What if we didn't renew our subscriptions because Flex

released 6 months after Macromedia sales guys said that it would?

Is there a discounted upgrade or are we just screwed?

Summary: If you were on Flex 1.5, you'll get at least one Flex 2 FDS

 Thanks Jason,

I have only Unistalled Beta 3. But I have already run the flash
player uninstaller before installing the new debug version of Flash
9.

With Beta 2 it was working OK, When I have installed beta 3, IE
stopped working and I have installed FireFox that worked for some
time.

I remember that just before a debugging session The Windows
Firewall insformed that java was trying go out and asked me if I
wanted to block it, and I choose to continue blocking. Since then
the debugger stopped for FireFox too and I could not debug.

I am sure this is a security issue but I am not able to find

  Hi everybody,

This is my last message about this problem. Flex is fantastic,
I
 am
  using it since alpha version.

I have an application ready to deploy that I have finished
 without a
debug (the older will remember old times when debugging was
done
  with Alert boxes).

I hoped that with the release version I could debug again, but
 this
is not true. I cannot use a development tool that does not
have a
debugger and I cannot reinstall my development workstation
 everytime
  a new nersion is released.

I have downloaded the new debug version of Flash player 9,
 installed
it and after that the version is still 16 (standard version),
 not 15
  (debug version).

And the browser is still crashing.

The problem is occuring since I have installed beta 3 (two
months
ago). My problem is that the browser craches and Windows shows
 me a
message box telling that IE encountered a problem with an add-
on
 and
needs to close. And the add-on is Fldbg9.ocx.

This is the fourth message and I beleive that Adobe should take
 care
  of it.

  Thanks in advance

RE: [flexcoders] What is the difference between versions of Flex Data Services

2006-07-02 Thread Matt Chotin

The question is how important is
scalability to your app. If it needs to scale that means multiple machines (or
at least processors) and in that case you need to pay. A lighter-weight app
may be fine using one CPU in which case FDS Express is the way to go. We
expect Express to be used for personal stuff but most business apps that have
scalability requirements will need a paid license.

So this would mean you can have as many users as you want on one box

of 100 users for 6k.

I'm not getting the value proposition.

Hank

I would imagine it depends if you have active/passive or active/active
 failover.
In the former case, only one server is ever running at a time, ergo one
 license needed.

We want you to be able to support this configuration so we have an option

For enterprise you pay

RE: [flexcoders] https with name ro in flex 1.5

2006-07-02 Thread Peter Farland

Unfortunately Flex 1.5 does compile time
validation of this information, so I think you will have to have an https URL
in the amf-https-gateway property in the configuration. The error message is
probably re-used for all three services so its using the property name
from perhaps the http proxy service (a minor bug). If youre using
ColdFusion, Im guessing youre using JRun under the covers? It
shouldnt be hard to setup JRun for SSL with a self-signed certificate
for testing purposes on your local dev box.

In Flex 2.0 weve removed this sort
of validation at compile time.

Subject: [flexcoders] https with
name ro in flex 1.5

Hey guys,
I'm in the process of converting my existing ro's to named ro's.
(We're running from multiple servers, each with it's own flex
server. Each server obviously having it's own gateway and endpoint
paths. Because of this it's been a real hassle pushing stuff with all
hardcoded ro's in mxml) We're a CF shop and running coldfusion cfcs on
the bakend. Before I had everything specified in the ro, endpoint,
protocol, etc. Now that I've split it out to a named ro, I can't get
things working. I am compiling from cmd line with mxmlc on commercial
flex 1.5.

Error:
Warning: Could not set protocol to https. You must set https-url to a
non-relative https value for RemoteObject in flex-config.xml or set
gatewayHttpsUrl to a non-relative https value when using mxmlc.

I don't understand this error as flex-config doesn't allow https-url
in the remote-objects section.

Example of mxml I'm using:
mx:RemoteObject id=roGetAllDiscounts
named=roGetAllDiscounts
protocol=https showBusyCursor=true
mx:method name=getDiscount
fault=mx.controls.Alert.show(event.fault.faultstring,
'Alert');
result=roGetAllDiscountsHandler(event.result)/
/mx:RemoteObject

Example of named call in ro whitelist:
object name=roGetAllDiscounts
sourceapp.machii.model.flexOnlineSignup/source
/object

Gateways for this instance:
(local dev box)

amf-gatewayhttp://steve.mybox.com/amfgateway/amf-gateway
amf-https-gatewayhttp://steve.mybox.com/amfgateway/amf-gateway

The domain I typed above is fake, as it's something similar that
points to my local machine from our company's dns. I'm trying to cheat
in the https gatway line because I technically don't have a cert on my
local dev box, where as the production server does. With the idea of
being able to leave in procol=https in the actual mxml for every
version. (both local and production).

So my question is.. how do I make a named remote object call work over
https? AND can I legally use a http url for an amf-https-gateway?

