Both suggestions worked -- I implemented the javascript / ExternalInterface method first, then saw the other reply and that worked out, too. I kept the systemManager.screen version since it doesn't require Javascript, and the Javascript code I was using to detect the size of the current browser window isn't exactly bullet- proof.
