Where does one attach bells to the harness - bells referred to are the long type that buckles around the horse. Should they be in front of the saddle or behind? Or where? Behind. As far as I remember. :o) Anne Berit Nyland - Norway
Re: white Fjords
This message is from: Anne Berit Nyland [EMAIL PROTECTED] Maybe I'm a bit on the picky side, but isn't there the factor of 'lethal white'? Arabs, T-breds, Paints, sometimes Appys all have it, is this what we want? The foal is born, but dies from an autoimmune problem. Those who know, fill us in. Two white duns give 25% white foals with white eyes, two yellow duns as well (the yellow ones give 50% yellow and 25% red dun too). But I've never heard that it's lethal. Anne Berit Nyland - Norway

This message is from: Anne Berit Nyland [EMAIL PROTECTED] This message is from: Steve McIlree [EMAIL PROTECTED] That would be Solveig who I believe is 16.1hh. She is a really beautiful horse to see in action. Do you breed on horses that big? They are not a typical fjord at all actually, not with that size. Anne Berit - Norway

A very, very, very big fjord?
This message is from: Anne Berit Nyland [EMAIL PROTECTED] I've just heard that a very big fjord are living somewhere in my town. He's told to be 5'1 (is that the right way to write it???) or 162 cm tall! It sounds absoulutely insane to me and my first thought are theese: 1. He is not a pure fjord 2. He has been given too much and wrong food as a young horse and have grown way to big because of that or 3. He has a hormonal disease or something. Of course I have to find out more about this horse and hopefully I can see him too, but I was just curios - have anyone else heard about fjords that big??? Anne Berit Nyland - Norway

It was very hard to find in Norway and we brought two back with us. To make it fair we decided to sell the one on Ebay. No way! That book is no problem to find in Norway, I got a copy myself a few months ago in a ordinary bookstore! Ordered it by the internet and had it my mailbox in a few days. I payed ap.10$ + postage. SV: Speculation
This message is from: Anne Berit Nyland [EMAIL PROTECTED] Been thinking about origin of the name Fjordhorse. Could be once horse of the Fjords? Shortened to Fjordhorse? Norwegian Fjordhorse: First country to originate a stud book and planned parenthood? Yes. The horse is a norwegian breed, it's origin is in western Norway and there's lots of fjords there - therefore the name Fjordhorse. Or Westlandhorse or Fjording. :o) Then all the other countries came into the picture. So now, is fjordhorse a general term/name? Yes, on this particular breed. We had a Swedish Fjordhorse, a Danish Fjordhorse and 2 Canadian Fjordhorses. Eventually an American/North American Fjordhorse. Get my meaning? That is, prefix denoting country of birth, but all are Fjordhorses. Does this make any sense to anyone? You're perfectly right. It's just the same with the fjord as with the warmblood - Norwegian warmblood, American wb, Dutch wb and so on. But the fjord is a Norwegian breed! Almost all fjords that are living today, no matter what country they live in, can be traced back to the fjord stallion Njaal 166. :o) Anne Berit

This message is from: Anne Berit Nyland [EMAIL PROTECTED] My skepticism has been the result of the education that Anneli and others living and studying in Scandinavia have given us through their participation on the list. I would like to hear from you what documentation you has concerning the long-time selective breeding of Fjords as well as the use of Fjords by the Vikings. The first fjord stud-book is ap. 100 years old, but the first horse-exhibition in Norway was in 1859, but they had been breeding pure fjords for a long time then. But there was lots of breedcrossing as well! And in the 1860s the Norwegian gouvernment ordered that doelehorses (the ancestors to todays norwegian coldblood) should be used to breed with fjord mares. What a nightmare! Fortunately some of the pesants didn't do this and pretty much _one_ stallion, Njaal 166, actually saved the fjordbreed from beeing extirpated! The vikings did have other horses that fjords, they brought small ponys to Iceland and as far as I know there's no genetic mach between fjords and icelandic ponies. At least I read that once... We have another ponybreed in Norway too, the Nordlandshest or Lyngshest. It looks quite much like the icelandic pony, but has a slightly smaller and lighter head, a few of them can pass and/or tolt, but most of them only do walk, trot og gallop. Anne Berit - Norway (and not too good in english, but I hope you got my point :o) )

This message is from: Anne Berit Nyland [EMAIL PROTECTED] I just uploaded several picture of Sarah Drew's new foal, Stjarna, out of KeJaKo's Eneste, by Snowy's Cosmo. 2 days old. Sweet! But why the name Stjarna? It means Star and are usually used on horses with a star Or the right spelling in Norwegian would be Stjerna. Anne Berit
SV: Viking Horse Names
This message is from: Anne Berit Nyland [EMAIL PROTECTED] Does anyone know of the name of a real horse from that period of time, and where I may document it? You could use the name Sleipner, he was the horse of the god Odin. He had 8 feet and was the fastest horse ever. :o) I think he should be a fjord, but I'm not sure. I don't think there is many known viking-fjords actually, but why not use the name from one of the big fjordstallions from the time the fjord-breeding started here in Norway? Njaal is the stallion that actually saved the fjords from beeing extirpated in the years 1900 - 1910. Anne Berit

What do a fjord cost?
This message is from: Anne Berit Nyland [EMAIL PROTECTED] I've been surfing the net and seen several fjord-pages and one thing surprises me much - what you pay for a fjord! Is it normal to pay ap. 5000,- $ for an average fjord? In Norway you'll get an average fjord for ap. 1500 - 2000 $ I even saw fjords adverticed for 6800,- $!!! That was a mare, looking quite ordinary and they didn't say anything about what she had done or if she'd had foals that had done anything special. Please be patient with my english, I'm Norwegian and not an expert in english. :o) Anne Berit
SV: Norwegian book on Horse Drawn Carriages
This message is from: Anne Berit Nyland [EMAIL PROTECTED] Now the problem: There was an invoice with the book..Aaahh, It wasn't free after all! The cost is NKr448, + postage NKr75, = NKr523, Which I found out was about $60 in US dollars. And I am supposed to pay to a certain bank in Norway. How do I do this? Take the invoice and go to your local bank, they'll help you with it. At least that was what I did when I bought a book about fjord from Carol Rivoire, Nova Scotia (and she even autographed the book for me!). It may cost some extra to send the mony to Norway.
