trot with their feet in unison and in stride. She also responds to the "trills" - a purr-like trill that starts high and goes down will slow her down (even when she doesn't respond to easy, easy); a short trill that goes up will stop her in a single step. Waverly prices
This message is from: "Janne" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I posted the prices etc as it is obviously open record, and because I received about 50 emails asking me to do so, and I frankly do not have time to return everyones email. It will go around word of mouth anyhow!! I think it is purely educational, and also because people care where the fjords went. I do NOT think it will effect any market, which is down anyhow. There is a HUGE difference between buying at an auction and buying from a breeder. Lots and lots of risk involved in one, much less in another. And preferably, most people should choose the latter. This is the first I have bought at an auction, BUT I did my homework for months, so was prepared and knew what I was doing. And, by the way, I do not judge anyone who chooses to sell at auction, as long as they have a bottom price so fjords do not just go off for you know where. Janne in ND where Lucky is doing well.
Re: cadenced trot
This message is from: "Hope Carlson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Other listers may prove me wrong, but I do the cadenced trot with Thor sometimes, when he is in the mood and in a Weymouth for riding. A slow to medium trot with lots of impulsion from the rear, upward suspension, distinct footfalls and the ribs swing. Lots of fun to ride and he seems to like it. Sometimes slip it in when he thinks he is being Mr. Hot and Snot, he goes so long and is ready to quit, it is hard work. We've started to get some rides in, feels good to be "back in the saddle again" if somewhat stiff and sore. Started indoor (kindness of friends, wish I had one), now large outdoor and soon the five ac. hayfield for large patterns, then out on the trails. The Spring routine. Love it, no bugs! Wishing everyone a good ride, Hope N IL

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] R. Taylor, Straw Hat Stables How well do Fjords remember? This week I took my 13 yr old mare to her original trainer (who I was fortunate to locate) for a tune-up, and to teach me how to drive her. She was evaluated originally in 1994 at Libby, Montana, under this trainer. Well, she was a tad rusty under saddle on the flying lead changes every 4th step, and a bit stiff on the flex in harness to the left for the "slalom" driving between the poles, but otherwise, the girl hadn't forgotten a thing. On her 2nd day, we took her out for a road drive, where I found she had also been trained to trot to a cadence. It's been at least 4 years since anyone drove her, and at least 6 years since she did ANY dressage, but she was still pretty fair. I love these horses! -- Jumping through hoops to get E-mail on the road? You've got two choices: Join the circus, or use Molly Mail. Stallion Presentation Day
This message is from: "Joe Glick" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I was at the Stallion Presentation Day on Saturday with my stallion "Bayshore Hardy". Jake Blank from Gap, PA also had his stallion "Bayshore Gryla" there. I hadn't seen him since he was a yearling, he is now 3 and has turned into a fine looking stallion. The event was well attended. It rained in the morning, which brought out some of the local farmers that would rather have been plowing their fields. But it quit raining long enough so that I was able to do some driving and riding demonstrations. Hardy was only ridden 2 times before Saturday and I'm not used to riding, so I let my nephew do the riding. I was very pleased with the way he handled and got a lot of nice comments about him. I also got nice comments on the carriage I used for driving. I borrowed a 4 wheel marathon/competition carriage from Carriage Machine Shop in Bird-in-Hand, PA. They are a manufacturer of 2 and 4 wheel carriages and allowed me to use one if I handed out brochures for them. Last year (which was the first year a Fjord was there) many people had no idea what kind of horse it was. This year people would come along and say "Oh, that's a Fjord". Looking quite proud that they knew what it was. It was very interesting talking to people, there seems to be more interest in Fjords. In the forenoon everyone could do demonstrations, then at 11:00 each stallion went through the arena and a description was read along with stud fees. Then each stallion owner had the opportunity to have a stud fee auctioned off, with all the proceeds being donated to hospital bills. Jake and I didn't auction off any services because there would not have been any bidders that we knew of. Hopefully there will be in the future. This year there were fewer Haflingers there, only three, I think. That's less than half as many as last year. It seems that craze is slowing down. More room for Fjords, I say! Was nice to meet Robyn from MD. Now I can put a face to the name. Also met Albert & Mary Smith from my home town of Denver, PA. They own a Fjord gelding. Robyn, I appreciate your thoughtfulness in not wanting to come into contact with the horses because you have Strangles in your barn. I never really worried about picking up diseases at places like that, but I'm sure it can happen. I give my horses natural feed supplements to build up their immune system, and it must work, because a year and a half ago I bought a weanling colt that had Strangles. I didn't notice it till he was here a couple hours and he had already drank from the water trough and was with the other horses. I never separated him from the other horses and the other horses never got it. Joe Glick Glick Family Farm [EMAIL PROTECTED]

