Re: friendly
This message is from: "Lisa Wiley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I think this list is very good. I have seen tons of fighting on other lists. I really think that when you make contact has a lot to do with how friendly people are. All the people on the list have been very friendly. I was at Equine Affaire in MA last year and the people were a little cold. I can understand they are talking to tons of people all day. Some also get to see friends that they don't usually see. As a dog show enthusiast I always do better being contacted before the show. Setting up a time to talk when I am not preoccupied with what is going on around me. People need to understand that you are at a function for a reason. Sometimes that takes precedence over spending time with new people. Here in sandy, gritty S. UT. we have 90 % of our herd barefoot. That is because they spend most of their time home on soft ground, matted stalls, dirt paddocks and a sandy round pen. Our show string need shoes. The miles we put on them during the training process wears their shoes down in even 6 weeks. Hoofs do not last even a few miles with real work. My S+R Fjord, Ayla has 4 around. Kaiser, who had near foundered in all 4, 11 yeards ago when we got him, wears front shoes with pads to stay sound. My CDE pair is in 4 shoes right now, but will wear only fronts for maintaining condition. The vitamins we feed have a fair amount of Biotin, so that does help. The barefoot riders that I ride with have horses that struggle with soundness following our training days, on rocks or even on pavement. No wheels, no horse. Lisa

Our demo times are Saturday at 12:40 and Sunday at 9:50 with our practice time Thursday at 3:20. Nancy and Rich Hotovy are the group leaders and Tyler and Dawn Schlickman, Jessica Katzman, Mike and Susie Sadlon, Patti Jo Walter and her husband Dave, Joni Griffin and her husband Ray, Lauren Hallberg, Steve and Jill Chestler, Robin Holland (my daughter) Gary Holland (my husband) and myself will all be there. Melinda Springs (the owner of Hostar, whom I will be presenting) will be coming in and helping from Idaho .I assure you this group will welcome you. We all get busy at times (right before the demo's) but it is one time we can all get together with no competition and we really have a very fun time. By Sunday we are all in a semi-coma and silliness abounds. You can't miss us, Rich is THE one in the black bowler hat - very respected in the draft world -Mike is the one in an old cowboy type hat that looks like it was run over 100 times, and he and Rich do the draft events together - Tyler also wears a cowboy hat, black, and he is the one with numbers on his socks (private joke), He also is a very good draft and driving individual. Nancy is the one who looks like she always has it together and our leader, Susie is a hairdresser, funnier than all get out and her hair is always perfect and she is always laughing - the type you just want to hug, Dawn is also a "put together well" person, very tidy and happy and our organizer deluxe, Jessica is a beautiful young lady, that although she has a boyfriend will probably have a line of young men following her around, Joni Griffin is our Martha Stewart, she makes all of our costumes, she has a great imagination and talent - her husband Raymond is drop dead handsome and has an English accent, and is always taking pictures and videos, Patti Jo is the "hyper" one, she is the one that never sits still - the energizer bunny -and her husband, Dave is quiet, calm and comforting - he works in a nuclear power plant - so we HOPE he is always calm (and also good looking), I am short, fat and paranoid, my daughter is tall and confident and my husband, a dairy farmer, is about as down to earth and friendly as they come and still wears the same size jeans he wore when we met 20 + years ago.. Melinda is an enthusiastic and very friendly lady, with a great sense of humor and outlook and loves her horse like no other owner I've ever known..., Steve and Jill Chesler are new to the breed, first time Fjord owners, he's an attorney and she used to work for the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicagothey just bought two of the horses Tyler trained and will be bringing and we will be on a shopping spree the whole time!so there is a wide variety of people, from different backgrounds and personalities sharing this event with our love of the breed and we all share a good sense of humor, good friendships and love of the breed. With all of that information you already know US..so just stop in and hunt us down. See you there Pat Holland
Re: friendly
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I don't think I have run across a single Fjord person I could call unfriendly at all. From people on this list who have been generous and sharing with their time, to total strangers who have answered my direct emails and phone calls and spent hours talking to me, to Fjord merchandisers who provide incredible service. Last year I attended a small Fjord show, knowing no one at all. A few people went out of their way to introduce themselves, and I went out of my way to introduce myself to some of the others, making sure I had something to offer, share or ask. Without exception everyone was willing to chat and talk about our favorite topic: the ponies!! When I was purchasing my Fjord I had the chance to talk to many people asking for advice and opinions. Everyone was open, honest, and willing to share. Having spent time with lots of other horse people, I've always felt the Fjord folks were the best. I feel a tremendous affinity for them. As I told one of the folks at the show last year, this is an entire group of people who tend to act like me, like the same things in a horse I do, and heck, I even think we all kind of look alike. And if you want to see list feuding, join the Parelli list . This group is a virtual love fest!! Kate and Joe (basically, the best pony ever) In a message dated 4/4/2006 11:17:28 P.M. Re: Tornadoes
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear Suzan, I wish I knew the answer to your question. We don't have as many tornadoes as they do out in the grain belt but we get them often enough to scare the heck out of me. I put my horses in the barn but I'm a long way from saying that that's the best idea...it's just what I do to protect them from other things (blizzards, freezing rain, thunderstorms, etc.) so it's what I do for twisters too. I know that for direct hits it won't really matter what I do...the storm will always win. You just do the best you can and hope it's not your turn. Take care and good luck to all of us. This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Linda, My trusty gelding and I do CDEs and I've found it to be a good idea to shoe for them because all kinds of terrain plus heaven knows what kind of weather can sure make the footing slippery (at the very least)! Unfriendly fjord people
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Hope, Not all are unfriendly. I own only 1 fjord. Sorry you met such a person. I would never have a person with a temperament like that,, teach me or my horses anything. Nothing good would come of it. What you are seeing in general,,,sadly happens with most breeds. The Icelandic's are just the same. There are "some" breeders and so called trainers that really should not be doing either. If you look around and ask enough folks,, sooner or later you will find the trainers with the kind heart that really know what they are doing. They will not cause you to cry or tear you down. They will just quietly show you what needs to be done, while making you feel on top of the world!. ;O) Keep heart,,, Shari In a message dated 4/4/2006 8:17:26 P.M. tornadoes
This message is from: karen kathka <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Suzan, Thats a question that haunts me every Spring. On March 12 when tornadoes ripped through Mo. I did not sleep all night, as sirens went off and 4 tornadoes hit all around us. Luckily we just got wind and hail. Some of you may remember when I posted about the tornado just south of town in 2003,destroying a hunter-jumper barn, they lost three horses, most all were in the barn, it was thought those farred better that were out. On March 12 an F3 tornado followed almost an identical path toward Springfield hitting the Clever area again and after just completing a new barn from the last one they were unbelievably hit again! The whole barn took a direct hit and was destroyed. One horse lost he was out, another survived after being rescued from the collapsed barn walls. This time most were out only three were in. Many more hurt this time lacerations, bruises, eye injuries, etc. but my vet said they were all expected to pull through. This tornado took out an entire subdivision so there was probably more stuff flying around in the air. I asked my vet what she thought, based on what she saw she said inside would keep them safe from flying debri, but that is only if you don't take a direct hit and the barn survives. The thing with tornadoes you just never know. And I have seen pictures taken in this area recently where the strongest looking structures have been ripped off foundations. I wish I knew what was best, after witnessing this twice now I can only hug my Fjords and be very thankful we have never been hit. On thier website stokelyfarms.com you can see pictures of some of the horses and the destruction from both tornadoes, they also have a link to thehorse.com that did an article about them.
