[flexcoders] Announcing: BlogRadio, a Flex 4 App - Get the Adobe Pack Now

2010-03-16 Thread bruce1976
Flexcoders,

I'd like to introduce to you my Flex 4 app that I've been working on for about
a year now: BlogRadio.

BlogRadio is simple: we allow anyone to *listen* to their favorite blogs. We
have a Text-to-Speech engine that converts the text of RSS feeds to a natural
voice. If the RSS feed contains any images, then we’ll convert the images to
video and stream the combined media to the user wherever they are.

We created this app using Flash Builder 4 beta, and Flash Catalyst.

We've worked out a deal with Adobe, so that anyone who downloads the AIR
application by 3/31 will automatically subscribed to the "Adobe Pack" of blogs
(James Ward, Ryan Stewart, and a whole bunch of others).

For kicks and giggles, I also made the app automatically read the latest
BlogRadio tweet from twitter (which turns out to be a handy way to broadcast a
quick message to everyone).

Feel free to download the app from our website, and of course submit your
feedback on new features.

Thanks,

Bruce Hopkins
BlogRadio

[flexcoders] Is it possible for a TitleWindow to open another TitleWindow?

2007-05-02 Thread bruce1976
Hi,

I haven't taken the time to try this out yet, but I wanted to know if
a TitleWindow could open another TitleWindow.

If anyone knows the answer, please let me know.

Thanks,

Bruce

[flexcoders] Is there any chance that Flex 3 will support HTTP resonse headers?

2007-04-24 Thread bruce1976
Flex team,

I've been working with Flex for a while, and I remember reading
somewhere that Flex 3 will NOT require users to upgrade to a newer
version of the Flash player.

So, is Flex 3 going to support HTTP Response headers? It's a little
awkward to be able to set headers when communicating with my backend
system, but I can't read the headers that it sends back.

Regards,

Bruce

[flexcoders] Re: Data binding: How to detect data change has happened?

2007-03-12 Thread bruce1976
I'd agree with everything that you said, except for the last portion:

> There is no general property watching in AS, so you have to define
> contracts and use events and whatnot.

Take a look at the ObjectProxy class, refenced below:

http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/201/langref/mx/utils/ObjectProxy.html

By wrapping the object that you're interested in into an ObjectProxy,
you can get notified by any changes to the new object (just use your
new object in place of your old object).

Regards,

Bruce

[flexcoders] Re: Flex Data Services Question, Java backend (HTTPAdapter?)

2007-03-10 Thread bruce1976
Thanks,

I'll do look it up.

Ideally, I would like to do one of the following:

1) Use Flex Messaging Service, and have my Java backend act as a
producer (but I don't want to setup a JMS topic).

or

2) Use a "HTTPAdapter" (for lack of a better term) that will allow
remote producer of data to send a HTTP POST that will be delivered to
all the clients.

Thanks,

Bruce

[flexcoders] Flex Data Services Question, Java backend

2007-03-09 Thread bruce1976
Hi,

I want my Flex clients to be notified when new data is available. The
data is read-only, so the Flex clients won't be updating it, they just
need to display it. When the data is ready to be viewed, I have a Java
backend that can send an HTTP post to any endpoint, but I'm having
trouble determining which FDS component I should use.

Of course, the Flex client can't receive the POST, and I don't mind
putting a mini-HTTP server on the same tier as the FDS, but I'm not
sure how to notify the clients.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Bruce

[flexcoders] Apollo External API

2007-03-07 Thread bruce1976
Hi,

Currently, Flex has an External API that allows a Flex app to call
javascript or an ActiveX control within the browser. Will Apollo be
bundled with a JVM and use an External API to call Java methods?

Thanks,

Bruce
