According to Jeanette Gower, in her book "Horse Colour Explained", under the
heading Red Dun, "There are several types of red dun, all named as a result
of a darker or lighter chestnut base colour. These are listed in the shaded
chart above." Then her chart shows the shades of red dun (lightest to
darkest)
Light red dun (peach dun)
Apricot dun
Red dun
Copper dun
Bronze dun
Liver dun (muddy dun)
So, yes, a Fjord could be considered an apricot or peach dun, but the Fjord
standard would only refer to it as a red dun, no matter where in the color
spectrum the base chestnut falls.
I have two red duns, and although their coat color is nearly identical,
there is a definite difference in stripe color in the mane. The gelding has
a barely discernible creamy stripe (perhaps his chestnut base is a sorrel,
red with flaxen mane and tail?). The mare has a slightly darker mask and a
medium colored stripe through her mane (my guess is base color is standard
chestnut with chestnut mane and tail).
Cheers!
Karen
