MN Expo - A Brief Report

What a great representation of our wonderful horses at the MN Expo this
year! Our horses were groomed, well-behaved, and there was great variety
for the public to enjoy (red dun, grey dun, brown dun, sporty models and
drafy styles). And amazingly the weather cooperated for once - no rain, and
pleasant spring temps really brought out the crowds.

Kristin, June, Heike, Jessica and Rob rode English, with Kristin doing some
lovely lateral work and turns on the haunches, Heike getting off her
gelding to have him take a bow (a real crowd pleaser, she was applauded for
that effort every time!), and June jumping. Jessica rode Heike's Angie and
did a great job on a horse she had just met, and Rob showed great dressage
form on his lovely gelding. We had the Lusty's driving the ever-reliable
Marla, and Phil and Else with their pair of red boys hooked to a marathon
vehicle, showing off some lovely bending and precision. Mary and Tess were
in full buckaroo regalia, proudly representing the draftier style of our
breed.

When the group left the colliseum and turned down the street en masse, they
really turned heads as a group. Every horse breed at the Expo is touted as
the family horse, the versatile horse, the kind and well behaved; ours
really are!

i have a bunch of photos we took at the minnesota horse expo, nothing fancy,
but some nice images of what we looked like. i am the one in the teal and
orange western shirt. as i look at these i noticed that oz still looks like a
fuzzy mammoth compared to everyone else. i guess we live farther north.

the foal was 10 days old, fathered by heike's stallion, thor, and mom is
lillyhammer. cute shot of linda syverson-kerr with her son riding behind

MN Expo was Great!  I made the voyage from 4+ hours north to be there
Friday and Saturday just to see the Fjords.  It was such a nice group of
people showing a nice variety of Fjords (stout to svelt, all 3 genders,
tiny baby to been-there-done-that) doing a wide variety of disciplines
(trail riding, western pleasure, english, dressage, training cart,
meadowbrook, team)!  I was very warmly welcomed by the whole group of
Fjord people, they all were genuinely lovely and welcoming to me, a
virtual stranger.  I was allowed to help out truly felt useful.  I was
awed by the nerves of steel of this group... I've attended many an Expo
many a horse show... but never with the eyes of one moving horses through
a mass of people like this!  OMG!  Every Last Nerve was Standing At
Attention as I watched tried to contribute to moving these horses
safely through baby strollers, toddlers, golf carts, rodeo cows, dollies
full of metal chairs, other horses dancing away from people in
flip-flops...  My hat is off to the brave and steady souls who pulled
this off with finesse, class, and nerves of absolute steel!  You were
amazing and your horses were out of this world!  Hats off to you.

Minnesota Expo is coming up in a few months.  Anyone making plans to
bring their Fjords?  I've attended as a 4H Mom/shopper/audience member;
what's it like to bring your horse?

Kate

Lori's Update, and MN Expo

I really enjoy reading your posts, thanks for updating us. The trip to
Portugal sounded like a dream of a week.

I am taking riding lessons from a really good instructor, and I watch
her give my barn owner dressage lessons (me:  I get basic equitation;
that is my current speed . . .) and it amazes me to see the progression.
Such little changes result in huge differences in performance. She said
something yesterday that seemed to be in line with your comment about
teaching young horses one way, and then having to teach them another way
for dressage. It was about just lifting your body into the canter
position, and then having the young, fairly green horse just rise up
naturally to canter. No leg cue, no nothing. Very interesting, and it
worked beautifully on the horse that the barn owner was riding.

We made some good progress in my lesson yesterday, I am becoming a more
confident rider, although I don't think I will ever feel as comfortable
as I do when I'm driving!

Linda, sign me up for Expo, and I'm pretty sure I can help out on
Thursday. I'm between jobs right now, have three weeks off, happy
camper.

I wanted to say thank you to Linda and Kristin, for a wonderful job at the
stall decorations and all the hard work at pulling us together and putting
together a wonderful demo at the MN Expo.
I enjoyed being part of the demo. and the friendships made. Everyone there did
a excellant job at showing people what these wonderful animals are about.
I look forward to seeing everyone at Blue Earth.
