The front panel microphone input has 20 dB of gain and the balanced input
has unity gain. The frequency response of the two inputs are virtually
identical.

While monitoring my transmit audio in my Flex 5000A I have noticed a bit of
difference in sound (fidelity?) when using the BAL vs. the front panel
Microphone input. Does the BAL input bypass any microphone preamplifier
circuitry that may be used by the front panel Mic input?

[Flexradio] duty cycle heat

2008-05-30 Thread FireBrick
I read with interest the emails about the duty cycle and heat test.

As a digital contester, my question is...

"Is it better to pop those side panels off"

With DDTU giving a realtime temp reading, I interested in:
"do the side panels control air flow and IMPROVE temp"
or
"is the air flow better withOUT the side pannels.

Re: [Flexradio] The QST Review

2008-05-30 Thread Gerald Youngblood
Hello Flexers,

Overall, we at FlexRadio felt it was a fair and balanced review. Note that
most of the software feature wishes in the article were already available to
SVN users at the time the article was written. These will be in the new
official release as soon as RX2 changes are frozen.

Let me give a great example of how a true Software Defined Radio is
different from legacy radios. The QST article commented on how it would be
helpful to have buffer settings by mode. Guess what? In the RX2 SVN
branch, we have already implemented RX/TX buffer settings by mode for Phone,
CW, and Digital. This will merge with the main branch too.

Yes, you can use the FLEX-5000 at 100W for RTTY contests. We did aditional
thermal testing after the manual was published that allows for full duty
cycle operation at 100W. Our testing was done with 100W key down for one
hour with thermisters attached to the final transistors. The temperature
stabalized after about 20 minutes within a hot but safe range on the finals.

The QST article is in error about the fan. It always runs and is virtually
silent.

The FLEX-5000 and the SDR-1000 will continue to "just keep getting better."

Gerald

Flex Gurus,

The review, among many other things, states " the Flex-5000A is rated at
100W continuous duty on all modes. This is a recent change that reflects
the results of additional testing."

Is this correct? Last I knew the manual stated 40 watts max continuous.
Also, the review sounded as if the fan does not run continuously, only as
needed. My fan runs at one speed continuously, even on receive only. Was
this changed in later units?
What is the highest PA temperature we should allow? I thought 50c was the
maximum we should allow the PA to rise to. AFSK ops , and even PSKers ,
would like to know. I also do 1 watt WSPR mode (K1JT) with amazing
results, so temp not an issue there.

Overall, I thought the review was fair and balanced. Nothing made me jump
up and yell "wrong" .The CW is already much improved with the latest
SVN's and good promise to improve yet more. It is a fun tweaking adventure.

I felt the review gave a more favorable picture of the Flex5000A than I
would have expected. I say this as a League life member of some 40 years
and one who has been upset with the organization over it's failure to
recognize the importance of the technical side of our hobby. The sudden
recent mention that our interests do or at least should have a technical
basis doesn't make me any less suspicious of many actions in Newington. My
personal opinion is that if we Flexers expect a more glowing report then
Gerald will have to buy full page advertising on the Inside Front Cover, and
both sides of the Back Cover as well as contributing heavily to some aspect
of the various building funds.

Re: [Flexradio] The QST Review

2008-05-30 Thread Robert Dennison
Hi Lee,

Well, I tend to agree with you. ARRL doesn't dare offend it's current
advertising base. Look what happened when they took on the antenna
advertisers.

That said, I thought they were pretty generous in some areas: mainly CW
and AGC and NR. IMO, Flex has a long ways to go in these areas and the
League could have been much harsher!

On the other hand, they certainly could have mentioned how much easier
the Panadapter makes it to use a whole band segment or what a pleasure it
is to use Flex with the digital modes.

very best regards
Rob

Sound like you may want to review your buffer settings on the FLEX-5000
control panel and on the PowerSDR Setup Form -> Audio Tab. Try using 2048

[Flexradio] Source code to fix PowerSDR Placement

2008-05-30 Thread dunluce
I had changed the code for my own use but if it's of use to anybody else
here it is

First change the case statements in SetState to the following;

case "console_top":

  this.Top = Int32.Parse(val);

  FormOnScreen(this);

  break;

case "console_left":

  this.Left = Int32.Parse(val);

  FormOnScreen(this);

  break;

case "setup_top":

  SetupForm.Top = Int32.Parse(val);

  FormOnScreen(SetupForm);

  break;

case "setup_left":

  SetupForm.Left = Int32.Parse(val);

  FormOnScreen(SetupForm);

  break;

case "mem_top":

  MemForm.Top = Int32.Parse(val);

  FormOnScreen(MemForm);

  break;

case "mem_left":

  MemForm.Left = Int32.Parse(val);

  FormOnScreen(MemForm);

  break;

then add the following new Method to the Console class;

void FormOnScreen(Form f)

{

  // Get the bounding rectangle of the windows logical desktop

  // the one problem with this routine is if one screen is much larger

  // than another but how many people place there forms across screens!

  Screen[] screens = Screen.AllScreens;

  int Left, Top, Right, Bottom;

  Left = Top = Right = Bottom = 0;

  for (int i = 0; i <= screens.GetUpperBound(0); i++)

  {

if (screens[i].Bounds.Left < Left)

  Left = screens[i].Bounds.Left;

if (screens[i].Bounds.Right > Right)

  Right = screens[i].Bounds.Right;

if (screens[i].Bounds.Top < Top)

  Top = screens[i].Bounds.Top;

if (screens[i].Bounds.Bottom > Bottom)

  Bottom = screens[i].Bounds.Bottom;

  }

  // if the forms left side is left of the logical desktops left then

  // set it to the left side of the logical desktop

  if (f.Left < Left)

f.Left = Left;

  // if the forms right side goes beyond the right side of the logical

  // desktop then position the form so the right side of the form

  // coincides with the right side of the logical desktop.

  else if ((f.Left + f.Width) > Right)

f.Left = Right - (f.Width);

  // if the forms top is above the logical desktops top then

  // set it to the top of the logical desktop

  if (f.Top < Top)

f.Top = Top;

  // if the forms bottom goes beyond the bottom of the logical

  // desktop then position the form so the bottom of the form

  // coincides with the bottom of the logical desktop.

  else if ((f.Top + f.Height) > Bottom)

f.Top = Bottom - (f.Height);

  // On initial startup it is the Location property that sets

  // the position of the form

  f.StartPosition = FormStartPosition.Manual;

  Point pt = new Point(f.Left, f.Top);

  f.Location = pt;

}
