I taught our last foal 'Sage' to bow when he was just about 2 months old. I
was picking up his feet and cleaning them and decided to see if he'd go down
on one knee. I just tucked his left front leg up with my right hand and
pressed on his chest with my left hand, and down he went. It took several
times before he'd stay down for any length of time, but he finally relaxed
and would stay down after I let go. We have since sold him here locally and
I went to see him a few weeks ago. I asked his new owner if he would still
bow and she said he hadn't ever tried to see. So of course I had to try!!
Sage is now nearly two, and the last time he'd bowed for me was at about 9
months old, but he went right down like it was yesterday! His owner, Kim is
so proud of him, he does round pen work on voice commands, ground drives
beautifully, and is getting ready to start some light cart work this spring.
( And she thinks he needs a little brother to come live with him too, so is
anxiously awaiting our new arrivals!)

Cynthia: After using carrots to teach my Fjord, Jock to bow, he now puts his
head down and starts to bow when he wants a carrot! He does not like to go
down on his knee, but we are working on that. I'm also trying to get him to
bow when I tap his shoulder, in hopes that someday(?) he will bow while I am
mounted, though I'm not so sure this will ever happen since there won't be a
carrot under his chest! I just enjoy teaching Jock new things and he is so
tolerant of the dumb stuff I ask of him.