Before the example above was this in mxml:

mx:RemoteObject id=roGetAllDiscounts
protocol=https
endpoint=https://secure.xxx.com/flashservices/gateway
source=app.machii.model.flexOnlineSignup
showBusyCursor=true
mx:method name=getDiscount
fault=mx.controls.Alert.show(event.fault.faultstring,
'Alert');
result=roGetAllDiscountsHandler(event.result)/
/mx:RemoteObject

Thx
-Steve

[flexcoders] macFonts.ser file

2006-07-02 Thread John

Hi,I am still trying to configure eclipse with ANT on the mac.I was wondering if anybody knows if the .ser files are new in the final release. When I configure the ANT set up, the compiler is looking for this file, but can't find it. Was this file included before in the frameworks? This error is causing eclipse not to compile the mxml files.I was wondering if anybody can help me figure out how to work with the final release using the mac with eclipse?? Does somebody use eclipse with the mac to compile mxml files?I feel like it is impossible at this point, been trying for 3 days, and am about to give up!Thanks,John

6. FAQ

1. What is Flexcoders?

Flexcoders is a forum where developers can ask questions about Flex,
FlexBuilder, and Flex-related technologies (like Cairngorm, FlexUnit and
SynergyFLEX). The community is made up of everyday Flex developers as
well as Macromedia employees. However, this is not an official
Macromedia-sponsored forum, it is actually moderated by the folks at
iteration::two, a consultancy responsible for authoring the book
Developing Rich Internet Applications with Macromedia Flex.

2. How does Flexcoders relate to the Macromedia Flex Forum on
   www.macromedia.com?

Both the Macromedia Flex Forum and Flexcoders provide help on issues
related to Flex, and neither is an official support mechanism. Some
people monitor both forums, some only one. It is up to you to decide
where you might have a better experience getting a question answered and
being able to subsequently help others.

3. Who posts to Flexcoders?

Everyone who has a question or an answer. Many members of the Flex
development team read and respond to Flexcoders as well as other
Macromedia folks who monitor the community.

Some recurring Macromedia folks are:

David Mendels: EVP and GM, highest-level executive in charge of Flex.
Lucian Beebe: Sr. Product Manager, Flex. Matt Chotin, Manish Jethani,
Abdul Qabiz, Gordon Smith, Peter Farland and many more: Engineers on
Flex.

Active community members include:

Steven Webster (Technical Director at iteration::two and co-author of
Developing Rich Clients with Macromedia Flex), Alistair McLeod
(Development Director at iteration::two and co-author of Developing Rich
Clients with Macromedia Flex), Jesse Warden (JesterXL - Flash badass
playing with Flex), Tracy Spratt (long-time member, holder of all
knowledge related to 32K limits), Jeff Steiner (maintainer of
www.flexauthority.com), Tariq Ahmed (maintainer of www.cflex.net), Jimmy
Gianninas (long-time member, developer at Optimal Payments).

And so many more!

4. Resources to check before asking a question

5. Guidelines to effective question-asking

Include a useful subject; this will help people find their own questions
and answers later.

Explain what you are trying to accomplish.

Explain the error (include compilation errors or a description of the
runtime behavior).

Be prepared to break your problem down into a simpler scenario in case
someone wants to try to debug the code themselves. Remember, private
web services are inaccessible; you may need to create some dummy data to
emulate problems.

Phrases to avoid:

URGENT (we all have deadlines, no one is intentionally delaying a
response to you)

Please send code (this is very frustrating to read as it implies you
aren't interested in learning anything on your own. Where code is
appropriate you can expect someone to provide it, but in many cases you
will learn more by doing it on your own with appropriate guidance. It
may be that you're on a deadline and just want to finish, but many of
those who respond regularly would prefer to teach you to fish so that
you can answer your own questions next time and even help out others).

6. Mini-FAQ

Q: Can I mail Matt, Manish, Abdul, Pete, Gordon, iteration::two, or
anyone else for that matter off-line with my question?

A: Please don't! If someone is capable of answering your question on-
list please believe that it will be done. Everyone on the list has
full-time jobs doing their own work and often answer flexcoders on their
own time; mailing them off- list doesn’t endear you to them. If no one
answers on-list in a reasonable amount of time (24 hours) you can try to
rephrase the question and perhaps include more detail (including a
version of the problem that someone can run without doing any setup on
their own

RE: [Junk E-Mail - LOW] [flexcoders] Re: No0b: Help installing SDK with Eclipse 3.2

2006-07-02 Thread Shannon Hicks

To be honest, if you're doing application development, you
probably won't be in design mode very often anyway.

I think the best advice is to try out the demo, and see if
you think it's worth the investment.

Keep in mind one of the lesser-known features... the Help
system. Kinda handy to have all the Flex CF documentation built right
in.

[flexcoders] app startup / load times

2006-07-02 Thread hank williams
For the first time since I started playing with flex (a couple of
weeks) I checked out the size of my app, which is currently 477k.

