RE: switching hay
This message is from: "Gail Russell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Alfalfa is coarser than the hay you are feeding. Transition slowly to avoid possibility of impaction. The Strategy and Equine Senior amounts are pretty high. Especially since they both have significant amounts of sugar (in the form of molasses). I would cut them out entirely and go to a lite feed fed mostly as a vitamin and mineral supplement. You are unlikely to need extra calories because the alfalfa is likely higher calorie than the orchardgrass mix. If you do need calories, I would try something like wetted beet pulp, or something else. All of our vets recommend against feeds with molasses. My vet was suggesting we try pelleted feeds from Elk Grove Milling. http://www.elkgrovemilling.com/productline.html His Fort Dodge vaccine rep retired, and then discovered the company. Apparently the owner is absolutely passionate about quality (does things like drag you out to see the excellent hay he has found to make into pelletsand only buys hay that he has seen, sometimes flying hundreds of miles to view hay before buying). The rep was so impressed that she said she would help him with marketing. They have a barrel exchange program that saves the waste of the feedbags. Unfortunately, it looks like it may only be available in CA, AZ and NV. Seems to me you are in Washington? Gail The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw

RE: fjordhorse-digest V2008 #12
This message is from: Sandra Malm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi From Sandy in Minnesota, Do knee problems and Fjords somehow go together? I am aching in my knee as I write this, but want you to know that I bought a Fjord with that in mind. They are good at driving and being ridden, so I figure that my new guy should keep me in the horse barn for the rest of my life... Best to all of you wonderful people who own Fjords! switching hay
This message is from: "Melinda Schumacher" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi, I am getting a new batch of hay this week. Previously I had been feeding orchard grass/mixed grasses, 2nd&3rd cutting (if I remember correctly). The new hay coming is 75% alfalfa and 25% orchard grass. I won't be feeding fjords with this hay, but a mustang filly, a mini, and 2 dwarf goats. Besides mixing hays during the transition, are there any other concerns about switching to alfalfa? Will I need to decrease my grain (4 cups Strategy/day for the filly and 2 cups Equine Senior/day for the minithis is what their previous owners fed them). I appreciate your experienced advice, Melinda in Marengo (north central) OH where it's getting colder but not much snow. -- Coaching with Melinda Schumacher, MD Personal Empowerment through Creative Expression and Equine Experiential Learning "You wander from room to room hunting for the diamond necklace that is already around your neck." ~Jalal-Uddin Rumi "As she knotted the reins and took her stand, the horse's soul came into her hand, and up from the mouth that held the steel came an innermost word, half thought, half feel."~paraphrased, John Masefield Fly Without Wings www.flywithoutwings.net Gestalt Practitioner www.gestaltcleveland.org The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw
SS Gift
This message is from: Susan Cargill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I wanted to share with everyone the wonderful SS gift I received this year. And no, I'm not going to share her name because hopefully she'll be my secret santa next year. The gift was a sign for the barn with Felix's image on it. The image was absolutely perfect, anyone who knows Felix would recognize him immediately. A very big thank you to my secret santa.
