RE: Still some judges behind the times!
This message is from: Karen McCarthy Anne, So sorry to hear about your experience...but you know what, it happens. I know how irritating this can be, but I know you and the boys will just keep rocking and putting in good, correct rides. The important thing is to know how well you did and be really happy about that because you can go crazy if you fixate on a bad call... I just shrug it off (now) and keep on showing; remember it's a totally subjective call in a show ring, and unfortunately you are at the judges mercy, no matter how radically goofy their calls are. If enough competitors complain about a particular judge though, management may just listen by not re-hiring said judge. At least you didn't have the problem I had at a all breed show here in Oregon a couple of years ago: I was showing in open classes with 2 other fjords (and a few haffies, welsh & qtr horses) and my mare was pretty good for me, but we kept placing pretty low. After the 3rd or 4th class, I finally approached the judge after the class and asked her (in a nice way) what I might do to improve our rides. Well, she said we needed to show more forward movement, we were too slow and we never seemed to get our leads..."what!" I said to her in disbelief, "if anything I thought my mare was a bit too forward, and we did manage to get all our leads", whereupon she got a funny look on her face (um, qtr. Horse blindness?!) and admitted outright that she must of had me confused with the 2 other fjord entries! Yikes, gotta say our placing drastically improved after that. Just goes to show you that judges are human and unfortunately this one sort of subscibed to the "all fjords look alike" rule. Guess we opened her "eyes" ;~() Anne, maybe you might think about showing in more performance based disciplines like reining, dressage and CDE...don't you think Torje and Jan will be awesome as a pair someday? It's in their genes - their papa was a driving machine! Karen in sunny but extremely windy central Oregon..getting ready to head up to Happ's next week to help out @ the show and assist Jacquelyn Leuener (travelling up from Nevada tomorrow!) with her 2 horses. > From: ncfjo...@aol.com > Date: Sat, 3 Jul 2010 21:56:01 -0400 > Subject: Still some judges behind the times! > To: fjordhorse@angus.mystery.com > > This message is from: ncfjo...@aol.com > > > Hello to the list! judges
This message is from: bbd...@aol.com I agree, Marymost judges are open-minded about breeds. I showed my Fjord last year in a conformation class against 20-plus paints and quarter horseson a dare and for a laugh. We placed 2nd and I'm sure we would have been first if there wasn't potential for a riot amongst the QH breeders! The judge later came up to me and thanked me profusely for bringing my two Fjords. I wish all judges were so open-minded. bits
This message is from: bbd...@aol.com Hi I guess I'm out of lurkdom after all these years...it's just too hot (and I'm a bit older) to work outdoors this summer. After amassing a huge collection of bits over the years, some quite expensive, my 5 1/2 inch bit size Fjord decided he likes this bit best of all. It is a Korsteel flexi-bit mullen mouth flavoured 3-ring Dutch gag.blue. I think they are being discontinued and can be found for a ridiculously inexpensive price...I paid about 25. for this. The similar happy mouth bits are too thick and unyielding. I use this bit for trail riding now and my Stine Gutten is happy and so relaxed. I only wish they made a 6" for my Thor. judges
This message is from: bbd...@aol.com Hello Anne When I first moved to Florida, my big Fjord Thor and I competed in a "non-thoroughbred" hunter division. There were three of us...the other two looked like TBs to me! The other two refused fences, wrong leads, etcwe had beautiful clear rounds! We came in third...I just smiled because my Fjord won over the crowd and gave people one of their first glimpses of Fjord versatility. When I politely asked the judge "why?" she replied "He just isn't the hunter type that we are looking for". Never bothered with hunter classes again!
