selling saddles

2009-09-26 Thread laura fisher
This message is from: laura fisher

Hello out there-

I own an Albion Original Comfort dressage saddle that I want to sell. I have
looked on the internet and have seen that it has actually held its' price,
even a little more, but when I check some dressage used saddle sites they list
them around $950.00 and not the $1200.or more. This is because of the
"recession".

My problem is: how do I represent this saddle? I don't know how wide the
gullet is(do they have a gullet?- do I list the flaps the billets the wool
pading etc.etc. or do I just assume they know what An Albion Origi

I had a quarterhorse when I used it so I think it has a wide tree. But is the
gullet in front?Underneath?... I was wondering whether I could use a
measureing tape so someone would know all the dimensions and put the photos in
my ad. Would their knowing the dimendsions inable them to purchace the saddle
with confidence? The saddle is in great shape- just a tiny scrape on the front
edge(gullet?) I do not want to get into returns policy for such a heavy objec
espcially when I am not going to get top dollar for it. Has anyone gone
through this process? ...I waant to get it out there and get it on Ebay as
soon as I can because I need a saddle to fit my Fjord.

Thanks!

Laura and Here's my (sort of) happy topic ...poultry

2009-09-26 Thread laura fisher
This message is from: laura fisher

 Hi-

my husband bought two Muscovey ducks last winter. This is our first "farm".
Its not a farm, really just a house and some stalls and an indoor arena. (plus
53 acres) Anyway, his first big deal was to buy two Muscovey ducks. I
thought it was a great idea--never having seen a Muscovey duck. When he
brought two in a grain sack and let them out I couldn't believe how ugly they
were! They looked to me like vultures on ducky bodies.

There was a lot of chiding from not just me but any one that saw them. It was
only I who knew how truly this hurt my poor husbands' feelings... He REALLY
loved those ducks...

Well our pond is quite small and there is a plethora of raccoons . Now you
know the storys' sad endingbut- no- it wasnt

the raccoons after all it was the dog of the man who bales our hay! My
husband had to witness his beloved male Muscovery being wrung to death before
his very eyes!

My husband was depressed for many days. I felt terrible I had made such fun of
it. Only the female was left and she was dejected. She hid in the back of the
pond behind the reeds.-obviously deeply depressed...

A few days later we had to go to the grange for grain and what not, and while
we were there they had a couple of Blue Dutch baby ducks peeping . Terribly
excited my husband brought them home.

When we came down to feed the horses the next morning it was hard to believe,
but that Muscovey had taken them in as her very own. Her depression lifted and
she was in heavenSpeaking of heaven I hope the raccoons don't get them
this winter Any suggestions?

Some messages, that I KNEW were there would not come up...even if I refined

Now, only threads of message and chronological messages from March show up.

I looked up old messages from March on my machine, and some didn't appear in

I hope some of the archived material has not been lost.

i always had chickens on my farm, and when i rented at fieldstone. they
were terrific for keeping the fly population down, and fun to watch. they have
their own little society going, and it's like a soap opera. and i am sure i
have shared the story of the rooster who saw one of my horses in the midst
of pooping and was waiting for him to stop so he could forage through the
"remains." he stepped closer, the horse wasn't done, and the rooster got an
unexpected gift from above. it was hilarious.

Re: News from Beaver Dam Farm - Catching up

2009-09-26 Thread Beaver Dam Farm

This message is from: "Beaver Dam Farm"

Hello Everybody from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia -

Since I haven't posted in about 2 years, there's a lot of catching up to do.
But, don't worry. I'm not going to detail two years of news. -- Just from
last summer to tomorrow.

We had a wonderful summer with exciting things happening on the farm, and
lots of great guests, both business guests, plus friends and family.
Bob Giles, horseman/showman extraordinaire was with us for two months. --
Practcally before his huge rig stopped rolling, he was asking us if we'd
like to have a show while he was at the farm. -- In fact, Bob had two
shows in mind - one a demonstration open to the public, and the other a
mini CDE for his training clients and for me with BDF Quasar. -- The
Show/Demo happened on July 2nd, and it attracted over 100 people. -- Bob
had arrived with 2 Gypsy Vanner mares, plus his huge Percheron mare, Lexie,
and also FRF Barnikel (Gjest x Ruth- Myrstein) , the 4 yr. old gelding Bob's
been training and showing in CDEs. -- I had lined up some horses to come in
to train with Bob. There were 2 Cheval Canadians, 1 Irish Draught, and 2
Fjords.

