Yes, it is doable, but as a permanent operating solution, simpler is better by
minimizing the "layers" you have to put in and manage as a consequence of doing
so. The nice thing about SDRs is there are many ways to skin the cat. :-)

Tim,

To avoid having to use external speakers at Hamfest demos, I normally connect
the "PWR SPKR OUT" on the Flex to the "Line In" on the laptop's built-in
soundcard.

However, another almost elegant solution is to use the Audio Repeater
application that comes with VAC to pipe the audio from the VAC line carrying
the audio output from the Flex to the PC's soundcard. It is only "almost"
elegant because it introduces a significant amount of delay opposed to the
direct wire approach.

The Griffin PowerMate makes a convenient volume control for the PC soundcard.

Re: [Flexradio] Audio out though computer speakers

2010-03-24 Thread Tim Ellison
That would require the interaction of a sound card in the PC which is a
separate hardware device with PowerSDR. PowerSDR would have to control the
gain of the sound card directly as you should have a fixed gain source
(PowerSDR) and vary the volume of the sound card's AF PA which is the last PA
in the audio chain for best S/N. It is a bit of a complicated scenario to deal
with by having to support a multitude of sound cards.

You can actually do this with the VAC configuration in PowerSDR (not actually
using VAC) if you like, but you have to manually match and control the output
gain from the external soundcard to the speakers.

If the Flex 5000 is using the computer to do all of its DSP work, why then is
the audio fed back into the Flex box where I have to hook up powered

stable and released software that is officially supported by FlexRadio. There
are detailed instrctions on how to install/upgrade these components on located

PowerSDR 2.0 is not released software - yet. It is alpha software that is
under development and is not recommended for new users or those who desire a
stable, reliable operating environment. Alpha software is for testing new and
potentially buggy code only and there are a lot of caveats and precautions one
must understand and accept before using it. One of those is that there is no
official support for if from FlexRadio other than what the developers provide
when testing specific features. Most of the support is user provided on the

The CD that came with the radio only has v1.18.5 on it.

Is v1.18.5 the latest "mainstream" release? Is 2.x is still under

[Flexradio] Low Output

2010-03-24 Thread Jim Fuller - N7VR
Hi All,

I have the following:
Flex-3000
FlexDriver: 3.5.0.7171
Firmware: 1.2.5.6
PowerSDR: 1.18.5
Operating System: Win 7 64 Bit.

Last night the FlexDriver dropped. I shut down PowerSDR. I then powered off
the Flex-3000. When returning to air. The FWD PWR indicated about 10 to 15
Watts on SSB With the Drive setting at 100. I switched to the dummy load and
had the same problem. I reset the database and the same result. Frequency is
7.268.5KHz. Mic Gain Verified at 15 CODR at 5. Mic is a Yaesu MH-31. Tested
all Bands Same Results.

I decided to use tune to see the results, as previously I have been able to
tune into the dummy load at 100 watts. Max power indicated out was 19 Watts.
Cross checked with a external Watt Meter verifies output readings.

As I still had PowerSDR 1.18.3 on the computer, I tried it with the same
results. Database reset did not make any difference.

I think there may be an issue.

We should complete our testing of the redesigned VU module by the end of
this week. At that point we will release beta to production and should have
a better idea of the schedule. We will plan to communicate to everyone as
soon as we have a schedule that we feel is reasonably accurate. We are
finding that materials availability has become extremely unpredictable as
the economy is picking up. This unfortunately adds uncertainty to our plans
but we are working those issues as they arise.

Re: [Flexradio] Getting started with transverters

2010-03-24 Thread David McKenzie
Matt,

I'm using transverters with my 3000 through Down East Microwave's AOS-28
interface box, which attenuates up to 25 watts down 100mW (default, factory
adjustable). It takes care of all the RF switching so that the receive is
not attenuated (eliminates the need for external relays). All in all a very
nice box for the relatively low price.

The other option is to buy transverters that have the RF switching and
attenuators built in, like the Elecraft ones Tim linked. Personally if you
are going to buy new I'd wait for the new line of DEMI transverters.

Re: [Flexradio] Getting started with transverters

2010-03-24 Thread Tim Ellison
I am not expert by any means in this area, but I can start you off with some
info.

A transverter usually a very low level RF input on one frequency and outputs RF
on a higher frequency and usually of a higher wattage.

For the FLEX-3000, the output frequencies (called the IF) will probably be 10
and 6m and the resulting RF output is 144, 222, 433 MHz or higher.

One thing you have to be careful of is the RF drive from the FLEX-3000.
Transverters can require milliwatts to several watts of RF drive max. The
FLEX-3000 does not have a dedicated transverter interface that limits the RF
output to very low levels like the FLEX-5000, so you may need an attenuator on
the RF output of the F3K to limit the drive.

Just about any transverter can be made to work with the FLEX-3000

Popular ones are from Elecraft

DownEast Microwave

SSB Electronics
