Hello List,

I truly agree with Karen's post. This is a tough time for so many. Layoffs
are so hard to deal with -- emotionally and financially. Reaching out in
simple ways ( The Giving Cycle - a time to give and a time to take - as a
family member once said) is so important right now. Taking stock in what we
have in our lives can be so helpful for the heart. My husband and I have
walked that path (layoffs and depression) and it shook us to the core.
Holding onto horses while going through either can be a huge challenge!

Talking about it with others who care can be powerful medicine. My best to
those who are struggling with these issues right now!

ello List,
t grieved me to read about Rose's husband out of work for over 18 months
er ensuing depression, and Debbie's sister facing the loss of her house, and
er other one missing. I am not a stranger to that pain.
his grim news affirmed that Dave, (my partner) and I are not alone, as we are
he beneficiaries of some daunting economic problems of our own right now, and
e're trying to face them head on. It sounds weird, but the loss of my job has
llowed me to really dig in and give our problems 100% attention.
ne thing I have learned throughout our ordeal with our bank, is that we are
efinitely not alone, not by a long shot. Here's a little test to prove it:
og onto Google Maps. Type in your town state. After the map loads, look for
he 5 tabs in the upper right. On the 'Other' tab, select the bottom entry
rom the drop-down list, 'Real Estate'. A toolbar will open on the left side
f the screen and in the 'Listing type', select the last box 'Foreclosure'.
oila, a pox of red dots on our land! Kinda takes your breath away, doesn't
t? It should at least give you pause... In our small town of just under 7,000
ouls and dropping, many, many people have moved away as they have been
oreclosed upon. 2 doctors and the county librarian. 15% unemployment. This
conomic malaise is just throwing it's net over so many communities.
I'll try not to proselytize too much here, but I just wanted to say that the
ore we are able to share our stories, the less alone powerless we will
eel, and in that we can gain strength to overcome and if needed, accept the
oss and pain minus the embarrassment and humiliation..
mong family and friends who have reached out, are some great Fjord friends
hat have been really supportive and helped me rally when I have not felt like
ell, rallying. Gail Russell, who over the past few days has been a real
riend and ally is helping me navigate a lot of legal mumbo-jumbo. I would
eally like to thank her, and also Jacquelyn Leuener, my biggest personal
heerleader there ever was. Both are part of this List community and without
hem, I don't think I could have made it this far.
o if there are others out there in the same boat, don't feel like the Lone
anger.
ou are not alone.
ere's to a Happier Year (for sure!)

HI Phil,

I adored this note and the creative thoughts behind it. What a special offer
and I would love to see mapel syrup being harvested and take a drive in one of
your sleighs. Maybe next year if you would take a snow check from this still
working in the classroom, blue collar worker who saves for moments like that.

It was a pleasure to meet you both at Iron Horse! Jim and I both love trees
-- that is Jim's PhD topic of study so it would be so special to come your
way.

Let us know. We are sincere!!

Sleigh and Cutter Driving Opportunity

This message is from Phillip Odden in Northwestern Wisconsin where soft flakes
of snow are falling on a crusty 5 inch base of snow. In the next couple days I
will haul out my sleighs for the winter season. I maintain sleigh trails from
December to maple syrup season in late March here on our farm. I use the
trails to train my young Norwegian Fjord Horses and to keep my experienced
Fjord horses in good condition. I drive singles and pairs but I prefer pairs.

This winter Else and I are offering two opportunities for someone to drive our
experienced horses and sleighs at a sleigh and cutter rally. First the 2011
Ashland Sleigh and Cutter Rally in Ashland, Wisconsin on January 8. The second
opportunity to drive will be the CAA winter Sleigh and Cutter Festival during
the 125th annual St Paul winter carnival January 28 and 29, 2011.

If you have always wanted an opportunity to drive in a colorful sleigh and
cutter rally here is your chance. The packages include the use of our horses
and equipment, a couple days of driving lessons on the trails or in our indoor
arena, a tour of our artist studios and the hospitality of our traditional
Norwegian home. For further details and prices please contact me by private
email.

If it has to be winter it might as well snow. I can almost hear the sleigh
bells now.

Phillip Odden

This message is from Phillip Odden in Northwestern Wisconsin where summer is
beginning to move towards fall.

Well over a year ago I became aware that we were being considered by the
American Driving Society to demonstrate at the World Equestrian Games to be
held this fall in Lexington Kentucky. They wanted me to drive my pair of
Fjords in a Driving Derby and for a Pleasure Driving demonstration called
Pleasure Driving 101. This spring we were encouraged to get our horses
qualified with the extensive Veterinary requirements of the WEG. Information
has been painfully slow in coming regarding times and venues for our
demonstration. Finally we were told to submit applications for Homeland
Security so we would be allowed to enter the Equine Village. It turns out that
security will be very tight for the event with lots of people from foreign
countries in attendance.

Recently we received information regarding the venues and times for the
Driving Derby demonstration. The driving derby will consist of two hazards
located at opposite ends of the driving arena. The competitor will drive into
the arena and race down to the far end and drive through several gates in
order as fast as he can, then race down to the other end to do that hazard,
return to the far end and do that hazard again then return to the near end to
complete two goes at each hazard and then finish. Howard Fiedler will be
navigating for me to help keep the dusty side down on our marathon carriage.

As of now, the schedule is :

Sunday, October 3 demo at 6:00 p.m.

Monday, October 4 demo at 2:00 p.m.

Tuesday, October 5 demo at 4:30 p.m.

Weds, October 6 demo at 10:00 am

These demos will take place at the Equine Village large arena.

At this point, our participants are :

Phil Odden, with a pair of Fjords
Mary Ruth Marks with a single horse
Meghan Benge with a pair of ponies
Randy Cadwell with a pair of ponies
Melissa Boyd with a single horse
Jeff Morse with a single horse

I still do not have the information for the Pleasure Driving demonstrations,
though I just contacted Andy Marcoux this morning and he indicated that he is
still planning to do the demonstrations but does not know when or where it
will take place. I will post that information when I receive it for those who
plan to attend the WEG. My understanding is that there are still rooms
available and tickets available to attend the WEG. This is the first time this
event has been held in North America to my understanding and it is truly a
World Class event. Quite possibly ours will be the only Fjords there. You can
bet we will have them polished and trimmed as best we can.

Looking forward to the World Equestrian Games,

Phil Odden
