Re: [Flexradio] For your information the schematic of the 100W PA

2007-05-11 Thread k5nwa
Looks like all I need to pass to the amplifier is a Tx/Rx signal and
a three bit code for the band in use so the right low-pass filter can
be selected.

I've been looking at some circuits and they have been very similar,
except they needed about 5 to 10 watts drive. I thought that a pair
of IRF510's in push pull on the input aught lower the drive
requirement with a little to spare, and here we are, exactly that is
what in Flex amplifier.

Maybe I need to build it myself.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex linear stand alone use.

2007-05-11 Thread petervn
It will give a lot of problems to make it usable
stand alone. so I wouls say NO.
- controling the band filters and TR reala is done with a serial signal.
- readout of power an reflected power
- easy to overdrive the PA. (no level control inside the PA)
It is not practical.

Can the Flex Linear for the SDR-1000 be used stand alone? Are there
other connections other than Power, RF in/out that will cause it not
to work unless connected to a SDR-1000?

The reason being is that I need a linear for my SDR-1000 but I would
like to use it with other small low power transceivers but I would
like to keep it to one linear if possible. I would have available a
transmit/receive signal but that is about it.

The picture on the accesories page shows just one set.

Some times I get it, but other times it goes bonkers.

And I can NEVER transmit.

I did get PSK and Rtty working once, but then I lost it.

I am using the Edirol Sound card and intalled VAC 3.** something.

Would you guys take screen shots of your settings and email them to me?

Re: [Flexradio] SDR-101

2007-05-11 Thread petervn
you can take your bassy audio and convert it to data and manipulate
the highs and lows and make the audio perfect. You can do this on receive
also. All this is done in software. You don't have to add any external
hardware to get the most pleasing audio out of this radio.

I considered going into how some signals are developed within the software, but
for a beginning article I think it might be better to treat the software part
of this more like a black box. You get some audio represented inside the
computer and the software massages that data and spits out something different,
like with the filter slicing up a wider bandwidth which is a frequency process,
or the equalizer enhancing the amplitudes of certain frequencies as in the mic
audio example. Of course there are many more complexities going on inside the
black box. There is AGC, telling the radio what freq within the 200khz
bandwidth to listen to, mode, display, and many more. This in some way is what
sets FLEX apart from the rest and why it is so powerful. With the more
traditional DSP based radios you are heavily constrained by the old notions of
needing a physical representation of a button to do something, or the need of a
"knob" to do tuning. By sticking to these old
representations you are stuck with a very limited set of possibilities.

For example many radio's now have a "second receiver". In the older iteration
of the software Flex had one receiver. By using the software flex added
another receiver within the pass-band of the radio called a watch receiver.
The audio from the second RX is pannable across the stereo spectrum so you can
not only point and click on a DX you can also tune around the pileup listening
for a spot that might be fortuitous. One day you have one receiver, the next
day you have 2 because someone thought it and wrote it in software. OH WOW you
say? The Flex could have as many as 16 receivers if there was some way for the
human mind to grasp the 16 dimensions of information that would imply. Maybe
someday artificial intelligence or neural networks may provide just such a
means of presenting such data that the mind may comprehend. Try doing that
with your PRO-3.

One advantage of the flex architecture is that fact that you have complete
control over the processor as well as the process. The Orion has what it has
for a processor inside. Beside being constrained by a certain number of
buttons, it has a certain amount of horsepower and a certain amount of memory
and that's all it will ever have. The Flex on the other hand is basically
infinitely expandable. It started out being developed on an AMD K-5 processor
and now has moved to core 2 duo and nothing precludes it from going quad as
soon as that is common. It is presently 32 bit and there is nothing that
precludes it from going 64 bit. One other thing is the open source nature of
the software. This takes control out of the factory and gives it in a
collaborative way to the user. We all benefit from the collaboration.

So that's it for today's installment.

Any comments?

Re: [Flexradio] VAC and DXLabs WinWarbler

2007-05-11 Thread n3wt
I agree with Neal.

Setting the VAC as the defult audio player for input and output in Windows
Sounds settings is what worked for me also for WinWarbler. Be sure to set the
appropriate cable numbers as per your VAC setup. This works for other
programs that do not allow selection of the audio devices.

Now, back to making my Atlas board.Janus/Ozy will be very interesting and
sitting here ready to go.

I got the VAC program up and running.
Followed the setup guide.
(VAC 3.12)

I see there is a VAC version 4.04 but stuck to the one in the setup guide.

Everything is set up as the guide but the final page which is for a
different digital program than I have used with my ft1000mp.

I use WinWarbler which just didn't want to accept the VAC 1 and Vac 2 lines.

I'm getting there, can't make Dayton this yearHave a safe and rewarding