We had a big group of interns for the summer, and Bob was soon organizing
them to appear in the show. One girl was a whiz at music and it was decided
that all our demos would be done to some really "up" jazzy music. -- For
instance, Bob did a tandem demo with the Gypsies and the music was "Take the
A Train" by Duke Ellington. Very fitting. --

Two girls rode two big geldings in a "pas de deux" to music of The Jackson
Five, "Rockin' Robin. -- Another girl jumped a gelding also to music. I
drove a dressage test with BDF Quasar (Gjest x Holly - Solar) to a Jacquel
Brel tune. The music was very masculine and fitted big, brawny Quasar.

The owners of the Gypsy Vanner mares, Bill and Debby Ricci were staying with
us, and both Bill and I got to stand in front of the crowd and talk about
our special breeds. -- That afternoon, Debby had gone to town and bought a
tub of lobsters, so after the show was over about 9 pm, we sat down to a
feast. -- Some local musicians came by, and one young man played the
spoons while his mother step danced. -- It was a colorful, musical, really
fun evening, and local people have been talking about it ever since. --
Two weeks after that, was Highland Games Week in our town of Antgonish. Bob
drove the pair of Gypsies, and I rode with him.

Bob is "Mr. Enthusiasm", and he loved driving all over our farm, and I do
mean "All Over". He took trails with the horses and carriage that I'd never
attempted. He admitted that some of them were a bit rough, so he fixed that
by hauling in gravel and manure and making the trails smooth and safe.
WE've always had wonderful trails and lots of them. Now we have even more.
The possiblities for training and conditioning have been greatly enhanced
thanks to Mr. Bob Giles and his years of experience in combiend driving. --
Every morning, Bob would go out with me and give me pointers on cones,
hazards and dressage. It was wonderful. -- Quasar proved himself again
and again. He was truly a delight to drive.

We are still welcoming horse people to VACATION at Beaver Dam Farm, but
we're doing some things differently. -- For 30 years, we've had nothing
but Fjordhorses at Beaver Dam Farm. So, this year with the black and white
horses, the dapple grey Percheron, the black Cheval Canadians, and the
chestnut Irish Draught, things looked different here. -- You wouldn't have
believed the reaction of our Fjords to the Gypsy Vanners. -- They were
well and truly spooked. -- They couldn't believe their eyes. -- However,
that passed, but it was not instantaneous. -- It took a week or so for the
Fjords to get used to these strange horses. However, they did.

This summer, people came to BDF, rented either the Carriage House Loft, or
the Charming Cottage. They came for a FAMILY FARM VACATION. It was much
more laid back than the more structured offerings we'd done for almost 20
years, and truly, I loved it, and enjoyed myself immensely. I did a little
teaching, but not on a daily basis. -- It all worked out really well, and
I even started going on trailrides with some of the guests, which I found I
loved, and have been an idiot not to have ridden in all these years.

Two of our grandchildren came to visit the farm from CA. Clayton is 14 and
loved riding on the Gator and the golf cart. He also rode with Bob and the
Gypsy Vanners. And, Bob taught Clayton defense moves learned from his years
as a Marine in Vietnam, and his 22 years as a police officer. -- Grace, 10
years old rides in CA, but as she said . . . "At my stable a trailride is to
leave the ring, ride to the big tree, and come back." Her dream was to go
on trailrides. I was nervous about that, but her dad gave us the go ahead.
Grace rode our 22 year old mare, Holly (Quasar's dam), and she also rode

Western saddle

2009-09-26 Thread julie finn
This message is from: julie finn

Timber Ridge Saddlery makes a draft saddle for fjords. They are very good to
work with. They helped me custom make my saddle. I use a double packing cinch
to prevent saddle slipping. They added rear cinch dees dropped from the tree
and used a double skirt for this purpose.

They use a draft saddle and shorten the bars for shorter backed horses,
shortened the fenders for my height, used a round skirt. I requested all
leather, which they warned me would add weight. I should have listened.
Anyway, shipping and the saddle was 600 $.

Used with a double packing cinch and a tack two pad the saddle does not slip.
I do not have to over cinch my horse. My mare seems to like it. The rear
latigo and cinch do interfer with leg cues. It is a compromise.

Draft horse show, organic manure engineers, Lisa's trip

2009-09-26 Thread Linda Lehnert
This message is from: Linda Lehnert

Thank you for posting about the draft horse show, Diana. It was very
interesting. Your Fjords are beautiful.

Corinne, I enjoyed your posting about the organic manure engineers (chickens)
and the other postings too on that topic. That's putting them to good use and,
as you pointed out, you get to eat the eggs. My Norwegian grandmother always
kept chickens so they could have fresh eggs, even in Dallas. We had some of
hers left when I was a small child. My mother always said chickens would eat
anything, including their own droppings.

Lisa, your trip report is very interesting, a fun read. You shared a little
bit of American history with your friend's sheep ranch visit and the old
buildings they have. It doesn't sound like the climate's too great there
though. I'm looking forward to part 3.
