wolves
This message is from: "Philis Anderson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I haven't posted for awhile, but thought I'd let everybody know that the timber wolves and coyotes (most of them) are doing well here in northeastern Minnesota. Two weeks ago a coyote attacked our favorite pet goose (who has imprinted on my husband). The coyote almost killed the goose, but two weeks of penicillin injections and tender loving care, "Gooser" who is well over 15 years old, is out of the woods! As I type this note, I can hear the coyote through our bedroom window yelping down in the wood. These small wolves have a very high pitched bark, yodel and laugh. Very creepy! This afternoon I took one of my mares out for a ride in the woods and we (horse and me) could hear the coyote barking nonstop. The mare was a bit anxious to get home because her baby was in the barnmaybe she thought she should be there to protect the filly. This morning I heard one of my dogs barking just up the hill behind the house..his bark told me that there was a wild animal in the pasture. I thought perhaps it was a moose. They frequently pull our fence down and run through the pasture with wire, posts and all. It wasn't a moose, but the biggest timber wolf I've ever seen!! Twice the size of my lab. He was slinking away with his tail between his legs and my dog, Roy, was no more than five feet from him !! Then Hanna, my other dog, came running to help Roy chase the wolf away. Of course, I was very concerned where the horses were, because the mare and filly were in that pasture. They had come down to the barn and were standing there looking up to the hill where the wolf had been. I jumped in my car and drove to the other end of the pasture to see that the other horses were ok. We've never had timber wolves attack our horses in more than 30 years, but our neighbor who raises cattle has had frequent attacks. Tonight the horses are in the front pasture.I'd hate to have the wolves break my record of 30 years! They have becoming more bold and more numerous in the last few years. After a blustery week last week, I think we're going to have some good riding and driving weather this week. Yea! I hope for good health to return to Amy and all the sick horses on the list. Vilde update
This message is from: "Knutsen Fjord Farm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Vilde is doing worse again, less interested in food, more depressed, higher temp. The vet is trying a broader-spectrum antibiotic. We are a mess. More thanks for all your support, ideas, and encouragement. Peg Peg Knutsen - Ellensburg, WA http://www.elltel.net/kffjord/
Oops forgot- more-four-ups.
This message is from: "Ursula & Brian Jensen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Dear list from Brian Jensen; I had just closed down the computer when two more Fjord teams of four came to mind. 1-Ted Svendson--Alberta--CDE& Pleasure 2-MiddletonsSaskatchewan--Parades Aside from the various hitches mentioned being done in the West, there is one more I drove the last time at Libby in unique class. It is a pair on the wheel led by a harnessed tandem hitched in front of the pair. I dubbed it the--suicide hitch--or it could be called a unicorn plus one. evalutation and Duster update
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have been remiss in not writing the list and telling everyone how much fun it was to attend the Cincinnati evaluation as a spectator. This was my first Fjord event. It was SO MUCH FUN! I'm encouraging everyone who has not gone to one, to do so, without a horse the first time. I had the opportunity to talk, talkand talk some more because I wasn't busy getting a horse ready for something. What valuable time spent. My first impressionEVERYONE was exceedingly friendly and open to all questions. The one thing I did learn was, I should have attended an evaluation BEFORE I purchased, only because I could have made a more intelligent purchase, body type wise, conformation etc. The evaluators discussion, at the end of each group, gave me a clearer understanding of so many things. Bravo and thanks to everyone who worked so hard, and was so gracious. On to a Duster update. Last spring I asked the list for help with my crabby, distant, uncooperative 5 year gelding. I was contemplating selling him because I wasn't sure he would ever be safe. We've been home from the training barn since mid-July. I've been riding, rather than driving, in a western saddle. He has been wonderful! Sweet, pleasant, glad to see me and riding is going well. The attitude and mood has done a total 360. I'm not sure if it was the chiropractic work, or the supplements, or simply being home again, however we are making good progress. Thanks again to everyone who has been so helpful. Western saddles
This message is from: Vicki & Tony Johnston <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I was unable to get a fit with either full quarter horse bars, or semi-quarter horse bars. My little guy is in-between, and the western saddles were too long. I've had good luck with an ortho-flex so far. They will also custom-build just about any saddle now on shorter panels.