West Nile Vaccine
This message is from: "Philis Anderson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Listers, I vaccinated my pregnant mare who is due the middle part of April with WN vaccine on about March 17th. I did this on advice from an equine vet that I email in Minneapolis, as we are about to find ourselves here in northeastern Minnesota without a vetagain! He has had extensive work with WNV out east in Connecticutor thereabouts. So far, no reaction and no early foaland the mare is growing bigger and bigger. He also suggested that I vaccinate her again in May, however, I'm not sure if he understood that she had the series of two doses last year. More questions for him. I have another mare who I need to vaccinate twice this spring because she only received one dose last year. We finally got our winter snow yesterday; about six inches.just enough to make it sloppy...and my Rubbermaid 100 gal stock tank froze last night, darn! Philis Anderson

comical Ravens
This message is from: Jean Ernest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Every spring the Ravens come and gather up gobs of Fjord fur laying around the corrals. They were here last week after I combed out a bunch, altho I put most of Bjarne's longer soft underfur in a bag to save for someone to spin. There wasn't much hair left laying around today as I haven't combed any off for a few days due to the cold nasty weather. Anyway, a raven was scouring around for some hair, and Adel was lying down for a nap..She has very soft thick white "fur" ready to be combed out. The raven must have thought he found the mother lode, so he sidled closer, talking raven talk and began pulling fur off of her. Of course this irritated Adel so she got up. Then this raven started to dance under her nose, looking for all the world like he was courting her, fluffing his feathers, spreading his wings out and holding his head low and upside down looking up at her, all the while making raven noises. So funny! I was watching this from the house. Finally the raven flew up to the fence, which was close behind her rump and danced around talking, amd trying to reach some hair (I couldn't tell how close she was to the fence.) He had a bit of white hair stashed on the top of the post but needed more to make a "load" so finally tried to hop on her rump. This didn't bother Adel much altho she turned around to look at him, but he hopped off back to the fence, "chorteling" as ravens do. About this time I decided to go out and comb some hair off the fjords to provide a supply. Now there is an ample supply of white hair from Adel and Stella and some creamy beige hair from old Bjarne. Still too cold to have a good "Hair day"! And they have a lot left to shed! Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, cloudy and +20 with a nasty wind. Jean Ernest Fairbanks, Alaska mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Stallion Presentation Day - my new barn....
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] First have to say - great story Jean - have to admit I always leave shed hair in one corner of our indoor for bird home building. Took my neice Ellie and we went to Mel's Stable Sat. - thanks to Joe Glick for the great directions and it was nice meeting you and "Hardy" (I think). And those percheron and belgian stallions were HUGE but gorgeous. And the two fjords were so cute. Ellie (13) thinks we should breed Nina this year (actually Nina the 3rd) and would like a "sporty" stallion. What she wants is a "sport" baby for eventing herself. She's working on Nina's jumping little crossrails but honestly I think as drafty as Nina is her personal feelings are all four of her feet belong on the ground or at least as near as possible. She's willing but obviously jumping will not be her forte but that's okay we are not all basketball players so all horses can't do everything. But any and all movement at our barn is halted as both of my mares (Senior Citizen Chareata the Anglo/arab , 30 years/31 in June and Lucinda the Hanoverian 19 years old) are both being treated for Strangles. Both are running very high 104 degree temps - not eating and really look like crap. I thought they were over the worst as both had 99 to 100 temps for several days, no more nasal discharge appetites etc. but it's back full force. Good news is so far Lucinda's yearling (end of May) the warmblood colt (Valdemar) is fine and showing no signs of getting sick. But I am having to stop advertising him for sale until all this is over. Doing some calculating - the Hanoverian got sick almost 2 weeks to the day of when a new pony came in from a dealer's barn. It's our thoughts that he may be a carrier as he never got sick. So out of over 30 animals in the barn - my two are the sickest. Really has put my tush in gear to get my own personal small barn and field built this year. The barn etc. we have always operated out of has no possible way to quarrantine anything when they come in or even now we can only disinfect so much and there's too much in and out with horses now since more are being boarded - and of course all the going to shows/trail rides etc.. Before going to Mel's yesterday I disinfected me/my car.shoes etc. but then also made sure Ellie knew we weren't touching anyone's critters. Having lost a 3 year old Arab years ago to Strangles I am VERY PARANOID NOW. So here I sit with half interest in a small indoor/15 stall barn - with 3 fields and run ins plus trails etc. but I want my own little secure private place for my guys. I have my own little 6 acre property there on the farm so will be building there. It is way uphill (we aren't Freedom Hills/Rolling Hills Ranch for nothing) - a long way from the other barns and fields. Kind of funny - my husband was getting ready to draft out my barn plans (now remember he is the LEAST horsey person I know). He asks me how many stalls I want (and remember I kept saying little). I said I would be happy with 4 stalls and a run in - nothing elaborate. I know me I am such a rescuer etc. that 4 stalls and run in translates to 6 critters, I know this and I recognize my addiction. So he goes to work on his midnight shift (he's a millwright at a power plant) and comes home with this beautiful barn plan. It's ONLY 10 stalls with run ins off both sides - bathroom - tack room/ feed room and small office. And 2 seperate paddocks - oh forgot the storage area for tractor/cart etc. and hay storage area (I'm not crazy about hay storage overtop in a loft - I worry about all the fine little dust filtering down). So while I felt REALLY good in that over the years he has obviously actually heard me when I've said things like: if and when I ever have my own barn I would want this or that (imagine that). At the same time - since I have very sporadic paychecks coming from the nonprofit program. I'm not sure WHERE he thinks the money is coming from to buy the materials to build this and time since we are finishing renovating the house we are in now to sell to build on the other property. His answer to that and I should have read the drafting better is he put an apt. in the loft where we can live while we build the new house. Surprise surprise. Now having a spouse who is very good at all building trades is wonderful most of the time but as the old saying goes about the cobbler's children having no shoes... Well now that I think about it - at least we could move us and the critters and worry about the bigger house later... Have a feeling it may end up we are permanently in the apartment over the barn. Oh well I'll just put a deck on it and still be able to see the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay from my deck chair. Sorry this wandered so long. Wish me luck and please keep Chareata and Lucinda in your prayers. Robyn in MD where my critters an

