Re: Fall Fjord Fest in Carson City, NV!
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Everyone- This weekend proved quite an adventure for myself and Knute. "All's well that ends well" would be a good description... My paternal Grandmother passed away recently, and my Dad was pretty shook up about it. I invited him to join me on the trip to put his attention on something positive. I was sure glad for the company when, 50 miles outside of Carson City, coming over the mountain pass in the dark, my truck blew a fuse and we had no tail lights! There was really nowhere to pull over, and no cell phone coverage, so we soldiered on with only the hazard lights behind. A guardian angel soon appeared and drove behind us all the way, passing only when we got into town. We easily located the fairgrounds where Dagrun and Robert were waiting, and unloaded tired Knute. Next morning, word was that the show would start later than planned. With fewer than 10 entrants, some classes would be canceled and others would move very quickly. Horses were eating and riders were drinking coffee and chatting. I relaxed and waited for word. Suddenly I hear that classes will begin in 10 minutes! I dressed quickly, pulled Knute out of the stall, threw the saddle onto his back and jumped into it. Very, very bad program for any horse, especially this fiery one! My stress level hit the red when the announcer repeatedly called over the P.A. "Brigid Wasson please to the arena, Brigid, last call!" I headed in that direction, then heard Dad calling "Brigid, you forgot your whip!" I turned just in time to see him running towards me waving it. That was all she wrote for Knute, who did what he always does when a whip is pointed and waved at him. In a moment I was on the ground. I opened my eyes to see Dad, blurry and double. I had a moment of terror, thinking I had a bad head injury. Next thing I see is Dad's finger poking through my eyeglass frame -- a lens is missing, the reason for my blurry vision. I can't see and I've hit my head on concrete (I later saw that my helmet was smashed), so my day is over. I should have been more disappointed, but I guess I was just happy to walk away from such a serious accident. I untacked a confused Knute, dressed in my regular clothes, and got in the truck. Dad drove to Kragen Auto for super glue and fuses. My glasses were soon fixed and we returned to the fair grounds. I missed all the flat classes, but did manage to watch jumping. I tried to watch pairs through the cones, but the earth suddenly moved under me and I doubled over with nausea. Back to the motel where I watched silly shows on TV and Dad watched me. By evening I felt better and managed to attend the barbecue. Prepared by Gail Russell and her husband Jim, it was delicious. After dinner some of us went to Betsy Bauer's booth and purchased Fjord must-haves like paintings and socks! Next day was the trail ride. I didn't get my hopes up, but wanted very much to participate. I was so happy to wake with a clear head and only muscle soreness from the fall. I felt it was very important for me to do the ride. First, this was my opportunity to show everyone what a super horse Knute is. I've been writing about his progress on the list for several years, and this was our first outing in the Fjord world. Second, I was more than a little anxious about the fall and had visions of it happening again. Its cause was obvious and preventable, but still, fear has a way of being irrational. I knew if I rode right away and had a good time I would be "cured." Otherwise, the fear might cling for a while and I wanted no part of that. I got up early and spent a good deal of time warming up! I free lunged Knute and did clicker exercises both at the fairgrounds and the park. I saddled slowly and, while Dagrun held him, clicked for standing still as I half-mounted several times. Once I was in the saddle, she walked him around in a small circle till he was focused, then let go. No problems. The ride was beautiful. Carson City Nevada is so different from what I'm used to. It's a high desert environment with short tough plants and trees in fall color. Knute was a champ, as sure-footed as ever over the shifting sand and big rocks. We rode into water, which he loves. He splashed and drank deeply. Just after this, someone decided we should line up for a picture. I looked down and thought, "Hmm, this sand is just right for rolling." No sooner did I think this, but my feet were on the ground! I jumped away and screamed as everyone laughed. This broke the ice and exorcised my tension. For the rest of the ride I was chuckling about this. Dad took the time to fix things on the truck and trailer while I was riding, so we left with a much safer rig! I vote for this location and a similar program for future Fjord Fests! / )_~ /L/L Brigid Wasson SF Bay Area, CA www.Brigid.Clickryder.com

Re: Therapy Horses from BDF demonstrate at Gladstone & other good things . . .
This message is from: "Arthur Rivoire" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello Everybody from Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia - Our Stable Manager, Jaimie Benoit, just returned from two weeks in New Jersey where she was house & barn sitting for one of our customers. -- Beth Swain who owns the Fjord geldings, BDF Quest, 4 yrs. and Sigmund, a lot older, has a daughter who with her Air Force husband just had a baby in Japan. Beth had to fly out and see the new grandson and asked Jaimie to stay with her entourage (horses, many dogs, cats & birds). -- But, before she and her husband left, they took Jaimie to see the Gladstone Fall Event, and much to Jaimie's astonishment, there doing a Thereapeutic Riding demo were BDF Annelise, 19 yr. old mare, and Axel, 13 yr. old gelding. -- Both these horses were consignment horses with us last summer and were sold to the Therapeutic Center in NJ. -- The commentary at Gladstone stressed how well the Fjords were doing for the program and that based on the abilities of the horses, the Center was now starting a Therapeutic Driving Program. Also, based on the Center's experience with the two BDF Fjords, they'd purchased a third Fjord for their program. Those who've read my book, THE FJORDHORSE HANDBOOK will recall the chapter at the end of the book called "Notes from Nova Scotia". -- In it, I tell about the wonderful reception we had from all the neighbors when we moved here in 1991. -- I told about one neighbor bringing a basket of blueberries. How when we walked into the house for the first time, there was a sign on the wall saying -"Welcome Home to Nova Scotia" and on the kitchen table, a pot of corn chowder and a plate of homemade biscuits". Well, the good things keep happening here, and our neighbors, and in fact, all the people who live here, are so nice, welcoming and inviting. -- Just recently, one neighbor showed up with a big bucket of fresh picked blackberries. Another came by with wild blueberries, and yet another with a sack of wild cranberries picked right down at Pomquet Beach. -- There certainly is nothing like a gift from the heart. ~ Our Beaver Dam Farm 2003 Newsletter will soon be on its way to all those who've in the past three years been to our Nova Scotia Beginner Driving Vacations, and all who are NFHR members. I think you'll all enjoy the many many fun pictures. -- We had a truly wonderful summer with the driving/riding vacations. -- We're getting more and more families with children, and while we don't have a specific program for children, we're always able to devise one that works for the kids and for the parents. -- And we're finding that the kids are really great and add a lot to everybody's enjoyment. -- Of course, Champie, our dog is totally beside himself with excitement whenever children arrive. ~~~ Sales Page on our website -- It's all new, so check out the beautiful, well-trained horses.