My app isnt that big, so I presume most of that is just the size of
the framework. I am just wondering what do people think about that in
terms of user start up time. For a user with a 500kbps connection that
is about 8 seconds before the app is loaded. Are people doing loaders
to get things started? is there an accepted strategy for how to deal
with this?

There was another thread recently about how people shouldnt use flex
for websites and one person provided aesthetic reasons. In my mind, if
there is a reason (and I am not arguing that there is) but if there is
a reason not to use it for websites it would be the file size. 10
seconds seems like a long time to make someone wait before they see
something. On the other hand perhaps I am underestimating the average
connection speed.

Anyway, like I said I would just like to get peoples thoughts on this issue.

Hank

[flexcoders] Tabbed Browsing support? htmlText, navigateToURL(), Javascript?

2006-07-02 Thread Greg Hamer

Has anyone here implemented tabbed browser support in Flex?i.e.
links in Flex content that can be opened in a new browser tab? (Note:
browser tab ... not Flex tab.)

I see three possible options:1) navigateToURL(); 2) TextField with htmlText containing html anchors; and 3) _javascript_.

For me the problems are ...

1) With navigateToURL(), how would you specify new tab?

2) With anchors in htmlText, Flash Player provides the context
menu. The Flash Player browser plug-ins include in the context
menu the option Open in new window. (The freestanding Flash Player
omits this option.)

3) With _javascript_, as a Flex/ActionScript developer I currently do not
possess the knowledge how to code a _javascript_ solution.(fyi ...
I have done some google searches on this, but so far no luck.)If
anyone can point me to a _javascript_ code solution, it would be much
appreciated :-)

Note: For those from Adobe that read this list ... With IE7's release
and it's support for tabbed browsing, if Flash Player provides no
support for opening links in tabs it will be increasing apparent that
Flash Player is essentially unaware of tabbed browsers.)

[flexcoders] QTP 9 to test Flex 2.0

2006-07-02 Thread Deepika
I am trying to use QTP 9 to test flex 2.0.
Does anyone have idea whether QTP 9 can support objects in aflex 2.0
application or not? Do I have to buy some spl. support files from
macromedia for that?

I had given this msg earlier also but not been able to get the proper

[flexcoders] Re: beta3 -- Binding XML data to List Controls -- data binding experts?

2006-07-02 Thread carkraus
Hi Tim, Jim,

any news on the issue yet?

I´m a flash developer just starting with Flex and also wonder what
the best way to message/bind/modify ie. XML data to controls is.

In addition to Tim´s question, I also would like to process some
values on the client.
Example: I have user data in an xml-file. I then take ie. name email
values directly from the file to populate a grid while I would like to
process 'last login' values in Flex so I can use date-sorting, etc...
How do I declare the data type for each received value in a list
control?

I would love to hear any hint to start my flex work the right way.

 Hi Jim,

 Thanks for the tip.

I just tried it and it's giving me an error saying that it could not
convert my xmldata. My data is coming back from a remoting service
and it is typed as XMLList. In addition, my xml has a root node. Any
ideas why I am getting an error.

 Cheers,

 Tim

data
  binding experts?

  Hi all,

I have XML data that is being returned from a remoting service. I
would like to bind this data directly to various List-based controls
(As I understand it, List controls like Arrays/ArrayCollections).
What is the best way to massage the incoming XML data so that it can
be binded directly to List controls.

  Any insight is greatly Appreciated.

  Cheers,

  Tim

[flexcoders] Cairngorm Responder interface changes

2006-07-02 Thread der_kotty
Hi,

I was just wondering why the com.adobe.cairngorm.business.Responder
interface has been changed since it has been released on Adobe Labs.
In Cairngorm 2.0 alpha (org.nevis.cairngorm.business.Responder) the
parameters of the onFault and onResult handlers were typed events
(ResultEvent and FaultEvent).

Why have the parameters been changed to '*'? Where is the sense in
that? To my opinion this is not really best practice but maybe
there's a really good reason for that? Does anyone know?

Cheers
David

[flexcoders] Anybody knows how SQLAdmin sample make connection with MS-SQL server?

2006-07-02 Thread stevenxiu
Hi All,

I am new to Flex and saw a very cool sample
http://www.kevinkaz.com/flex2/

How does the application connect to MS-SQL server? I have searched many
forums and never got luck to see a good answer about database
connection .etc.

Any expert please point me to the right way. A sample will be great
appreciated.

Hi Steve,
Here are a couple of links to get you moving in the right direction. A SQL Server database can be accessed directly with an HTTP parameter string and FOR XML output. But this method isn't recommended due to the possibility of SQL injection. Most SQL Server based applications implement a middle tier (like ASP.NET) to seperate the database from business and security logic. On the Flex side, you can use WebService, HTTPService, or RemoteObject. WebService is the most generic, but also the slowest. HTTPService is faster than WebService because SOAP isn't involved. RemoteObject is the method of choice for performance, because serialized data (AMF) is sent across the wire. I hope that this helps you get started.

Sorry Steve,
Part 2 of the .Net WebService article is a better example, related to your question.