Overall, good prices for buyers somewhat, tho an auction is an auction, and I would think ok for sellers considering the market in the midwest. Most fjords were quite nice, some were smaller than my taste, but we all like different things. I would say Tim's were very well taken care of and quite nice. Wish I could have brought another mare home, but this is ok, especially with my hubby!! :> Annika died from uterine problem about a month ago or so. Tekla is NOT bred as stated. Waverly prices
This message is from: "Rick Leader" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello listers, I would like to comment on the recent discussion about Waverly prices. Some of the prices given are incorrect. There are no descriptions or details provided about any of the horses listed, therefore, many listers will have no idea what the training, age, etc. were at this sale. I do not believe posting this to the list is favorable to the fjord horse. The reason being, if you bought your fjord mare for $5000. and now you see these prices posted on the list, would you not consider that you paid too much for your mare? On a little lighter note, BDF Donder and Haakon are on their way home with Pat Wolfe, as of this morning. If you would like to view their most recent photos, check out www.geocities.com\leaderlane They are certainly a handsome pair of geldings. Go to Page 1 Gallery Visitors. Re: Small Farmer's Journal Draft Horse Sale
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] In a message dated 3/30/2003 10:24:39 AM Pacific Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > I am going > to the Sister's OR sale and there are suppose to be some Fjords there. I will comment on this one. First off, please know that this is NOT a general "livestock" auction; not a place to "get rid of" unwanted stock. Our Draft / Driving Horse Auction is not attended by meat buyers, as the animals consigned are not what would be considered potential slaughter horses. We usually get 40 - 80 head of good draft, draft cross, and similar horses. This year we are also having some good saddle horses and also several PMU foals (originally out of Canada) from a dude ranch near Sisters. As for Fjords - we were originally contacted a couple months ago by Galbraith's (Proud Bottom Ranch), who at that time said they would possibly consign up to 21 head to our sale. Since then we have heard nothing more from them. Our phone calls to confirm (or not) what they may be bringing have not been answered / returned. So at this point I cannot say if and/or what we may have coming in the way of Fjords. I do know that a few of the PMU foals may be fjord crosses. As soon as I have any concrete info on any Fjords coming to the Small Farmer's Journal sale, I will let the list know (I am the Horse Sale Secretary) for those who may be interested. New to list
This message is from: "windago" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello everyone. My name is Teresa and I am new to the list. I live in Missouri where no one has heard of a Fjord. I currently own one Fjord gelding named Ben. He is 6 yrs old. He is such a hoot. We are trying to break him to cart. He is very good at ground driving and pulling the travios. He has even been hooked to the two wheeled cart for a few minutes with out so much as fluttering an eyelid. Just wanted to formally introduce myself to the list and I enjoy hearing about all the Fjords out there and your adventures with them. Teresa

Re: Small Farmer's Journal Draft Horse Sale
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Amy, Thanks for the clarification on Fjords at Sisters. We have gone to this sale for several years and have always thought that this was the place to look for high quality draft animals. We have always been impressed by what we saw there. In fact, that is where I saw my first Fjord! I fell for them then. We were trying to decide on Fjords or Halflingers and were lucky enough to find them both there. Of course, the Fjords won hands down! Barb Lynch
