All purpose or Dressage

2006-06-17 Thread Lisa Wiley

I want to thank all of you that answered me publicly and privately. It
seems most like their saddles. Many say 36 width works best. It seems
that Wintecs and Duetts are the most popular. My next question is why a
dressage saddle? Many have dressage saddles instead of all purpose and
like them better for trails. They look like they would be more comfortable
for riding in long stirrups.

Re: Another good story about Fjords from Beaver Dam Farm

2006-06-17 Thread Beaver Dam Farm

This message is from: Beaver Dam Farm [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia --

Here's a story that proves Murphy's Law as it applies to horses. --- Who
would have thunk it?

Yesterday, somebody dragged the hose across the driveway to fill a water
tank on the other side. There were two mares in that field. -- One of
them was Ysbet, a gorgeous and super moving daughter of the imported
stallion, Ronaldo, who is now competing in dressage in the Atlanta area. --
Jaimie and Kelly, our trainers, were just inside the barn at the cross-ties.
Suddenly, they noticed that the hose attached to the hydrant was rapidly
whipping out of its coil. -- They immediately guessed what had happened,
and raced across the drive to the turnout where the mares were. -- Ysbet
had the hose coiled around a hind leg, and it was pulled very tight. -- At
first the girls thought they'd have to cut it off which would have been
tricky. It was dangerously tight, and if Jaimie and Kelly hadn't been on
the spot, we shudder to think what might have happened.

However, Ysbet stayed calm and Jaimie and Kelly were able to turn her around
a couple of times until the hose loosened. -- It's in a situation like
this that you thank your lucky stars for the innate trust, good sense, and
calmness we have in this breed. -- The horse could have been seriously
injured if she'd panicked, which most horses would have. And, of course,
the would-be rescuers could have been injured. -- We've always said that
in cases like this, it's not the initial problem that causes the major
problem . . . . It's how the horse reacts, and most breeds of horses panic
and try to run when they feel themselves caught in something. -- Over
the last 27 years, we've experienced three or four instances of this type
(where the horse had a leg caught), and each time, it turned out to be a
non-event thanks to the enviable character we have in this breed.

When Jaimie and Kelly told me about it, I was astounded because, really . .
. Who would have thought a garden hose could be such a danger?

Regards, Carol Rivoire

Genie,

Thanks. I will have my daughter Claire ask Marcy. She is at Briar Hill
now. We will be going up there in a few weeks so I probably could stop in
Bennington. I have also asked Claire to have Marcy try my Passier on Fjiona
and see how the fit is. If she thinks it can be reflocked I may try that.
Claire told me it would not fit. Yesterday I found out she hasn't tried it
yet. I am sure it is because Marcy has her very busy.

Lisa Wiley

Hi Lisa,
We have several saddles that you can try when you come to pick up Fiona.
We keep close to two dozen saddles (all purpose, dressage, close
contact, trail, Western) as no two Fjords are exactly alike and Saddle
fit/comfort is absolutely essential to the training of a horse. (we also
train those brown horses with funny backs)
Miss Fiona has an unusual Fjord back so don't rush out and but a 36 cm
tree! She is not very wide for a Fjord and has prominent withers! Her
back is not flat - table top like many Fjordies. Currently her back is
not one that would be appropriate for a treeless saddle, in my opinion.
I find the treeless can put pressure on the withers even with padding.
(We have three different kinds you can check out while you are here).
We currently have Fiona in a Wintec, all purpose, Cair panels, MW tree.
I would anticipate as she is worked more, her back will develop more
muscle and she will need a wider tree. Already her back has changed some.
I like the Cair panels and the flexibility of the changeable gullet of
the new Wintecs. Although the saddles don't fit everybody in the barn
(doesn't work as well on a shorter backed horse) They are a nice saddle
at a reasonable price. If you prefer leather, the Bates have the same
panels and changeable gullets, but are pricier.
I'll most certainly try your Passier. And if the Passier is a close fit,
I can arrange for a saddle fitter to come before Fiona leaves, if you
like. (We have a Combined Driving Clinic here this week end and yes,
both Claire and I are pretty busy!). We don't like to send horses home
with out being sure their equipment - saddles, bit, harness, cart, etc.
are safe and comfortable. We are committed to horses going home safe,
comfortable and happy and happy owners, too. Of course, I hope you're
planning on a couple of lessons before you head home, so that you are
comfortable with how she has been trained.
As for bits, Fiona is so far, most happy in a Myler comfort snaffle. (I
may try several bits over the course of training a horse to find what
they are most comfortable in, gives clear communication and the horse
can stay soft) .

I am an avid list lurker - today I spent all day at the barn with Henry, my 4

raspberry field. The garage sale balloons were a good experience, and the kid
on the bike - who warned me he was coming - I just bought a stock trailer,
but feel it is height challenged - 6'5 - Henry is probably 15 hands, and
everyone is telling me he will bump his head.don't want that, so its for
sale, after I put a new floor, wiring, etc..but I don't want this post to
sound like a garage sale SO I'll just tell you about the Meadowbrook, as it is
a screaming deal:I have had it for a couple of years, and since I don't use
it...

Jim,

Oh please, you know as well as we know that you did not have your mare ready
and you were notified every day of our arrival for 2 weeks prior. In fact,
you asked us to just stay in Billings for about a week at our cost until
your mare came into season because you admittedly forgot to start her on the
hormonal program. When we said no, you cancelled the breeding.

Deposits for breedings are non-refundable. For the umpteen time, just look
at your contract. This is the end of this subject as far as I am concerned.
