Hello fellow Fjord owners,

Here at Nottawa Crossing Fjords, we are familiar with the fly allergies!
Many years ago I had a Fjord mare that was allergic to them and I had to make
her the neck and chest cover, as they were not readily available. Her pasture
time was just in the early morning in hot weather. I tried the 'Spot-On'
with her, but heard so much talk against it, that I discontinued using it.
She
did outgrow the allergies as she got older. However, her half brother is a
different story! He wears the neck cover, fly 'blanket' and leggings, as
well as only being out in the early morning on pasture. Night time turnout on
dry lot is okay. Tried many other remedies that I do not remember, and being
17 now, he has not outgrown it. I've tried a couple of different flax feeds,
with some results. Now I am feeding Omega Horseshine, as it is less
expensive and easier to obtain. Also have tried the garlic supplement, with
NO
results.

Our horses are out on pasture one and a half hours or so, depending on the
moisture. The rest of the day, they are on dry lot, with hay. In the summer
they are kept in during the day to minimize flies, as well as keeping their
coats nice. One is never on pasture. It is a continuous job of checking hoof
temperature, as well as ankle pulse to keep ahead of founder. Some of the
horses, I can tell when I ride them, that they are 'off' and are sore, and
they need to be cut back on time out on grass. Fjords do "live to eat".

Regards,
