Sorry Michelle but I think helmets are ALWAYS correct. I can't imagine that there is a judge around that would dare to knock off points for wearing one of them. If there is they need their card pulled as fast as someone can write their name down. This message is from: griet vandenbroucke [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi , I do wear my vest all the time evenwhen I ride in the arena. I think it is a habit. And yes, I always wear my helmet.I think it will not protect you against all injuries but it will make the difference. This message is from: GAIL RUSSELL [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have an eventers vest that I have not worn much, but it is stupid not to, as it is really not uncomfortable. It is mesh netting, over the padding, so there is quite a bit of ventilation. It has several articulating pads that also make it comfy. It think the single pads, tight vest may actually be safer...but less likely worn. To take the discussion to the next level, do any of you out there wear vests? This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To take the discussion to the next level, do any of you out there wear vests? I require all riders under the age of 18 to wear a Xcountry vest when they trail ride. Adults can choose for themselves. However, I did have an adult fall off IN the arena and crack some ribs. If she had been wearing a vest (which she now does all the time) she would be fine other than some bruises. I always wear a vest on my 17.2 hand warmblood. It's just too far to fall. I sent 3 girls off to pony club camp a week ago. All 3 wear their vests religiously now. Whether in the ring or on the trail. They were asked not to wear them for heat reasons. All 3 refused, saying they had been wearing them all summer and were quite comfortable. These are the same girls who yell at me when I jump on their horses during a lesson and don't ask them to borrow their helmet :-) They're great kids! This message is from: bolinsj [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have a friend who wears a cloth 'hood' under her hardhat on really sunny days. She has had two skin cancer lesions removed and in addition to the usual sunblock, wears this white cotton knit hood. Her hardhat has a small visor, bigger than mine, that provides a little shading but not much. Myself, I used to just wear my hair real long on my neck for shade in the back. I'm with you on the shade issue. And have just recently switched to Neutrogena tinted moisturizer with an SPF of 30. Even on the hottest of days (like yesterday and today) I can go out in the sun (not that I want to!) and do chores and not get burnt. Also trying to get my outside work done before 10:00 a.m. and after 2:00 p.m. helps. For some reason, as I think I said before, my Troxel seems to keep the sun off of my face. Must be the way they designed the visor. Pamela

I did have a call in to Sunday Afternoons, a company that makes fabric hats...including ones with a sheik-like backveil (there is a name for this, but it is not coming to me) to ask if they would make something that would fit onto a helmet. Never got a call back. Maybe I will have to design and market something, unless someone knows of another possibility? Gail Gail Russell Forestville CA [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This message is from: bolinsj [EMAIL PROTECTED] Robyn, Been there with the well situation. And we only had about 6 horses at the time. New well is holding up well (so far, keep fingers and toes crossed) even with the drought. We conserve as much as possible though, so the gardens are gone and the swimming pool has become a frog pond for the summer. HUGE bullfrogs in there (where do they come from anyway? They always seem to know where the water is.) I have a smaller one in my waterlilly garden too. And a snapping turtle. Poor waterlilly garden gets the water I pour out of the dehumidifier in the tack room. Martie in there - hang in there and do a little rain dance (LITTLE rain dance - not floodgates of hades dance please). This message is from: bolinsj [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hubby has one of those western hat/riding helmets. The hat is horrendously LARGE to go over the hat and looks a tad peculiar. We do not show. John now just wears the helmet that came inside the hat. Keeps losing the hat in the woods anyway. I think it a shame the western classes don't use hardhats of some sort. I always feel out of place riding with western friends because NONE of them will wear a hardhat. Cowboys don't do hard hats. anyway, I think the hard hat/western hat combo can be found in some of the tack shops and mail order places. Martie in MD
Re: To wear a helmet or not?
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] There are western helmets - they run around $100 but well worth the cost if you love your child or yourself. Having had 2 concussions while competing in Western events and not wearing a helmet I've learned my lesson. At our lesson barn it is mandatory that all riders wear their helmets while working with the horses whether riding or not. There is a study that showed that more horse related injuries happen while not mounted. A little prevention is much better than healing afterwards. Our kids just tell everyone that helmet hair is cool. On another subject we at the farm just had to drill a new well due to the continuing drought conditions. One well with 40 equines and 4 dwellings just wasn't enough. Robyn in MD where the heat is here to stay I think.

This message is from: Lierin The Lovable Lemon [EMAIL PROTECTED] There are western hats you can buy that have built in helmets inside of them. :) Can't say I've tried one, but I have seen them advertised many times. This message is from: Debbie Treydte [EMAIL PROTECTED] What does one do that rides with a western hat. If you show Western riding with the typical helmet won't get it. Do they have some sort of inserts? Deb T. _ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx
