Re: Holding Interest of the Crowd
This message is from: "Beth & Sandy - Starfire Farm" I'll be interested to see if this reply makes it to the list... You could do a driving/jumping routine like we did for Stock Show and our Expo. Make a jump on wheels, attach it to the back of a carriage and do a routine with ridden Fjords jumping the jump. We found, to be safe, that the carriage needed to stop so the ridden horses could jump safely, but the pattern can be smple with one rider leading the entire pattern, so less room for confusion. Our jump was a low, sturdy cross rail attached to the carriage with quick release shackles. Something for riders and drivers! ;-) Beth -- Original Message -- Received: 07:14 AM MDT, 07/29/2013 From: Therine Gudknecht To: "fjordhorse@angus.mystery.com" Subject: Holding Interest of the Crowd This message is from: Therine Gudknecht Hi All, We attended a fantastic draft horse show yesterday in Jordan, Minnesota. There were 17 six horse hitches and 14 eight horse hitches. These are some of the top hitches in the country and it was awesome to see them all line up in the ring at the same time for placing in their class. Because it was a point show, the judge had to place all 17 six horse hitches. These big hitches are the first ones of each show day. So when they are finished, it takes quite a while to break down the large hitches and get ready for the next class. During that time, a lot of the crowd leaves and the show people are looking for a way to keep the crowd interested. We were asked if we would have any ideas of something that the Fjords could do during that time to keep the crowd there. Anyone have any suggestions or want to do anything with their Fjords during that time next year? RE: Holding Interest of the Crowd
This message is from: "Curtis" Hi, As a draft horse show manager, I can tell you that it is hard to hold the crowd's attention after 6 and 8 horse hitch classes. Normally, a show puts these classes at the end of an arena's session in order to build or keep the crowd, just before lunch or the end of the day. If the show has several of the big hitch classes each day, then they spread them out to keep the crowd watching and spread out the work for the crews. To answer your question, there are several things you can do. I can tell you from years of entertaining at expos and demos that you need something that is fast paced, and different or difficult for the normal driver or rider to do. The most popular act is a ridden or driven drill team set to music. The problem with drill teams is that the act can be boring after a couple minutes, so you have to come up with a real active and difficult pattern. Unless your team practices to the nth degree, there is a great chance that the pattern will not work or you will have accidents. Another option that works well with crowds is a driving derby/race or barrels. For a driving derby, we set up one or two portable obstacles like you find at an ADT or CDE. With fast tempo music, each driver goes through each obstacle in the proper route as fast as possible. The time can be announced after each driver. For each performance at our last expo, we had the crowd clapping with the music and cheering on their favorite driver. In this case, the favorite driver was an Amish gentleman riding a stone boat at the canter. Unusual for a driving derby, but it worked. Take care! Curt Mathias, WV http://www.deepcreekfarm.com/ PS. I the official parade committee announcement that there will be Fjords in the Rose Bowl Parade on New Year's Day!
