Re: Digest
This message is from: Steve McIlree st...@carriagehorse.com For several days, I've been receiving individual messages instead of the daily digest. Please advise how to revert to receiving one email a day with all of the posts. I can't say for sure, but your message provides some hope. There has been a problem with the List server since last weekend. Hopefully, since your message made it through and since it hasn't yet arrived as a single message Digest, it is now OK. I've backed off bugging Gabe, who runs mystery.combecause I sympathize with his being hip-deep in alligators. Since your message has arrived, seemingly without problem, I'd encourage all to start using the List again and we will see what happens. -- Steve McIlree Owner/Administrator FjordHorse List Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f

This message is from: Gwenn Berard Beaupre redb...@sympatico.ca Hi Anthea - I hate to canter, at all, on any horse. My fjord mare broke into a couple steps of canter and we did the whole field, I hated to slow her down (although she was ready for it!). We'll call it training that we cantered as much as we did. The truth is that it was smooth, relaxing and exhilarating all at the same time. Her trot is pretty nice too. My gelding (her grandson) also has very, very smooth gaits that are ground-eating. ...Gwenn Subject: rideability I've had some horse people tell me that Fjords ride like a pony - very jarring. Ridability and conformation
This message is from: PHILLIP Odden n...@norskwoodworks.com This message is from Phillip Odden in Northwestern Wisconsin where it is snowing and the ground is now frozen. Anthea was wondering about finding a Fjord with nice gaits. This question falls into one of my great interests with fjord horses, Form and function. So in my experience the horse must have a nice free walk and a walk with a substantial over-stride. That is to say the back hoof should over-stride the front hoof when the horse is walking like it is wanting to go somewhere. Some of my horses will over-stride with six to eight inches between the front of the back hoof and the back of the front hoof. Next you want a horse that also has a good over-stride at the trot. Some fjords have big over strides at the trot. You might look at the length of pastern. Shorter pasterns usually means a stiffer ride. Longer pasterns make for a softer ride providing the pasterns are not too long and too soft. I also look for a horse with well developed hind quarters and a nice angle to the shoulder. One more thing to look at is the cannon bone to forearm ratio. I look for short cannon bone length. When you get all these things in one package provided the horse has a good mind and good work ethic you probably have a pretty good riding horse. The proof is in the pudding though. There are fjord horses that are quite athletic many that are not. An athletic fjord horse makes a good sport horse and a good riding horse. boarding
This message is from: brass-ring-f...@juno.com Hi Tish - you make me realize how lucky I am to have my 2 in the backyard. Although once this week I had to cut a dinner short because I was over an hour late to get them fed and stalled for the night (getting out of my comfort zone, they were probably fine). And it is hard to go to a movie in the evening, or to a party. But they are as clean as I like them, and fed on time. If there is mud or bad fences, it is my job (actually, my husband's) to do something about it before something bad happens. Always responsibility at every turn. Worth it though to look out and see them happy in the field. I think a lot of what we think they like is what we like. Like the radio thing. If I were in a barn I would hate the radio, but what if the horse liked country western? If you like it, you assume your horse will like it I think. I have one friend who had a nice situation except for the CW radio and her husband, a classical NPR type of guy, made her move them because he was sure it was driving their 2 horses crazy. Though they did not seem crazier than usual. My neighbor boards horses and I hear stories from her side. She runs her barn like I run mine, so I usually side with her. It can be very amusing. Re: Ridability
This message is from: Lois Anne Starr loisann...@gmail.com Regarding the ridability of Fjordies. As with any breed you will have individuals who differ in the smoothness of gait. Of my two, I prefer to ride Geier, who is very drafty in build. To look at him, you'd think he'd be hard to sit, yet he moves smoothly enough that I can sit for long periods to his trot. Lana who has a nicer build, I have to post to her trot, I really get a workout, since she is much more forward moving. She still moves nice, and others who ride her, thoroughly enjoy riding her without complaint. I know that there are many on the list who participate in dressage at the higher levels and their horses move very nicely too. Some find their Fjords move better under harness. Any other Listers with their opinions please post. Happy Holidays to All! Lois Anne, Gallant Geier, Silly Sunny and the Lovely Lana from Montana Tell me, and I'll probably forget. Evaluated Brood mare for sale
This message is from: Michele Noonan fjordl...@hotmail.com Hi all,, We are getting our first taste of winter here in Western Montana... BRRR We have decided to make some changes in our breeding program and want to give someone else an opportunity to use this wonderful mare in their program Two Rivers Kare is a 17 year old Brown dun mare.. She was evaluated in 2008 as a 16 year old and got a BLUE in conformation,, not bad for her age! She has had two foals for us,, one being a Red dun and this year a beautiful brown dun filly by Erlend. Her babies are big. She is on the drafty side with lots of bone. She has been trained to ride but would need a short tune-up if you decided to ride her again.. She went on a short trail ride this year and that was it. Mainly to pony the filly. She is healthy and ready to breed again this spring. This message is from: Gail Russell g...@zeliga.com I believe there are some lines of the sweet, draft Fjords that are born to bolt. I have no idea why, but I think it may be true. I saw a video recently of a Fjord for sale. The horse had a look in his eye that led me to believe that he was a born to bolt Fjord. I looked at the pedigree, and it had the bloodlines that I suspected. Not scientific, and I do not mean to malign Fjordsbut I thought it might create an interesting conversation to state my hypothesis. I looked at the pedigree, and it had the bloodlines that I suspected. Hmmm, I'm not sure that I want to start publicly dis-cussing such bloodlines, although I AM curious However, there are a couple of possibilities. Years ago, we bought a gelding, R, who we soon discovered had a bunch of behavioral quirks, the most distressing of which was bolting. Some time later, I had an extended e-conversation with the new owner of R's sire. Interestingly, for every quirk of R's that I mentioned, she had a similar story about his sire. Some aspects of their temperaments were clearly inherited (R never met his sire, and had been sold in-utero by the original stallion owner). A couple years after R's purchase, we bought a gelding, S, and while shopping, had also tried out his 3/4-brother, T (same sire; dams were mother/daughter; they were born 2 months apart, and spent the first 4 years of their lives together, as they moved thru 4 owners). T was bunchy, and clearly just barely holding things together (windy day, laundry flapping on the clothesline). Given my negative experiences with R, I asked the seller to head T so I could get off safely, and said no thanks. OTOH, S was Mr Steady Eddy---totally at ease with that windy situation, calmly doing what he was told. The most obvious difference between them was conformation. S had fairly good definition to his back and withers, which meant he could be comfortable in more types of saddles. T (like R!!!), was an oil drum with legs---very flat back, low withers, round barrel. Many saddles poke behind the shoulder blades on such conformation, and indeed, we had to get R a custom-made saddle (which did improve his rideability). Conformation can also be inherited, although clearly these two closely-related Fjords had gotten different pieces of their parents' conformation genes.
