RE: [flexcoders] Web services or FDS: which are you using?

2006-08-16 Thread Steve Pruitt

I hate to fly in from nowhere...  But I have an
in-production Flex app fielded to several big customers.  We are completely
dependent on web services for a variety of arch reasons.  I always
appreciate any and all focus by Adobe to web services.

[flexcoders] crossdomain.xml on Weblogic

2006-07-13 Thread Steve Pruitt
All,

Does anyone know specifically where to place the crossdomain.xml file
for Weblogic. Drilling down through the Weblogic directories, I found a
folder containing the installed application folders. The path for the
folder is:

C:\bea\weblogic91\samples\domains\wl_server\servers\examplesServer\tmp\_
WL_user

I tried putting the crossdomain.xml file here with no luck.

[flexcoders] Loader api

2006-05-23 Thread Steve Pruitt

I cannot get the Loader to work when using
its api directly.  But, the tag equivalent
works.

My code looks like api usage looks
like...

_loader = new Loader();_loader.visible
= false;_loader.load("fileIO.swf");_loader.addEventListener("complete",
mx.utils.Delegate.create(this, libLoaded));

The libLoaded handler is never called and
0 bytes are loaded.

The tag that
works...

  id="myLoader" visible="false"  autoLoad="true"
 source="fileIO.swf"
 complete="libLoaded(event)" />

The libLoaded handler is
called and some count of bytes are
loaded.

It is the same absolute
url, so I can't see why one works and one does
not.

RE: [flexcoders] web services suddenly stopped working!!

I
have been using mxmlc called by an ant script for about a year.  I
don't specify a context root only the Flex config file and location of the
Application mxml.  I have made no changes to this process.  Everything
worked fine on Wednesday.  Yesterday, I developed a few new GUI
components, recompiled, tried to run only to run into the problem below.

Hmm, {context.root} should have been replaced at compile
time by the context root.

Are you using mxmlc to compile this on the command line or
are you browsing to the .mxml file? If you are using the command line, are you
specifying a context root?

I have a very
inexplicable problem and I have exhausted everything I know to check, twiddle,

application has a set of webservices that have been working for months.  I
have not changed anything related to the deployment environment.  I have
not changed the WSDLs.  I have not changed the web services that are
called.  When my application starts up it makes a web service call for a
list of items.  This particular web service call has been operational for
nearly a year.  The only major change I have made is switching over to Flex
1.5, but I did this last week and all of my web services have working up until
now.  So I do not see how 1.5 is a factor.

Like I stated, when
my application launches an initial window comes up and a web service call is
invoked.  It looks like the call is never issued by Flex.  I use a tcp
monitor and the request never shows.  What I do get is 5 alerts.  All
five are completely blank and the title is simply Error.  If I click around

closes.  But, I have no idea what, if any, message is supposed to be

I tried using an alert and still no go.  the only
other thing to add is the TextInput tag is in a Form inside a TitleWindow.
Why this would matter I don't know, but there doesn't seem to be any other

[flexcoders] custom formatter

2005-03-30 Thread Steve Pruitt

The format method on
a custom formatter is not being called.  I have trace stmts in the format
method and they never print and the intended formatting doesn't
happen.
The class looks
like:

   class
myformatters.VersionStatusFormatter extends Formatter

{
  :
  :
  public function format(value : String) :
String
  {
    :
    :
    return
someString;
  }

}

Its defined
in a mxml like this:

And then I use it
like this:

private function
getVersionStatus() : String{
trace("VersionedAdmin - getVersionStatus");   return
statusFormatter.format(someString);  //someString is defined
globally}

I tried inlining the
format method call in the text= attribute, but it didn't work there
either.  Everything compiles ok.  And statusFormatter appears to be
set to
something, ala
toString() reveals statusFormatter[object Object].

language support

2005-03-04 Thread Steve Pruitt

I am trying to get different language support
working in my application.  My current target is French.  The French
text is fetched from a database at runtime.  It can be displayed in a tree
node label, in a text component, as a Window title, in a list, etc.  In
other words, many places.  Running the application, I get problems like the
character "é" replaced by "é".

My only application change at this point is
including the Basic Latin language-range tag in the flex config file. But
this did not work.  There is obviously something(s) else I must do.
Can anyone shed some light?

All,

where a server is not up and when trying to launch my Flex application the

RE: [flexcoders] stack trace

2005-02-14 Thread Steve Pruitt

That looks very helpful.
Thanks.

-S

From Paul Reilly who made many improvements to the Debug
Player

I believe the Flex debug
player that shipped with Flex 1.5, prints a stack trace for each warning.
There is no way to programmatically dump a stack, though.  To get line
numbers and file names, all you have to do is load as SWD with the SWF (note
from Matt, this means make the request ?debug=true).  I added a nicelittle
gem to mm.cfg to automatically suppress the debugger dialog, so that you can
request the SWF with a SWD without having to opt out of the debugger each
time.  Here is the necessary mm.cfg settings:

TraceOutputFileEnable=1

ErrorReportingEnable=1

SuppressDebuggerDialog=1

There is also a setting for
turning on dumping a stack for each
trace()
statement:

TraceLocationEnable=1

Using this with a trace()
statement is pretty much a programmatic stack dump, but if there are lots of
other trace() statements, this gets pretty chatty.

HTH,
Matt

RE: [flexcoders] extraneous xml text node

2004-05-07 Thread Steve Pruitt

I am confused as well, my problem appears a bit more
insidious.  I'll try to summarize more succinctly.  In my WS handler I
trace-out the props of the result argument and I
get...

