Re: [flexcoders] deep linking and seo
I would like to see a solution that supported deep linking with an option for SEO. I think a good SEO solution would make Flex a candidate for some projects where it's currently dismissed. I'm grappling with a decision now on whether or not to use Flex, with the only problems for Flex being deep linking, SEO, and the need for a little better html rendering. --Greg On 2/21/07, Matt Chotin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Quick little poll for you guys (written late at night, not validated by my bosses, please be gentle...). There has been plenty of discussion on this list and elsewhere about deep linking and SEO for Flex apps. Various solutions are available currently for deep linking like URLKit or SWFAddress. However a robust solution for SEO is not available, primarily because the search engine vendors need to cooperate a little bit (the most popular suggestion these days is to return HTML instead of a SWF when you think it's a search engine viewing your page, however this is known as "cloaking" and the search engines frown upon it; think about how porn sites operate and you'll know why). Deep linking on its own of course has benefits, better URL support in the address bar for bookmarking, copying into an IM or email, and even cleaner history management. But I would contend that most folks want deep linking so that pages can show up in a search engine, that while deep linking is nice, SEO is even more important. Q1: Do you think about deep linking primarily in the context of SEO, or do you often want deep linking for non-search-related tasks? We are currently investigating adding deep linking support into the Flex framework (similar perhaps to URLKit, but more integrated, design still TBD). However I also want to get your opinion as to whether you think we should be investing here at this time, knowing that we may not have an SEO solution at the same time. Note that as I said, SEO also requires search engine help, so this is not a straightforward tradeoff. Q2: Would you have us invest in deep linking before SEO, or is it of more use to you if they come out together? Are current deep-linking solutions sufficient for you at this time? Also note that this is a completely unscientific survey and that we reserve the right to do whatever we please regardless of how you respond :-P Thanks, Matt

[flexcoders] Server push from ColdFusion without FDS?
I know that if you have ColdFusion, you get the remoting without having to install FDS. I'm wondering if there is a way to do server-to-client-push without FDS. This may be wishful thinking, but here's the source of my speculation: In one article (http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/articles/cf_flex_print.html), Ben Forta says that ColdFusion has been updated to have "… a new Flex Messaging gateway which makes it possible to do push from ColdFusion to client-side Flex via a single CFML function. In other article. Ben states that "In addition to these improvements, we have created a brand new ColdFusion adapter that allows ColdFusion to push data to the Flash client at runtime." The way I'm reading these statements in context, they don't seem to be qualified with a requirement for FDS, in the same way that cf remoting does not require FDS. Incidentally, in the first article, FDS is mentioned when referring to data sync through CF: "There is a new ColdFusion adapter which can be used to perform data synchronization via FDS." So the question is: Can you perform server-to-client-push without installing FDS? Which is the same as asking (I think): Is server-to-client-push built into the cf adaptor, like remoting? Or am I only dreaming? -Greg Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~--> See what's inside the new Yahoo! As far as creating them, however, that takes a lot of work, time, and the decision to go pay vs. open source isn't one to be taken lightly if you value your time at all.
