Carole,

I use a light weight beta harness with collar and hames. It does not look
like the typical draft harness. I drive a meadowbrook cart. My pony does
very well in this type of harness. I find that they pull better especially
up hills.

I think that the choice of harness largely depends on what you are
pulling. Without collar and hames, you have a "pleasure harness" more
suitable to a cart or carriage. If you are pulling heavier apparatus
such as a wagon or farm appliances, a hames and collar type would be the
correct choice. The hames and collar are more universal. I have seen
Haflingers shown on cart with a show type collar and hames. If you are
to show, check the restrictions of that group.

I love to look at old pictures of horses in everyday use. As a
firefighter, I was particularly interested in the ones pulling fire
apparatus. I was surprised at how light the harness was! Perhaps for
speed...

I'm looking forward to what the more experienced folks on the list have
to say about all this!

Hi Lisa,
Most of the Fjord drivers that I know in my area use the collar and
hames. In fact if I were to buy another harness for my Fjord I would go

with that.

My favorite part of the site - was how they met, and all she went through,
when Guusje came to her. No saddle for awhile - so she road bareback and made
a rope halter/reins. I can relate! TinyTim was my love, several years ago
- took every penny I could scrape together to get him. Nothing left over for
even an old used saddle. So for months, I rode him on the trails bareback.

The story of how Guusje and the lady worked their way up - to quit the
riding level / showing they are doing now - is very impressive! Hooozah for
her
courage, and her faith in Guusje!

Happy trails!

You NorthWest folks are in for a real treat, although, I must say, I'm
very sorry to loose Pam and Dave from New England. The McWethys have
been involved with Fjords since, well, a pretty long time. They have
some great stories to share. Ask Dave about his drive across country, or
training and competing Modellen for 100 mile endurence driving. Pam has
great stories about the early days of the registry and the 40 Fjord air
lift from Norway. You couldn't have two nicer people coming to your

This message is from: "Ruth Bushnell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

A Norwegian story about talking animals:

SORRY... see that link didn't work... here's the story:

In the frosty mountains and on the snowy fields of Norway, there is a legend
that draws children to all kinds to stables and stalls throughout the
country on each Christmas Eve night. They are hoping to hear a miracle. They
are waiting to hear the animals talk.

Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus was born in a stable in Bethlehem. This was no
abandoned place, but was a working stable, filled with animals of all kinds.
Into these humble surroundings, encircled by the innocent creatures of God,
the Savior of man came into the world.

Now according to legend, at least, Christ's birth occurred at exactly
midnight. Inside the stable, the animals watched in wonder as the new-born
babe was lovingly wrapped in swaddling clothes and placed in a manger.
Suddenly, God gave voice to the animals and immediately they began to praise
God for the miracle they had just seen. This went on for several minutes
and, just before the entrance of the shepherds -- who had hurried to the
stable because angels had told them the Christ had been born there -- the
animals again fell silent. The only humans who had heard them were Mary,
Joseph and, of course, the Christ child.

The legend of the talking animals persists to this day in Scandinavia. And
every Christmas Eve, wide-eyed children creep into stables just before
midnight to hear the animals praise God for the wondrous birth of His Son.
Of course, adults scoff at this. "Old wives tales," they grump. "Those
children should be home in bed, not out in the cold waiting for the family
cow to preach a sermon."

But the children know -- or at least believe -- that animals really do
praise God at midnight every Christmas Eve. And who of us -- those who
believe in an all-powerful God -- can say that it really doesn't happen?

Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God
all things are possible." (Matthew 19:26 NIV)

Breeders Dream

This message is from: "Green Valley Farm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Just received this message from a wonderful new Fjord owner. She recently
bought GVF Jordbaer from Green Valley Farm. This is what makes breeding and
training all worth while.

Hello!
I just had to email you after this weekend. I had a fantastic trail ride on
Saturday afternoon with Jordbaer (Ture stayed at home). I went with four
other folks who trail ride around here a lot and who wanted to show me all
the local great trails I can get to from my house without a trailer. We
were gone for hours, though beautiful woods, fields, crossing rivers (!!!),
up and down steep inclines, hopping over logs, cantering all over the place.
We saw foxes and deer and birds. Nothing really phased her. They were all
on their big brown horses and were SO impressed with her. They could not
believe how brave and well-mannered and adorable she was and that she was
only three! She was so great, did everything I asked, took good care of me
and looked like she was having a great time herself! We cantered a lot,
more than I had ever before with her and it felt great! I am so thrilled
with her--she is the best! She got lots of hugs and a good rubdown
afterward.
Just wanted to let you know what a fantastic time we are having! Thanks to
you and Mac again for making her what she is to me -- a lovely companion,
partner and friend.

T'was the Barn, Before Christmas!

2004-12-24 Thread Ruth Bushnell
This message is from: "Ruth Bushnell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

T'was the Night Before
Christmas

The Barn was a-bu
with whinnies and nickers
'cause that's what horse does!

The Legend was echoed
through all of the walls
excitement was mounting
in all of the stalls !

The weanlings, in wonder
had heard of the tale
as they all gathered round
to munch on a bale !

The fillies, the geldings,
the stallions and mares
then told of the Legend
amidst wide eyed stares.

When all of a sudden
they heard on the roof
the flutter of wings
the landing of hoof !

His wings how they glistened
his whinny so proud
as he entered the barn
astounding the crowd...

Who stood there awaiting
the Pegasus dear
the truth of the Legend
was blatantly clear !

The rider descended
from Pegasus' back
his hat and his boots
were glistening black

His spurs how they jingled
with a wonderful song
that would echo in memories
for all the year long !

He gave out the gifts
of carrots and treats
then sprang to his saddle
for a hasty retreat...

For the hour was late
and he just had to leave
but now, all the weanlings
would finally believe !

And as Pegasus flew then
away in the night
the horses enchanted
by the wondrous sight..

Had hearts filled with joy
and the barn filled with love
and mares will tell foals
of Pegasus from above !
