I'm with Karen...I do like to keep a fleet enema on hand, but seldom have to
use it.  I would say it is part of a good foaling "kit".

Not routinely, but if I think there is a problem, in that there is no 
detectable meconium on its butt or the surrondings (careful, dogs lOVE it!) 
or the little one is obviously straining away and its been over an hour 
since birth, then yes, I do. I use one of the prepared ones in the 
disposable syringe from the supermarket. I have never had a problem with 
horses not being able to poop, rather when mom goes into her foal heat and 
the little ones scour, now that gets interesting, and I do stay on top of 
that.


Karen in absolutely frigid Nevada. Its sooo cold (chatter-chatter), that I 
do not want to don my Carhartts and feed...brr

foal enema?

I have a question for all you experts on foaling.  Do you routinely give
newborn foals an enema?  If so what kind and when?
I have been given different answers on this, and with a mare to foal in a
couple weeks, I need to make up my mind.  Thanks, Mary
