RE: [flexcoders] Free Flex???

2006-02-01 Thread Steven Webster
The current version of Cairngorm 0.99 is written in ActionScript 2.0.

We have an alpha version of Cairngorm 2.0 (the next release, we'll align with
the Flex
Numbering) that is very similar to Cairngorm 0.99 in functionality, but
reimplemented in ActionScript 3.0. Our focus has been on allowing you to
migrate your apps from Flex 1.5 + Cairngorm 0.99 to Flex 2.0 and Cairngorm 2.0
with little or no migration effort assigned to Cairngorm.

The only real change in API will be in your usage of the ModelLocator; because
with Flex 2 you can't bind to statics, we've had to change our implementation
of ModelLocator slightly.

However, don't expect swathes of new Cairngorm functionality; it's a
microarchitecture, and so micro is important to us. We're not intent on
loading it with feature after feature, we're intent on ensuring it's a stable
skeleton upon which you can flesh out your applications.

Best,

Steven

There is an article on news.com that says the following.

Adobe is introducing a free, basic software developers kit which
includes the Flex Framework, compiler and documentation. The Flex
Builder development tool costs $1,000 per developer.

The link is here.

http://news.com.com/Adobe+to+release+Flex+beta/2100-1012_3-6033462.html?

Is this true? If so what will the difference be between the $1000 flex
and the free version.

RE: [flexcoders] Free Flex???

2006-01-31 Thread João Fernandes
This is amazing !

Free Limited FES will really mark a new step of application deployment over the
web for those with lower budgets.

This is not a problem for me but I know many that Flex pricing was a huge
problem and maybe this free version can be enough for them.

Adobe,

Thank You !

RE: [flexcoders] Free Flex???

2006-01-31 Thread Steven Webster

Hey guys,

The news on "free Flex" is officially corroborated - there
are a bunch of blog-postings from Adobe employees that will give you the back
story:

  Christian Cantrell - http://weblogs.macromedia.com/cantrell/archives/2006/01/flex_beta_2_and.cfm

  Danny Dura - http://www.danieldura.com/archive/its-true---a-free-flex-sdk

  Mark Anders - http://www.andersblog.com/archives/2006/01/free_flex_frame.html
In addition, we've announced that the public beta of Flex 2
will ship Wednesday (today where I come from, tomorrow where many of you come
from) and that (big big drum roll) it's going to include the new Flex Enterprise
Services (FES).

Don't make plans for the weekend.

Enjoy ;)

Steven
PS. We'll confirm the Cairngorm 2.0 alpha build
against the snapshot build that you guys get, and get something to you
ASAP.

To me, Flex 2 without Cairngorm 2 doesn't make much sense ;)

Never said that,

But I'm quite sure that there are a lot of changes between 0.99 and 2.0.

You can't bind to statics, so ModelLocator is f00ked, but I think that's
already fixed. Because of the changes in AS3, they had to modify some
stuff... all for the better.
