I am only talking about instate horses. I have been showing in Washington for many years and do not know anyone who has had a problem or spread of this disease at any shows that I have attended. Maybe we should all be required to have a human health certificate . I see more sick people spreading health problems than horses. Introducing me
This message is from: "Mary Anne Cramer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi! I'm Mary Anne Cramer and I have been the happy owner of Samson, a six y.o. red dun gelding since May of 98. I was introduced to him and the Fjord breed by Jane Sawyer of Swannanoa, NC, who with her husband Harlan, owns and manages Long Branch Fjords. I was a 4-H'er with a Welsh pony/thorougbred cross as a kid, and as a 40 something adult who wanted to own a horse again I was first drawn to the gentleness and intelligence of Fjords. (I have to admit they first looked a little funny and chunky.) Now, of course, other horses look different and Samson is the most beautiful horse in the world. Samson had done some work under saddle when I got him, but I did want to try training my own horse. I rode hunt seat as a kid, and that's the tack I'm using now, but have tried him in a western saddle and Australian stock saddle. I am content to proceed slowly and enjoy every step along the way, plus I ask alot of questions. We have done very well with ground work, and under saddle have been working at the walk and trot. I also bought harness from Dave McWethy at Equitana this June and have started some ground driving. I would like to train him in a work harness as well for plowing and other light farm work. but as I said I'm in no rush, and on some days I'm happy just to groom him and spend time together. I first got on the Digest about a week ago and actually have some questions. >From the standpoint of Fjord conformation, does early work under saddle need to emphasize bending and softening in the neck and also developing flexibility in the barrel? I work on circles and figure 8's a fair amount. Do they need special attention to lightening the forequarters and developing the rear? I've been working some on hills for that. Two difficulties I've had with Samson are 1) He's kind of pokey; I have to use alot of leg to maintain a good trot, or sometimes just to get him to move on at a walk from a halt. I do use a crop to reinforce, and try to be consistent, giving him 3 to 4 squeeze-kicks before using the crop. How can I get him to respond to less cue? 2) I've had two bad incidents riding him in the field where he has seemed to get very nervous and then run off to get near the field where his buddies are. I've ended up on the ground both times. He's never done this if I'm riding with someone else. Now, if I'm by myself, I ride him in the field with his buddies (which I've been told is dangerous), but he stays calm, and each time I do try to take him a little further away and even out of sight. Any ideas? I do feel I'm at the point where I need to get a trainer involved to keep us progressing. Hope this hasn't been too long.
