The large size fits both my big headed gelding and smaller headed mare.
We introduced the muzzle by putting in a few supplement cookies, and
starting out with 30 minutes of grazing in the muzzle for 3 days. We then
increased the time by 30 minutes every other day. Della has done fine and
quickly
mastered the art of grazing through the muzzle hole, but we keep the
pasture short. She spends 5 hours a day in the muzzle, and one hour of
free
grazing time. The rest of the time is in the dry lot. So far, Jostein and
Hanna are holding their weight with six hours of grazing time.

There is always a good bit of excitement when the grazing muzzle comes out
because they all know that there are cookies at the bottom (Joe learned
that he could reach into the tack room to grab the waiting muzzle while I was
putting on the girls' fly masks - now the muzzle is hung up and back until
fly masks are on).

Subject: What a wonderful weekend--

Just had to share with the digest what a wonderful Fjord and Fjord folks
weekend I had! I was privileged again to be navigator/groom for Marsha Korose
at the Elk Creek CDE in Fair Hill, MD. This is the 5th year, I believe, for
this no-frills CDE and it just keeps getting better.

We stayed with John and Martie Bolinski and trailered to the park each
morning. John and Martie are just the absolute best; gracious hosts, good
friends and just plain good company. John has volunteered at Elk Creek CDE
every year--goes wherever he's needed and handles whatever comes up with good
sense and good humor. He was awarded the first annual Katana Tiny
Rubenstein memorial trophy for the most valued volunteer--a lovely red camp
chair with arms, hand decorated with his name and the year and the name of the
award. So well deserved. It's great to see that kind of giving recognized.

Marsha drove HOG Solvar and LLF Ulend with the Norwegian harness to a Tidaholm
marathon wagon--got several compliments and a 9 on presentation. Her dressage
score of 53.13 was the best in her division! We were a little slow in cones
with one ball down.On Saturday, in the afternoon, several folks got rained
out--thunder lightning and downpour times 2 delayed dressage and cones for
many--we were fortunate to be done before it started but got caught out on the
marathon course and were never able to walk all of the obstacles (Did great
anyway--watched a few folks run the hazards we were unable to walk ourselves,
since we were among the last three out this afternoon). Section A was
perfect--the boys were forward, the course is beautiful, the weather was
cooperative and we were right in our time window. Their recovery after
sections D and E was excellent.

We ran all our hazards in well under a minute each--41-55 seconds--and came in
just over time for the marathon. We had an awesome time. Several people came
up to us and commented on the appearance and performance of the boys.
Several were amazed that we were driving a stallion and a gelding together and
that the stallion had perfect manners. (some folks had to check to be sure he
was intact). They did all of us proud.

I met Marcy Baer who was there as navigator for some friends with Dales
ponies, and Diane Singleton and John Herr stopped by with a friend to visit
and came back, bless them, to help us load up at the end! Missy (sorry, my
brain is fried and I can't pull up her last name) who has two Fjords in
training in North Carolina cheered us on all weekend. All in all it was a
glorious weekend. Curt brought the horses down on Thursday and came back
Sunday to pick them up and take them home, so it was just us girls at the
competition. There were folks there from as far away as New Hampshire and New
York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. We were the
only Fjords this year, but the CDE booklet had a picture of Maggie Sullivan
with her Fjord mare in the water hazard from previous year on the cover.

Bed sure looks good! I just may sleep in tomorrow :~). Sue Freivald
