Icy hooves
This message is from: Lois Anne Starr loisann...@gmail.com Hi Listers: For the first time I have had to deal with packed ice and snow accumulating in hooves this winter. I would welcome any and all suggestions about this. My crew is not shod. I was wondering once I get the ice balls out what have folks found to be the most effective in coating the soles with some kind of lubricant. Hoof flex wears off pretty quickly. How safe would WD-40 be to spray on? Since they are all walking around on rockers, would they be safer having access to the round bale 24/7 till it warms up, or would turning them out to pasture be okay? It sure looks uncomfortable standing unstable like that and seems like it would be hard on the joints. -- Lois Anne, Gallant Geier, Silly Sunny and the Lovely Lana from Montana Tell me, and I'll probably forget. gaits of horses
This message is from: Debby miss.am...@earthlink.net I get a newsletter from an upper level dressage rider, trainer and she speaks of gaits of horses, being different from breed to breed. Not expecting the working gait of a Haflinger to be the same as a 17.hand Hanoverian. It was mentioned earlier about how much overtrack. She mentions overstep at the walk by about a hoofprint, which is what I'd heard for years. She feels that one that overtracks by 10 to 12 inches or even more, could have problems later on in training. The regularity of the gait becoming lateral. I'm supposing this might be something my bigger guy does, he over reaches quite a bit and so tends to want to not step into his front hoof prints. Reminds me of dogs I see whose bag legs are carried to the side rather than directly behind the front feet. Anyway, she also mentioned the trot, the horse should step into the track made by the front feet and at the canter, the inside back leg steps well under the body, under the riders foot. Just thought I'd mention and start up a conversation of 1., rthym, 2, activitiy, and 3, footfalls. I know when I'd first read this, I used the 1.2.3.4., to count that the activity was the same at the walk, and then 1212, for the trot...haven't figured out the canter yet.
