I spoke to Ann Stifel yesterday to offer my condolences on the death of
Holunder. She was suprised to hear that I knew about it. I explained that it
had been reported on the Fjord List on the internet and that many people
responded to the news offerring sympathy and support, she was very touched.
Since Ann is not on-line it would be lovely to give her a call or write a
note. She is very sad about Holunder as is her husband as Holunder was his
favorite. They were both very happy to have had him for the time they did and
speak glowingly of his presence and character. I am sure that his final years
were quality ones. Vivian Creigh

I have lost horses before, but never found it as hard as when I lost my
Fjord, Howdy. I cried for three months and I am a strong old lady. ( I am
also not letting the vets forget either) Pardon me Steve and Brian, no
reference to functioning vets. But is it the connection to our fjords?? Is
it the friendliness? Is it an unknown emotion or instinct? Whatever, I feel
very sorry for Holunders's owners and for his suffering. Even the word
evokes a tightening of the throat. Jean

That is so sad!! I was looking at a picture of him just a few days ago
(page 21 winter of 98 in the Herald) and wishing him well. Thanks for
telling us. What a hard thing to bear. Ruthie

Hello fellow Fjord lovers,

About a month ago I wrote to let you know that Ann and David Stifel's
stallion at Purton Farms, Holunder, had been injured and had undergone
surgery for large rip in his flank possibly entering the abdomen. He
developed complications after surgery, including laminitis, which seemed
to be improving and he came home to Virginia from NC State. He then
developed severe colic, possibly due to adhesions or abscesses, and it
was decided not to put him through another long ride, long surgery and
the possibility of more complications that he would probably not survive
in his weakened state. His passing was about 2 weeks ago.
