Andy - the hot blooded horses are those with fiery temperaments,
including Arabs, Berbers, Turkoman, and Thoroughbred. The Kaltblut
(coldblooded) are the draft horses, including Fjords, Belgians,
Clydesdales, Breton, Friesen and other heavy horses, known for their calm
temperaments. The Warmbloods are the result of crossing the hotblooded
horses with the Kaltblut and include the European breeds of Trahkener;
Hanoveraner;Swedish, Danish and Dutch WB, Andalusian, etc. They are more
spirited than the Kaltblut, but not as spirited as the hotblooded
horses. The Morgan is the true American Warmblood, being by an imported
English thoroughbred (and thus a great-grandson of the Darley Araber) and
most likely out of a Friese mare. The Haflingers have alot of Arab blood
in their background, so this would make them a warmblood, so their
temperament will be different from our Fjords. It is my understanding
that the Fjord is one of the few breeds that never had any Arab crossed
into it, which would certainly account for their calm temperament. Based
on my observations, I can tell you that a calm Fjord and a calm Morgan
are NOT the same thing! Rikka as a 5 year old green horse is much calmer
than the calmest Morgan I ever had and all except 2 of mine were calm for
Morgans. We have alot of Isi Pferde over here and Herr Eitenmüller has a
neighbor with a big Isi Pferde farm. He told me those horses were hyper
and as soon´as someone gets on them, they start jigging around and want
to go. They're fast too. The ones I saw at Euro Cheval opened up all
the way looked almost as fast as an Arab. Since the Vikings settled
Iceland, it would appear to me that the Isi Pferde would be descendants
of the Fjords taken there by the Vikings and then developed differently
over the last 1,000 years. I have a new e-mail address. I will start
