I tried using an alert and still no go. the only other thing to add is the TextInput tag is in a Form inside a TitleWindow. [flexcoders] custom formatter
The format method on a custom formatter is not being called. I have trace stmts in the format method and they never print and the intended formatting doesn't happen. The class looks like: class myformatters.VersionStatusFormatter extends Formatter { : : public function format(value : String) : String { : : return someString; } } Its defined in a mxml like this: And then I use it like this: private function getVersionStatus() : String{ trace("VersionedAdmin - getVersionStatus"); return statusFormatter.format(someString); //someString is defined globally} I tried inlining the format method call in the text= attribute, but it didn't work there either. Everything compiles ok. And statusFormatter appears to be set to something, ala toString() reveals statusFormatter[object Object]. -S Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ADVERTISEMENT Yahoo! language support
I am trying to get different language support working in my application. My current target is French. The French text is fetched from a database at runtime. It can be displayed in a tree node label, in a text component, as a Window title, in a list, etc. In other words, many places. Running the application, I get problems like the character "é" replaced by "é". My only application change at this point is including the Basic Latin language-range tag in the flex config file. But this did not work. There is obviously something(s) else I must do. Can anyone shed some light? -S

Flex and the browser title
All, I have a situation where a server is not up and when trying to launch my Flex application the "cannot find server page" error displays in the browser title window. RE: [flexcoders] stack trace
That looks very helpful. Thanks. -S From Paul Reilly who made many improvements to the Debug Player I believe the Flex debug player that shipped with Flex 1.5, prints a stack trace for each warning. There is no way to programmatically dump a stack, though. To get line numbers and file names, all you have to do is load as SWD with the SWF (note from Matt, this means make the request ?debug=true). I added a nicelittle gem to mm.cfg to automatically suppress the debugger dialog, so that you can request the SWF with a SWD without having to opt out of the debugger each time. Here is the necessary mm.cfg settings: TraceOutputFileEnable=1 ErrorReportingEnable=1 SuppressDebuggerDialog=1 There is also a setting for turning on dumping a stack for each trace() statement: TraceLocationEnable=1 Using this with a trace() statement is pretty much a programmatic stack dump, but if there are lots of other trace() statements, this gets pretty chatty. Has anyone tried setting the icon attribute on a FormItem? I want to use an icon instead of a text label. Nothing I try seems to get the icon to show up. RE: [flexcoders] extraneous xml text node
I am confused as well, my problem appears a bit more insidious. I'll try to summarize more succinctly. In my WS handler I trace-out the props of the result argument and I get... ++ result props++ prop: type value: onResult++ prop: result value: spruitttoday++ prop: operation value: [object Object]++ prop: call value: PendingCall Object. This is not the actual result to a call. To get the result of a call, please use the result handler. Looks good. The value of the result.result property has the xml returned by my WS. To parse, I do this. var model = new XML();model.ignoreWhite = true;model.parseXML(result); var content : XMLNode = model.firstChild; Only content should be my root node CheckedOut; but its not. Its a Text node that has no text value. There is nothing else. I loop through the child nodes of model and all I get is one node whose type is 3. If I parse like this it works fine. model.parseXML(result.result); I have many WS handlers where I parse with model.parseXML(result); and these work fine. Why has this worked previously, but stopped working for this one WS call handler? Are those other handlers time bombs that could blow up? Do I need to go back and change them to model.parseXML(result.result);? -S I'm confused. If you take the result of the web service and use this: var doc = model.firstChild; var checkOutByNode = doc.firstChild; var checkOutByText = checkOutByNode.firstChild.nodeValue; does it work or not? I'm pretty sure when we get in XML we ignore the whitespace, but perhaps we don't. If you think the whitespace was not ignored I guesswhat you could do is create another XML, ignoreWhitespace, and then parse the first XML.toString(). If this fixes things we can look into why the WebService didn't' ignore whitespace (you should filea bug). RE: [flexcoders] Context menu
I have heard rumors about this book. Know anything about it? :>) Hi Steve,I can't remember seeing anything in the Beta docs, but i did start athread on the beta forums about the context menu. Basically, Flexdoesn't give us anything over and above the MX/Flash Player 7 way ofcreating context menus. Also, there is a restriction in Flash Player 7 that means a movie clipnested withing another movie clip cannot have a context menu attached toit - since all Flex containers and components end up in the Flash playeras movie clips this effectively means that you can only add contextmenus to the top level application or to components that sit within thattop level application. I'm hoping that a future Flash Player willaddress this. However, saying that, I do know of a book coming out soon that containsand an example of a custom component that lets you easily add contextmenus to your Flex applicationsAli-- Alistair McLeodDevelopment Directoriteration::twoJoint-Author of "Developing Rich Clients with Macromedia Flex"Available June 2004 from Macromedia PressOn Thu, 2004-05-06 at 15:36, Steve Pruitt wrote:> I recall the Beta documentation containing instructions on customizing> the context menu, the right-mouse-button menu. RE: [flexcoders] When to use executeBindings() ?
I find myself using executeBindings() more and more. The pattern is usually when I use an AS object, that I developed, as the underlying model of a component and the binding is a method call on this object. Not really sure how to "reorganize" my objects as I am not doing anything convoluted. Is there a better pattern? I also found that executeChildBindings() doesn't seem to do anything, but it may be justmy use of it. What is the difference between the two methods? -S You shouldn't need to call executeBindings() except in extremecircumstances.During compilation, Flex creates watchers for each object (includingparameters to function calls) in each binding _expression_. If you are makingchanges internal to Arrays of objects in the Repeater's dataProvider and thewatchers aren't catching changes, you can probably reorganize objects inyour binding expressions rather than call executeBindings() manually. Please file a bug and we'll check out the problem. It sounds like we justneed to improve the Repeater/Binding documentation a little.
