Is he a Belgian?
This message is from: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I took my little fjord Ben to a local horse show last weekend. Showed him in halter just for kicks and he was being judged against mainly quarter horses. The judge looked him over and asked "A Belgian?" I told him, No, a Norwegian Fjord. He then asked how old? I told him 10 yrs. Of course Little Ben did not place. The judge told me when exiting the arena " How do you judge a guy like him? It is like judging apples and oranges". I felt like telling him that you judge against breed standards, but obviously he was a quarter horse judge. We just smiled, thanked him for his time. I was impressed that Little Ben walked to the judge and trotted away and did not MOVE A FOOT after setting up in line. I was SOOO proud of my "little belgian" . Took Little Ben and my gaited appaloosa Bubba on a trail ride today. Everybody did great. I even cantered on Little Ben..we have NEVER done this under saddle as I was told that his previous owner had never done a canter on him. He did FINE!! Of course, he WAS trying to catch up to my longer legged appy who walks a bit faster when in the lead. Both horses were just perfect gentlemen. I had taken my gaited appy to the same local horse show a few weeks back so that my neighbor girl could ride. I was pulled aside by the judge ( different from Ben's judge) and was told:" He is an appy"...of which I replied, Yes,."well this is a gaited class".Yes, I repliedhe is a gaited appaloosa. The judge then stated that she had never seen a gaited appy before. So on we went to our country pleasure class. I kept my appy in a pace since my young rider has been working only at a pace for the favorite gait. After the class, THIS judge pulls me aside and tells me that my horse paces. I told her Yes, that he does in the arena since the footing is soft, but he will do a running walk on harder ground. She then informed me that a pace is not a recognized gait in the United States. I had never EVER heard of this since Icelandics pace and Standardbreds pace. She said again , not in the US. I just thanked her for her time and exited the arena. I was then talking with some other gaited horse people and was told that according to the rules, in a country pleasure class, a pace is an acceptable gait. I was just glad that Bubba did everything his young rider asked and never missed a beat even when the BIG lick riders came flying around the arena on his back side. So, just wanted to share my stories. My Ben and Bubba are just better at being trail ponies than halter/pleasure horses.although it is a PLEASURE to be able to ride both of my guys!! Re: selling a fjord
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear Sue, ?My heart goes out to you on needing to sell your fjords to new homes.I am usually just a lurker and am new to fjords; only having Alf & Valdemar for almost a year. There was a 35 year gap between falling in love with horses and having the privilege of being owned by them; so I can empathasize. Since I am not a spring chicken I hope that when my health issues preclude my being able to give the boys the life they deserve; I can make as courageous a decision as yours. I wish you peace; and if your travels ever bring you to NJ feel free to contact me so you can get in some Fjord hugs. Re: Kez & Heather
This message is from: Debbie Hunt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Sue, I am sorry to hear you could not keep your Fjords. I just got my first Fjord Saturday. He is a 3 yr. old gelding and he is wonderful. I can imagine how difficult it was for you to let yours go. I may be interested in the all purpose saddle. Do you have a picture or can you direct me to a site that illustrates the saddle. I am looking for a 17 1/2 broadback saddle. What color is the leather? Debbie Sue Clark-Sorger <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: This message is from: "Sue Clark-Sorger" My beautiful fjords Heather and Keswick are now in Wisconsin with Patti Jo Walter for training and to be sold. Because of continuing back and eye problems I just couldn't manage the work caring for them any longer. It has been a difficult time making the decision and following through and actually loading them on the transport and sending them. I still find myself in tears when I write or talk about them. It is hard to get older and find there are things you can no longer do. So if you are looking for a Fjord check out Patti Jo web site at franciscreekfjords.com she has more than just mine for sale. I have some items for sale, I have 2 - 51/2 inch mullen mouth driving bits for sale, they are the 2 hole rather than 3. $30 each and I will pay the cost of shipping. I also have an Ortho-Flex, Patriot saddle that was used on the Fjords it has an 18 inch seat. I would like $1000 and I will pay the postage. The web site for Ortho-Flex is ortho-flex.com click on Endurance saddles and then Patriot. Very comfortable saddle and also light weight. Also a Thorowgood, Broadback, All Purpose English saddle, 171/2 inch seat, synthetic, also used for the Fjords for $350 again I will pay the shipping. Fjords will always remain my favorite breed and I will stay a member of the NFHR, but shortly I will sign off from the Fjord line it is just too painful to read about all the fun you are having with your Fjordies. Re: Equine bloodwork
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thursday, August 16, 2007 7:50 pm Subject: Equine bloodwork To: fjordhorse@angus.mystery.com In horse medicine as in human medicine, we cannot treat to the numbers. A number "off" only means that it is out of the range that 95% of the animals tested to get that range were in. The combination of LDH and potassium being high- and that is really not high both point to a sampling problem - difficult draw, spun too long, sat longer than 1/2 hour before being spun rather than a disease. To make a diagnosis you look for patterns. Is the range reported to the vet on your report specific for Fjords? If not, interpretation of slightly off results must be made with caution. Give your vet, a break. I think a long time ago on this list we talked about hemoglobin and hematocrit levels in Fjords being slightly lower than the published standards for all horses. Mine are. Remember what horses were used to derive the normal range - were they throroughbreds or drafty type horses. Diagnoses and decisions to treat are usually made on a whole group of things including observation of the horse, signs and symptoms and combinations of tests. Lab tests are only a component of the whole process. Congrats on Fjord Purchases
This message is from: "Dave and Patti Walter" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Big Congrats to Sharon Larson on her purchase of FC Delino, aka Shorty for those at B.E. and heard me refer to him as that. He is a white dun Fjord gelding that I recently sold to Sharon. Delino is Sharon's new Fox Hunting buddy. Sharon and her husband do Fox Hunts and took Delino on several exercises and one offical hunt already. He is doing great and a wonderful match for Sharon. Sharon and her husband sure have fun and it's great exposure for the Fjord Breed to have a Fjord in the hunt! Another nice match went to Amy Kinosian on her purchase of Raspotnik's Ella. A 3 yr old filly. Amy was looking for a well behaved, quiet young Fjord to work and trail ride and drive. Ella is just that and a lOT more. I got 4 Fjords in from Ken Raspotnik to sell. Just loved the dispostion on all 4, PLUS the movement. Oh, soo nice! Was exciting to work with them. Hope to get more of his in the future. Taking 3 of the horses to a hunter/jumper show tomorrow(Friday). Sorry, only one Fjord. :-))) Patti Jo Walter www.franciscreekfjords.com The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw
