No, Naxcel is just Naxcel. No penicillin.

Jean,

Yes, I dilute them in water, but I either use a dosing syringe or cut the
end out of a regular syringe. Actually, I don't use SMZ's much anymore
because so many things have become resistant to them. Naxcel works good
for these conditions (once/day injection).

By the way Steve W are you dosing with smzs in water etc. Have you tried
using water? The smzs separate and become thick and almost hard so they do
not go through the large hypo. Maddening. It is a point for applesauce.

Hi Gail do not remember if I answered you or not about your ideas re the
sinus problem.. I have those antique medicine bits with the funnel but I
also wondered if he might get bit shy. Well, come to think of it he is not
ridden anymore so would not make any difference. When I was dosing him with
bute for two months he got so he would try and hide if he heard me lifting
the halter from its hook.

He is too sensitive re taste. Anything slightly off and he is shy of it.
Never cared for sweets. Something will be bound to work soon. Jean

Steve thanks for getting to me. This boy it near 18 hands and I went
through two months of dosing him with bute, and about ended up in the
hospital. He did get better about accepting the dosing towards the end.

I must be honest as I have not started SMZs yet. I want to know that that
is the best and only course. He had an allergic reaction to a penicillin
shot when he was a colt. Now twenty. I do have some antique medicine bits
that I might clean out and use.

Some of this I blame on his tremendous reaction to the sarcoid med Regressen
(sp) last winter as it took a lot out of him. One of those sarcoids is
still working. It is as though all the immune system has gone to the
sarcoids.

Would like your input. Jean

Jean,

Are you feeding the SMZ's or are you dosing them diluted in water with a
syringe?

Thanks Randi I will try it and let you know. When he was scoped the shot
made him sag and his head hung down and over a quart of the stuff came out.
Ugh. Jean

Hi - I know this may sound crazy but I had a yearling with a goopy nose last
year--I put some Vicks balm in his nose and it seemed to clear him out in a
couple days. I did it twice a day, just a finger full or so right inside his
nose, it loosened his sinuses up at first and gobs of snot came out but
then it was way less and he seemed he felt better too. he was on antibiotic
too-- but the Vicks was more of an immediate remedy.
hope you find something that helps and he's feeling better soon.

I get so much help from all the ideas here. Here is another question.
How
do you treat sinus infections in horses? I treated two of my horses some
years ago with Vit C in large doses and electrolytes. Took about three
months and either they outgrew it or the treatment worked. Now my guy is
streaming a white/gray stuff from his one nostril and scope showed
infection. As he is allergic to penicillin I have started him on Vit C
and
Lixotinic. We are having icy weather so it is not helping the situation.
Vet says use SMZs but I have a terrible time getting them down him,
believe
me I have tried all the honey, apple sauce , molasses etc. A very
suspicious
 horse. Jean

I have considered those bits that are just worming dosers in disguise.
Figure the horse would just become bit shy AND you would never get near to
inject the wormer into them anyway.

One thing that has worked with us has been clicker training to the wormer
tube. If horsey looks at the wormer tube, they get a click and a treat.
Then if they move toward it. Then touch it, etc. You could put the treat
in a stainless steel bowl held in the hand if you did not want them getting
grabby at your hand. Our fussiest horse was much easier to worm after only
five minutes of this routine.

The only other thing I can think of is pushing extra liquids? I have a
nasty cold and am drinking like crazy. Will your horse drink extra if you
spice the water with apple juice or kool aid?