++ result props++ prop: type    value:
onResult++ prop: result value: spruitttoday++
prop: operation    value: [object Object]++ prop:
call    value: PendingCall Object.  This is not the actual
result to a call.  To get the result of a call, please use the result
handler.

Looks good.  The value of the result.result property has
the xml returned by my WS.  To parse, I do this.

var model = new XML();model.ignoreWhite =
true;model.parseXML(result);

var content : XMLNode =
model.firstChild;

Only content should be my root node CheckedOut; but
its not.  Its a Text node that has no text value.  There is
nothing else.  I loop through the child nodes of model and all I get is one
node whose type is 3.

If I parse like this it works fine.

model.parseXML(result.result);

I have many WS handlers where I
parse with model.parseXML(result); and these work fine.  Why has this
worked previously, but stopped working for this one WS
call handler?  Are those other handlers time bombs that could blow
up?  Do I need to go back and change them to model.parseXML(result.result);?

-S

I'm confused.  If
you take the result of the web service and use this:
var doc =
model.firstChild;
var
checkOutByNode = doc.firstChild;
var
checkOutByText = checkOutByNode.firstChild.nodeValue;

does it work or
not?  I'm pretty sure when we get in XML we ignore the whitespace, but
perhaps we don't.  If you think the whitespace was not ignored I guesswhat
you could do is create another XML, ignoreWhitespace, and then parse the first
XML.toString().

If this fixes things we
can look into why the WebService didn't' ignore whitespace (you should filea
bug).

SOAP payload in a CDATA tag.  I'm not sure if you can.  My xml
snippet below is the xml returned over the wire.  I see nothing wrong
with it.

I dumped out
result.value and it looks like:

spruitt4/7/104

looks ok to
me.

I have other
WS calls that don't need this.  Why is the parser being
unpredictable?

XML is a pain inthe

function go()

{

var model = new XML();

model.ignoreWhite = true;

 model.parseXML(xmlStr);

var doc = model.firstChild;

var checkOutByNode = doc.firstChild;

var checkOutByText = checkOutByNode.firstChild.nodeValue;

out.text = checkOutByText;

I checked the parse
status code on model after the parse and it was 0.  But, the document only
has a single Text node.

An old problem has cropped
up.

When I parse:

spruitt
4/6/104

with:

var model = new
XML();model.parseXML(result);

var myNode: XMLNode =
model.firstChild;

myNode is an extraneous Text
node.  nodeType is 3.

myNode.nodeVaue prints out as
[object Object]

I tried
using:

model.ignoreWhite =
true;

without
success.

I don't want to manually search and
strip these out.  Is there something I am missing?

RE: [flexcoders] Context menu

2004-05-06 Thread Steve Pruitt

I have heard rumors about this book.  Know anything
about it?   :>) Hi
Steve,I can't remember seeing anything in the Beta docs, but i did start
athread on the beta forums about the context menu. Basically,
Flexdoesn't give us anything over and above the MX/Flash Player 7 way
ofcreating context menus.Also, there is a restriction in Flash
Player 7 that means a movie clipnested withing another movie clip cannot
have a context menu attached toit - since all Flex containers and components
end up in the Flash playeras movie clips this effectively means that you can
only add contextmenus to the top level application or to components that sit
within thattop level application. I'm hoping that a future Flash Player
willaddress this.However, saying that, I do know of a book coming
out soon that containsand an example of a custom component that lets you
easily add contextmenus to your Flex applicationsAli--

Context menu

2004-05-06 Thread Steve Pruitt

I recall the Beta
documentation containing instructions on customizing the context menu, the
right-mouse-button menu.  I can't find anything in the 1.0 documentation
except in the Printing chapter.  Has this been removed?

I need

Tree view.  Any suggestions?

RE: [flexcoders] When to use executeBindings() ?

2004-05-06 Thread Steve Pruitt

I find myself using executeBindings() more and
more.  The pattern is usually when I use an AS object, that I developed, as
the underlying model of a component and the binding is a method call on this
object.  Not really sure how to "reorganize" my objects as I am not doing
anything convoluted.  Is there a better pattern?

I also found
that executeChildBindings() doesn't seem to do anything, but it may be justmy
use of it.   What is the difference between the two
methods?

-S
You
shouldn't need to call executeBindings() except in
extremecircumstances.During compilation, Flex creates watchers for
each object (includingparameters to function calls) in each binding
_expression_.  If you are makingchanges internal to Arrays of objects in
the Repeater's dataProvider and thewatchers aren't catching changes, you can
probably reorganize objects inyour binding expressions rather than call
executeBindings() manually.Please file a bug and we'll check out the
problem.  It sounds like we justneed to improve the Repeater/Binding
documentation a little.  We prefer when things work automagically
to having folks stumble aroundblindly.

needs to be manually told to "executeBindings()" and when it will happen
auto-magically?  I haven't found the pattern yet, I'm stumbling around
blindly by calling it manually if it doesn't seem to work.  I'd love
to know more definitively exactly when it should be needed, as I can't

tree node filtering

2004-04-28 Thread Steve Pruitt

Does anyone know of
a way to prevent a Tree from displaying items.  I have a situation where it
appears the following is
happening:

__
___
___
|
|  data obj
|
|   some var
|
|
| TreeNode
|   -->  | myobject1   |
-> | myobject2  |
|
|
|  |
|
|
--

---

myobject2shows up
as a node in the tree.  Not sure why this happens.

I add myobject1
with: parentTreeNode.addTreeNode(myobject1);
Shouldn'tI have to
do the same with myobject2 in order for it to be a node?
