Possibly the presence of 'dreads' in a horse's tail has more to do with the type of tail hair the horse has, than necessarily with one certain bloodline. I have had at least two horses that had 'dreadlock tails' - they were not related to each other in any way, nor were either of them related to Grabb. Their tail hair was simply finer - or softer - than the tail hair on my other Fjords. It seems that Fjords with coarse tail hair - no matter how MUCH of it there is - don't tend toward 'dreads' or ringlets of any kind. Their tails have problems of their own however - when they DO get tangled they are harder to comb out due to all the weight and the tendency of coarser hair to stick together. One of the horses I had with 'dreads' in his tail was a 'curlier' Fjord than most - he retains his slightly wavy forelock and tail, plus curly body hair, to this day. Maybe those Fjords with a tendency towards curly manes and tails have softer hair in their tails thus encouraging ringlets and 'dreads'? This message is from: Michele Bigelow [EMAIL PROTECTED] Both Sigrid (Grabb daughter) and Stovar (Grabb grandson) have the dreadlock type tail. Interesting to think it was an inherited trait? Anyone else with Grabb offspring notice this? Michele
Dreadlocks in the Tail
This message is from: Cheryl Beillard [EMAIL PROTECTED] I should have read the complete set of messages before I responded to the first one on fjord tails .. Jean, you're right, my mare tail sort of bunches up in spirals, maybe this is an inherited trait from Grabb? the others don't have it (yet?). ps. Carol's message on early training and constant handling/training is an excellent reminder for those of us who get a little slack and don't always work with our horses on a daily basis, trusting they'll remember what lessons they've learned. Having witnessed a certain over abundance of high spirits in my 6 month old Felix filly lately, I shall bear this in mind and make sure I don't forget with her .. despite the cold, which is my only excuse! Right on, Carol!
