Darn, sorry to hear about Charley.
Llamas eat almost anything. We feed grass hay but they Llamas love to be
turned loose in our back woods to forage the blackberry bushes. They will
strip the canes absolutely clean with those mobile lips. Your pasture
should really be enough for the Llama as they don't eat much. Supplement
the grazing with something like Llama Lite (mostly minerals) once a
dayworm twice a year with ivomec. Easy keepers.
A companion Llama would be an excellent choice. They are the most curious
critters in the world and will have a ball with children nearby. You would
want a gelding male or a female for a companion. I love my boys, but adore
my femalesas usual they are the most loving.
All part of my harem...
It also helps to have three huge Great Pyrenees running around the ranch.
