This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I switched Bogie, the calorically challenged Love Pony, from regular sweet feed to Nutrina Lite (talk to me later about America's love affair with incorrect spelling) and have been very pleased with the results. He's still pretty prosperous looking but is slowly returning from maximum density to his usual chubby-blond- pony appearance. He's never going to have that sveldte look that Braveheart seems to maintain so easily but I don't really think that's what he's supposed to look like. Unlike BH, he's got the metabloism of a sloth and gains a pound every time he hears a carrot snap...a condition with which I can really identify! Anyhow, he seems to like the Nutrina Lite and I think it's helping a lot. Kay, just back from shoveling snow in MI and Braveheart and Bogie, just on their way out to roll in it. **Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. Nutrena Lite
This message is from: "Pat Holland" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I know of many people who switched to Nutrena Lite Balance after the 25th Anniversary Show but will let them speak for themselves. I wrote about feeding Nutrena Lite a couple years ago, it wasn't by choice, our local/long time feed provider switched from Purina to Nutrena - I really like the Lite product. All of my Fjord horses, and those in training with me are on it. I use a Nutrena 14% Omalene mixture - growth (with Molasses) on the youngsters and one very old pony (not Fjord). I also use the Nutrena Lite product on one Irish Sport Horse. The amount given (anywhere between 1/2 lb per feeding to 1 1/2 lbs per feeding - twice a day) depends on: age weight amount of work individual demeanor predisposed to injuries their free choice intake and what kind of shape they came to me in (I've had them come to me obese and underweight) And most importantly the quality of hay given. Our hay is tested. The above formula is when the horses are in a controlled eating environment, in the spring if they are on pasture (for Fjords - more than a split second) then all of the above needs to be reanalyzed and reconfigured. If I had known about the Nutrena Lite product earlier, I would have used it. I am pleased with the results. Thinking now, I don't think I've ever fed two horses exactly the same, ever. Nutrena Lite etc.
This message is from: "Beth Pulsifer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello again everyone, Thank you so much for all the responses about Nutrena lite. Sounds like those of you using it are happy with it so far. I do believe my horses are looking better since being on it...Nice coats, though long and fuzzy for winter...They shine! It's also nice to know all the supplements they need are there. Maybe as time goes on and we are using it for longer we'll have more pros and cons to share.. I would like to wish everyone on the list a very Happy Thanksgiving. Nutrena Lite and bits & Thanksgiving
This message is from: "Pat Holland" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Coming from the old school - I always felt comfortable with the old omalene mixture of feed for all horses (Fjords and others) Protein content depending on age and amount of work - however it was funny, my local vendor was a Purina dealer - when I came back from Winona, they had changed to Nutrena. I really didn't pay much attention to the Nutrena product when I was at Winona even though it was a major sponsor - now - because we buy all of our feed for our cows through this particular dealer - Nutrena has become my horse feed and I am now feeding all of the mature Fjord horses the "lite" product. I like it. very much. because I have only been on it for about a month, I can't say what long term effects I will find on it - but so far so good. I use the 16% growth feed Nutrena has for the young/growing stock and again I like the quality of the feed. Good stuff. As far as bit's and Carol's remark regarding "listening to your horse", she is right on. When I get horses in for training - the first few weeks are a guessing game - trying to figure out what they are about, past training, their individual mind set and so forth. When it comes to bits few horses fall into one category with bitting. When I find the bit the horse accepts well, I make sure the owner continues with the same bit I trained in. And it varies as much as each horses takes to training. Right now I have a great project, "WW Reidar", owned by Kathy and Randy Johnson. This is the first "Gjest" I've worked with. Michael Scott did a great job with him in driving but riding is another matter. I believe Michael drove :"Reidar" in a Mylar combination type of bit, but I found when riding him I wasn't getting the apparent same feel Michael was so successful with. So began the guess game - of what worked and didn't. I finally found something he relaxes in, bends nicely, stretches in and accepts very well. What I use and have used on many Fjords may not be for all of you - but because of my history - works for me - it's a very simple, Tom Thumb jointed Pelham with only 4" shanks - very mild. I ride with two reins.I use the snaffle rein as a primary tool, and "play" with the 2nd rein - for the shank action only when needed. it works great with some horses - because if your riding off the snaffle and they get leaning on you - all it takes is a little gathering of the shank to get them up and off the leaning routine...and back ti lightit's fun...cause you can feel them thinking..."where did that come from".when they quit leaning, I relax the shank and continue with the snaffle...in time I can rely on just a snaffle. It takes some doing hand wise - the added rein and all - but it works slick. I really like this "Gjest" son "Reidar" is a blast to ride. VERY very comfortable to sit to and light and attentive and his training is coming along really well. I've spoke of many different bloodlines and what each brings to the table, this being my first "Gjest" I am intrigued with what he is telling me. Very bright, very willing, great work ethic, and Carol is right about movement - "Reidar" has that movement everyone is wanting now - he is not heavy, and bends like a noodle. He "got" my leg aids the first time I rode him - right from the beginning. We will be promoting "Reidar" this year - taking him to the MWFHC winter meeting in Dixon, Il - the Midwest Horse Fair, in Madison, Blue Earth and an evaluation as soon as a date for one is set. Lastly - you all have a good Thanksgivingthis year I have so many things to be thankful for - but most of all to all of my clients this past year who trusted me with their horses and allowed me the time with them. It was a GREAT year!!! Always Pat Holland The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw
RE: nutrena lite balance
This message is from: "Marcia Pace" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> This message is from: "Beth Pulsifer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello everyone, Am wondering if anyone has been trying the new Nutrena Lite Balance feed on their Fjords. If so how do you like it? Hi Beth, We've been feeding Nutrena's lite balance to our 6 fjords (ages 1.5 yr. thru 6 yrs) since the first of September. I am very happy with it. The horses look great, shiny coats, lots of hoof growth etc. Our fjords also are not getting the full recommended amount. Each horse gets approx. 1 lb. per day. We have lots of pasture here so I do not have to feed hay yet. This time of year they get to be on pasture 24/7! In another couple of weeks we will be adding hay to the diet (Timothy). Re: nutrena lite balance
This message is from: Martie Bolinski <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Beth, We just started using it and are still at the 'weaning into it' stage. Everyone seems to like it ok, but maybe just because there is still the flavor of the 'old stuff' until we work them off of it completely. The sales rep sure makes it sound like an ideal feed for Fjord and 'pony type metabolisms'. I'm up to about .5 lb per feeding on the Fjord and .25 for the pony. The Arab gets about double the Fjord. Even the picky pony seems to be cleaning up his feed now. Do you feed anything else with it? We are giving 'hay cubes' (timothy) for filler plus some vitamins that we are weaning off of also since the Lite Balance has the vits and mins pre-added. We've only been at it about a week now. If any of you are using it have you seen any major differences.? I have found I don't use as much as is called for as far as their body weight goes.
