There is a product called Ration Plus which I have used with great success:

Ration Plus Restores the digestive system to proper balance. Supplies
Lactobacillus acidophilus, a natural prebiotic, to the digestive system where it
provides vital nutrients to the beneficial bacteria found there. This helps to
establish a healthy balance of digestive microflora. As balance is restored,
your
horse can better utilize his feed, leading to a multitude of health benefits,
including weight gain, reduction of stomach upsets and diarrhea, reduction of
low-grade ulcers and colic, reduction of hay belly, increased stamina and
improved hoof, skin and coat quality. Each bottle is approximately an 80 day
supply.

A bottle cost about $27, KV vet, Vally vet, etc.

Have any of you with this problem tried probiotics on your horses? My trainer
swears by them and we have used them for our dogs in different situations.
 You can
read all about them at www.healthyhorses.ca
According to my trainer, loose stools, unless they are from worms, are almost
always a sign of insufficient digestive microbes in the gut. easy solution.
repopulate the gut with beneficial microbes. Check it out at

Re: sale of horses, Private Treaty

 what the heck does Private
 Treaty mean.

I missed the original post. Private Treaty is not at all an uncommon
practice in the horse market.
It simply means that the 'seller' and 'purchaser' will work out the details
between themselves
and not publish them. (just as with selling a house, or car, or..)

This practice is especially common when a breeding horse is sold as there will
often be a contract
drafted along with the sale, representing both parties. It might include some
restrictions, eg:
number of times the horse may reproductively be used, kinds of mates not used,
etc. It might
include some stipulation for the offspring, require their registration,
or maybe a buy-back clause if transferred, etc.

It allows for dicker space with a party of your choice, rather than a flat
price for one and all..
as you might not want to sell to one John Doe.

There are unlimited possibilities for crafting a deal in favor of the horse.

Dont claim to be smarter than Fred, but I did go looking on Google. Here's
what it says at

http://horses.about.com/od/glossaryofhorsetermsp/g/privatetreaty.htm

Definition: A private treaty is an agreement or contract between a buyer and a
seller or between a stallion and a mare owner. The agreement is made directly
between the parties involved.
Breeders or sellers may wish to use a private treaty when they offer different
terms for different situations. For example, a breeder may offer their
stallion's services to purebreds, part-breds orgrade mares, or mares of a
specific type or bloodline at different rates. This allows the stallion owner
some control over the type of mares they will breed their stallion too. Mares
that they favor may be serviced at a lower cost to the mare owner, than those
they consider a less desirable match for their stallion.

I guess the partbred and grade mare stuff doesn't apply to fjords, but you get
the idea.
Different terms for different situations.

My answer is only a guess: Private Treaty...asking and selling price
 not revealed??
Now, somebody smarter than I am: answer the question...

I came in a bit late to the conversation here but I was wondering if you
have
talked w/ you vet about gastric ulcers? They are so much more common than
you
would think. I have a TB mare I am caring for that I rescued in November
who
had them. It was pretty easy to diagnose w/ her as she presented the full
repetoire of symptoms w/o hesitation, unlike our more stoic Fjords. We
started
out by giving her Ulcer Gard paste (at a discounted rate of $28 a tube!!)
The
active ingredient is Omprazole (active ingredient in Prilosec for human
ulcers
) and then 2 weeks into treatment we switched to a product that was donated
to
us by the manufacturer, Ulcer Cure OTC which has the same % of Omprazole
as
Ulcergard, but comes in powder form. A one month supply is $150. The only
caveat is that you must store it at the correct temp, close to 77°, as the
Omprazole is fairly unstable. http://ulcercureotc.com/Hope this helps,

Debbie, The horse that has the ulcers here on our farm is a thoroughbred. She
was found severely injured next to the highway that bisects the upper part of
our farm. Due to the meds she was on for the injuries and her body score of 2,
plus her rough coat, she also ground her teeth a bit, didn't clean up all her
food (or is a really slow, picky eater) and she had some colic like symptoms.
As soon as we got her going on the ulcer gard she started improving. I put her
on it Nov 14th and a week ago we were all out of ulcer meds. So far, so
good...I hope.I know Fjords are quite a bit different and their stoic natures
can often conceal what we take as symptoms in another breed of horse.Karen

RE: Fjord Relo Help Wanted

Hi All,Well, I drove down to San Antonio area Saturday and have been staying
with family here. The weather has been lovely (as compared to southern kansas)
but the locals keep commenting that it is cool or cold, or chilly. It's been
close if not 60 degrees down here. Oh to suffer so in winter :) LOL I have
found the rocky geological issue to be a bummer as I also like to garden and I
can imagine the hassles there and also the issues when trying to set fence
posts. For those unfamiliar, there are areas where the rock is right up to the
surface if not just beneat a few inches of dirt here - very common in this
swath where I am now. It means they don't have basements, they have flash
flood/runoff issues and the gardening/fence post, etc type issues. I am headed
to the Waco area to stay over with a friend for a day or so, probably around
Wednesday. I'm told it isn't as rocky up there (about 3 hrs north roughly) and
it shouldn't be too much colder overall, maybe 5-10 degrees depending on
elevation and such. I'm considering a trip to Phoenix to see family there
next, but I do think I'd miss the green grass eventually. I know they irrigate
some and they can water for yards/lawns, but I just love the sight of a vast
green pasture rolling along as far as the eye can see... maybe I have to
suffer more winter to have that, dunno. Wichita is looking better and better
some days, ha ha. Cheers,Stephanie
