I'm hardly an expert, Denise, but we put borium (why do I want to say
barium??) caulks on all four shoes (her winter set) for the ice on our sand
and gravel roads. This summer we have used full pads on the front for
"ouchiness" which was clearly evident when driving on the road .. little
mincing steps all disappeared and now she sets off at a brisk trot (yes,
Lori, brisk!!) - especially with the cooler temperatures with no hesitation
and only a very rare trip here and there .. My farrier advises me to give
her feet a breather and leave her shoeless from November to Xmas (the deer
season here and I won't be out on the trails or the road much!) and then
back to the borium cleats for the ice and snow. We also use these
marvellous sort of open rubber insoles that prevent the ice from building up
in the hoof. The hoof is always clean.

Happy fjording to all you new horse owners ..
