Kris,
If you don't find anyone on the list, I have used a
hauling company called Crystal Creek that are out of
Ocala and do alot of hauling between there and
Kentucky. They are a husband and wife and are
extremely conscientious and reliable. Before I had my
a lot of experience hauling, I had them come down here
and haul a horse I used to have from here to Ocala for
training, they hauled my warmblood from here to
Gainesville and back when he had sinusitis and they
took Ooruk back to Ocala for training when they
dropped the warmblood off(and only charged me $100 to
take him since they were going back north anyway) and
I am not sure who brought him back. At any rate, I
have used them several times and never had anything
but good results. If you need their contact info, let
me know.

Hi Bill, Pat, and Glen,

Thanks for the compliments! I was certainly not fishing, haha, nor were we
the transporters Linda had hired. It is just a personal pet peeve of mine to
hear of problems with a transport always resulting in dissatisfaction with
the transporting company when there are extenuating circumstances beyond the
transporter's control, such as the pickup being canceled when the transporter
has already driven however far to get there.

Do not get me wrong, there are very poor transporters out there and they do
need to be watched out for.

I have used Bailey's to ship a foal I bought from them. We were on the back
end of the trip but she looked great coming off the trailer. They truley
care about what they are transporting and also called the night before and
the day of delivery to give a time estimate. As a consumer, If the
transporter showed up to pick up a horse and I canceled for any reason I
would expect to pay at least a partial fee. The transporter has already done
part of his job just getting to you, unless he is your next door neighbor.

Hello,

As we transport part time, I feel it necessary to shed some light on the
"other side" of this coin.

Yes, things like this do happen and it is awful on all sides, no doubt!

This also is quite common. People get very frustrated with transporters as
often, a deposit has been paid that is nonrefundable, or the transporter
refuses to wait, or the transporter is unable to immediately reschedule a
pickup.

It is quite costly to transport and normally, the stops are 100s of miles
apart. When a cancellation occurs midroute, the transporter often loses
enough money that the entire trip has lost its profitability. Normally, the
deposit will at least partially cover the costs incurred to get to that stop
and hopefully make things break even. Most transporters will not wait simply
as time is money in this business, plus the other clients normally do not
appreciate it! As for rescheduling? A month is really a good time frame to
figure on for a rescheduling time. Not only does the transporter have to
finish the current route, but most likely has a few others lined up that must
be completed prior to rescheduling a canceled pickup.

> So I'm looking for a transport service that is reliable, reasonable in price
>

There are always a few rules of thumb to check when looking into quality
transport and believe it or not, cost is really at the bottom of the list, or
it should be.

-How new is the equipment? How often is it maintenenced?

-How often are the horses given breaks? Overnight breaks, as well?

-Are they offered free choice quality hay and ample water throughout the trip?

-What is the ventilation?

-Are the floors padded? Walls? Butt pads? Side pads?

-Is the driver a CDL holder? Experience?

And the list can go on and on. ALWAYS ask for references and check them!
Fuel prices have skyrocketed, so transporting costs have gone way up. If one
gets a very low rate, I would suggest even more thorough investigation.
Afterall, you are hiring a transporter to care for your horse and get it to
its destination safely and with as little stress and trauma as possible.

Reliability is probably the hardest thing to check in regard to a
transporter. The entire route depends on if everyone along the route has the
horses ready for pickup and also, ready to receive on the other end. I can
tell you endless stories of us being held up due to people not having the
horse ready even with ample notice, or not being ready to receive, even after
given days or even weeks of notice. Plus there is weather, traffic, road
constructionI suppose this one depends on what exactly you mean by
reliable.

Good luck finding transport for your horse in such a short time frame. There
are transportation boards on Yahoo you might be able to check.

Transport needed

2003-02-17 Thread Linda Walker
This message is from: "Linda Walker" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Can anyone recommend a reliable horse transport service?

I recently bought a horse and the day before she was to be picked up, several
horses from her barn became ill from an unknown cause. My horse was not one
of them...thank God. To be on the safe side, the decision was made not to
ship my horse. Unfortunately, the horse carrier had already arrived and they
were informed that the horse to be transported was not going. I feel bad for
the transport company, but then again, this was something that was out of our
control. This illness came on suddenly, there was no warning.

Upon conversing with the hired transport company, it was decided to terminate
the contract with them. Without going into detail, they were not being very
kind about my situation and their route would not take them back to that area
for at least another month, if then.

So I'm looking for a transport service that is reliable, reasonable in price
and will be having a rig going to New York State within the next week or so.

If anyone can help me, please return an email..asap.

Thanks in advance,

Linda
