Log Pull-Single & Pairs

  Dear List from Brian Jensen;
Taffy---try Lynne Millers Training Workhorses--Training
Teamsters. Pages 323-324-325 should answer all your questions. Pictures of
hitching--pulling--serpentines, and a written narrative to support the
procedure. Information for single and pairs ground work.
Ursula and I have been to many shows around N.A. and usually
there are small differences in the classes reflecting the area or the
understandings of the local teamsters. Several years ago we travelled a
small local circuit with other teamsters competing. Logs were usually in the
12 foot length area give or take wherever they happened to be cut.A single
log was used for a single, and two logs for a team. However the important
factor was the ratio used. What ever the length of the log became the
distance between the cones as well as the distance from the cones to the
outside barrier lines. We usually practice a little tighter than that just
to get ready for a class.
In areas where the competition was especially good organizers
added a one foot---two footthree foot pull after the serpentine was
completed. Every inch off the stated length became a penalty to the teamster
and was factored into the overall time.
I highly recommend the Miller book. It can be acquired through
Small Farmers Journal---Box 1627---Sisters--Oregon 97759.

To me the log pull is one of the most exciting events at Libby. I remember
one year at Libby being absolutely mezmerized with watching Brian Jensen
and Sambar working through the cones. Such a rare level of communication
and finesse of team work between man and horse was a fine and wonderous
thing to see.

Hello Laura,

It sounds like Mr. Mcwethy is pretty sure of himself. I just came up with
a terrific idea. We should pair Felix and Hostar the two studs together
and show David and his two VERY OLD mares how the log pull should be done.
Pat.

Pat - what's to practice? Signe knows how to do it. She's been doing it
since before Felix was in diapers.
