Brigid,
Sure sounds like a really wonderful time Mr Knute & you had at the Fresno
clinic w/ Shirley!
Guess what? I used to train w/ Shirley waaay, waay back in the olden days
before Fjordies (and I'm not telling how long ago!) when I was a student at
SSU in Sonoma County. If you could email me privately, I'd like to
re-connect w/ her.
Btw, see you guys soon in Carson City; the jumps await you (and anyone else
brave enuf!)

*** Thanks Cindy! It sure is a great reward. Time is one of the joys of a
lifetime commitment.

I'll see you in Nevada for the Fjord Fest in just a few short days. After the
CC clinic I am much more confident about the show, and looking forward to it
even more.

cross country clinic, Knute's public debut!

2003-10-06 Thread Epona1971
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Good morning everyone!

Yesterday Knute & I enjoyed our first outing together. After 3 years of
ground work, arena and trail riding, we felt ready to move up. Travis Air Force
Base in Fairfield, CA has an awesome equestrian center. They hold many fun
shows
and clinics which are open to all. This weekend was a cross country clinic
with instructor Shirley Antrobus.

Thanks to a busy schedule and unhappy events such as my Grandmother's passing
away, I never had time to practice. I managed to swallow my fear till we were
almost there. As we pulled in the gate I got a little sweaty and wondered if
I could go through with this. Well, the best cure for me has always been to
"just do it," so I soldiered on. As soon as Knute got out of the trailer, I
knew
we would have no trouble. He was calm and acted as if he traveled to strange
equestrian facilities every week. Not only that, he was happy! He knew we were
finally going to do something new and exciting. Dagrun groomed and tacked
Knute, then followed us to the cross country course.

Now, I thought the beginner class would be in an arena with little poles or
something. Nope, we were out in the open with the real thing! There were two
others in my class, riding a Thoroughbred and an Arabian. Bit by bit, the
instructor schooled us on each type of obstacle. Knute was a champ, doing all
these
strange things obediently. At first I did everything as slowly as possible,
but by the end of the session I was galloping around, standing in the stirrups
hollering Hee-Yaa!! When the instructor saw this, she advised me to settle down
a bit ;-D

This day proved all I hoped for Knute. He got many compliments for being
obedient, brave, and sure-footed. It seems slipping and stumbling is a
dangerous
problem in this sport. I got compliments for being brave, focused, and
absolutely glued to the saddle. A couple good falls have convinced me I don't
ever
want another one!

I posted photos and comments on my web site. Click on the "Events - Cross
Country Clinic" page. Enjoy!

Oh yeah, almost forgot about Dagrun and Quinn! They were in the novice class
which involved higher, more solid jumps and a faster pace. Of course Quinn was
everyone's favorite cute pony ;-) They did really well and learned a lot.
There was an especially funny moment when Quinn jumped a little ditch. We
expected him to think nothing of it, since he trail rides all the time. Well,
we were
in for a surprise when he leaped straight up in the air like a rabbit! I am
so sorry I didn't get a photo of that!

Best of all, we left both the instructor and the participants thoroughly
impressed with Fjords.
